Man, I wanted him dealt in the worst way, and here he is, the reason I spent a half an hour on a school night celebrating with my son. Thank you, Brett, and thank you, Brian.

After fouling off the 10th or 11th pitch, camera caught him peeking at the Yankee dugout and smiling. Legendary.

Noticed that too... One of the greatest at-bats I can remember.

Its amazing how bad that inning looks if the Yankees don't score at least one run that inning.

Brett battling was great [although I never thought it would end well given how many balls he swung at].

I think by the time his at bat was done Chapman had been sitting about 30 minutes.

Bretts at bat crushed the Inidians and their fans and total re-energized Chapman IMO.

I can honestly say he has been one of my fav players since coming up. Tonight just enforced that.

I wanted him traded after they signed Ellsbury, since they seemed like redundant players at the time. I'm very happy to be wrong.

I can't remember him ever playing better than he is right now.

he's been grinding out at-bats all postseason, catalyzing run-scoring, getting key sac flies, etc

Yes; I have been advocating a trade for at least two years. But Gardner has just kept getting better. I said he could not be part of the rebuild. But it came sooner and he is a key part of this team. What an at-bat in the ninth last night!

It is tough to predict career arcs, I think. Contrast Gardner's and Ellsbury's.

Gutty, gritty Brett won an award I never heard of before:

    Congrats!

I can't think of a more deserving player.

This is precisely why he Yankees shouldn't consider trading Brett. His intangibles are off the charts.

Thank the masses this thing wasn't around in the 80s. It would have been named after Pete Rose and passed back and forth between Dykstra and Backman.

No disrespect to Brett, but after the inaugural one, just seems insulting not to have retired it. No can touch Lord Scrapford Von Gritt, and his ability to hustle and dirty his jersey should not be tarnished by these pretenders to the throne.

That was my thought, too. Either retire it or continue to give it to him every year. He may not be playing in MLB anymore, but his heart and hustle haven’t diminished a bit.

@ these comments. I'm maybe the biggest Gardner fan on this forum but everything above is robustly true

Gardner should've won some more Gold Gloves when he was younger; then he wouldnt have to be given this sham award to make up for it

9 of the last 11 NL ROYs and 11 of the last 14 AL ROYs were white. ROY = White Guy Award?

5 of the last 6 NL MVPs and 8 of the last 11 AL MVPs were huge. Trending toward White Guy Award as well?

All of the last 19 NL CYA winners and 5 of the last 7 AL CYA winners were white. Oh, well . . .

You’ve got it backwards. The winners didn’t define it as a White Guy Award; Snatch Catch looked them up as confirmation of what the name suggested.
