lol, he has players who would be top 3 hitters on most teams on the bench and lets hitters hovering around the mendoza line hit
A fool and his money can throw one heck of a party!

Letting Frazier hit in that situation was bad. Not denying that. Letting Romine bat was bad, but not as bad as letting Frazier bat.

What I don't get is the criticism for the way he used his relievers. How many times have we seen people complain about him leaving people in too long?

The resting is annoying and needs to be trimmed waaaaaaay down, and not PH players in tight situations needs to start happening, but his managing is not nearly as bad as some of you are making it out to be.

It's September 13th. The resting should've stopped weeks ago. The answer for always resting people throughout the year was so they'd be ready for the stretch run in August/September. Well it's crunch time now and it's still happening.

Kudos on the way he used the pen today. I was impressed. The willingness to yank starters earlier, especially veteran starters, is huge.

Yeah I really don't get resting players at this point besides someone like Sanchez who you just can't keep throwing behind the plate. But there was no reason for Didi to rest yesterday or Judge to rest today.

Re: 2017 Joe Girardi Performance Thread

This article lays out that Girardi has had the Yankees outperform their Pythagorean W-L record by an average of 4.5 games every year since he started (for a total of 21 games added above expected since 2008). That said, this year they are underperforming by 9 games, and i looks even worse if you look at other projection systems (2nd and 3rd order projected wins).

People forget that he cost them an ALCS game back in 2009.

DRob entered the bottom of the 11th, retired the first two men. Got pulled for no reason for Al Aceves who promptly gave up a single and double to lose the game. I can see him getting cute with this pen and doing something equally as dumb.

But Clint Frazier popped out in an uncomfortable-looking at-bat to keep it 3-1.

Austin Romine then whiffed for the third out, and the Yankees squandered another opportunity.

“We talked about pinch hitting for Romine, pinch hitting for Frazier,’’ Girardi said of how he handled the inning. “We decided not to. We decided to let them stay in the game. They had a better feel, and some guys aren’t used to pinch hitting.”

This isn't an acceptable excuse. They had a better feel? WTF does that mean?

    Thanks. Joe is right:

We were really fortunate,” Girardi said of the Yankees’ ability to hold on for the win. “We had a lot of chances to add on today and weren’t able to do it.”

I wonder if Clint is ready??? He was 2-17 in his rehab. 8 RISP is not good. Maybe Austin would have been better in RF for Judge. BoSox is losing 6-1.

I can understand not pinch hitting for Romine since then we could lose the DH but C.Frazier had done nothing in this series and had already struck out twice with RISP. Holliday, Judge, Austin on the bench and you can't pinch hit.

So in his entire career Matt Holiday has never pinch hit? You got to be kidding.

We wouldn't lose the DH if he PH Romine. We have Kratz that could have went in the game at C.

It means that Romine and Frazier had a better feel for his netherregions before the game, thus ensuring they'd get their full 4 ABs

I will give you pulling CC is impressive for Joe, but for Garcia? 4 innings is a normal start.

Guy has pitched 6 games for NY. With 3 4+inning starts and 3 5+. Forget quality starts he has never even made it to the 6th.

All of that's true, but he had a few things going for him. A low pitch count, one out from qualifying for the win, and of course his veteran-ness. All things that would normally lead to Joe leaving a guy in there to give up the lead.

Maybe Joe would not want Kratz to catch Betances and Chapman. In that situation if he pinch hit for Romine Sanchez would have moved from DH to Catcher. So I assume that is why Romine batted.

I mean if that is the case then why is Kratz even on this team? If you're not going to PH for Romine in that situation then why even bother to carry a third catcher?

Kratz was acquired only because of the suspensions to Sanchez and Romine. With the expanded rosters really no reason not to keep him.

I feel like you can't really pin the bullpen roulette on Girardi. Between Betances, Chapman and Roberton, it's a crapshoot as to whether or not they'll find the strike zone when he calls upon them. It's like you have to put one of them in and hope for the best.

If the game was tied or the Yankees were trailing I can see Girardi pinch hitting for Romine. But with a lead late he did not want to remove a catcher he clearly trusts and replace him with an unknown that has no experience with the current pitching staff. Also, pinch hitting for Romine would have been "the binder move" to make. He went against the "binder" which is what I though many of you wanted.
