Huge loss. He lived on the edge in his prime, but he was always funny and also a fine actor on the big screen.

There's no shortage of great stand-ups, but this is my favorite - at Reagan's 2nd inaugural

I'll be honest, I was never much of a fan of his standup. Offstage, though, he was apparently one of the sweetest and best-liked guys in the business. He was best friends with Bob Newhart, whose persona couldn't have been more completely different.

RIP, Mr. Warmth. He had an amazing life and career, active and working right until the end. I don't think he ever changed his act and it never stopped being funny, which is super rare. I'm sad. I think he was the last of the ancillary Rat Pack members around as well.

It's worth spending some time going down a youtube rabbit hole of Rickles appearances on Johnny Carson.

I think it was the same set as Sanford and Son. Just with all the junk cleared out.

Missed it. Never even heard of it. I didn't watch any American TV between 1968 and 1994.

Here's a great clip from the Tonight Show when Carson breaks onto the set of CPO Sharky while Rickles is taping.

So you missed the entire run of Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and Mork & Mindy? Poor guy...

Don Rickles at Ronald Reagan's second inauguration. The story is that they were going to have Rickles but were wimping out at the last minute because they were worried about him. Frank Sinatra was their signature act, though, and Sinatra threatened to pull out of they didn't allow Rickles to perform.
