it's a basic mapping of the scouting system, which is about the 'status' or rarity of a player, onto the distribution of value among all players. so an 'all star' on the scouting chart happens to be a 4 win guy, which is like top 10-7%. average is 2 wins etc

it keeps the distribution shape of the scouting scale.

Do you think Harper and Machado will be around the same cost?

eh, depends on how well they do. my guess would be machado 300/9, harper 420/10.

opt outs and all that matter a great deal as well.

i just checked machado's stats. he'll have a good power year

I guess a lot can happen in two seasons. Why so much less for Machado? Injuries?

I don't think it will be as large of a gap between the two. I think Manny get 10/340. Harper at 10/420 sounds legit. Harper is a brand, while Manny is just one of the best players. Harper might be the face of baseball, along with Trout. I mean no way Jeter gets paid as he does if he's not the face of baseball in the late 90s and 2000s.

Isn't it fair to say that a 3B is worth more than a RF just based on position? Assuming similar production, of course.

this is just what i think they'll get. machado has produced more value with his glove so far in his career than with the bat, and if these are the numbers you could really argue that taking manny is the better way to go, especially if he keeps up the defense at 3b.

i assume harper would have two mega years before his deal. by that point harper would be pretty historic in his offense. machado is really good, but still short 100 points of obp and slg compared to harper. historically, outside of the disastrous heyward deal, baseball contracts are paid on the offense. defense is discounted quite a bit.

OK, so then this feels like one of those hypothetical questions where the line is being blurred between "what would you do?" and "what do you predict an actual GM will end up doing?"

No it was not and I'm sure the brass told him to cut it out.

Because he is not an established major leaguer
He is not guaranteed to make it in the majors (See Montero)
    He could be traded
He is advocating Harper taking a job away from a teammate (Judge and Ellsbury will still be Yankees and possibly Hicks )

He needs to make it to the majors first before he starts acting like a Yankees spokesman.

I used to be a Machado person, but his knees really scare me on a 10yr deal. I really want Harper and his insane bat, and I think he wants to be a Yankee too.

I think I'd sign Harper then grab Arenado the following season.

I gave an opinion. Was asked for more and clearly stated why his tweeting bothers me as a fan. WTF is your problem?

Did it affect his game? Well he has a lot to prove in that department.

he's just a kid enjoying his life as a baseball player. what's wrong with that? as long as he's working hard and has the right mentality. lobbying for harper is pretty good.

you think harper wants to join a team that is stuffy and controlling?

if you want to talk about embarrassment, look no further than felix lopez and cashman's affairs. don't focus on some kid enjoying himself.

ive been saying this about Machado for a while. I want to go full force on Harper. He needs to be a Yankee.

"Grab" Arenado? Dude that would be a huge get. You don't grab Arenado you take him and jump up and down in delight.

I didn't know Machado had knee issues. If he does, then I agree with you.

I know he had a major knee injury that caused him to miss much of a full season several seasons ago but not sure (not saying he doesn't just don't know) it would be classified as chronic.

uh before his knee thing he was putting up andrelton simmons like fielding numbers. that is gone now. he is just regular gold glove level.

but he is at 3b so range isnt THAT crucial, and he's hitting the ball harder than ever.

I just don't ever see Clint becoming a superstar. We have a glutton of OFers. Bryce should be the goal when he becomes a FA. If I can turn Clint into something more useful while he still has a large amount of perceived value, I'd do it ASAP.
    I think you mean glut.

lol, I love Harper, but you're basing that on 68 plate appearances this year? And comparing him to PEAK Bonds? Come on.

As far as FAs are concerned, I'm not married to any of these guys yet. Too many variables still up in the air.

Also between Harper, Machado and Arenado I would be shocked if we gave out two 10 year/$300 plus million contracts that close. So It is likely a matter of choosing one.
