According to baseball-reference, he moved ahead of Jim Bunning and Catfish Hunter for sole possession of 69th in career wins with 225.

CC has been notoriously slow to start the season. Now that he doesn't have to wait until his blazing fastball gets going, maybe he'll be successful early on.

so can we say he sucked in those years because of some serious drinking problems, rather than actual lack of ability to adjust

Knee, alcoholism, weight loss, time to adjust to lesser stuff...who knows?

But still, he's had starts like this sprinkled in here and there the past few seasons. Consistency is the problem.

I think the knee brace has made the biggest impact.

can he actually be a potential trade chip if we're out of contention? i'm happy for his start, he's shown solid velocity, and offspeed stuff. Sure he can't blow people away but he can pitch and it's impressive and I'm happy for him

Consistency is the main problem for 95% of starting pitchers since the 19th century.

Baseball-reference splits use six "months," with March and April as one month and September and regular season games in October as one month. In ERA, winning percentage, K/BB, and WHIP, July has been his worst month and March and April were his second worst month. In opponents' OPS, July was his worst month, August was his second worst month, and March and April was slightly better than August.

It has been a pleasure watching him practice his craft this season. I find myself looking forward to his starts with confidence that he will do a good to very good job. And it really goes back to last year as he continues to show the ability to minimize solid contact. If big Mike and Severino can continue doing what they are doing and Monty can do what we feel he is capable of (I don't worry about Tanaka), this team could really make some noise.

what a difference a year makes. last april, i have no faith in him when he went out to the mound but ever since, he's slowly turned it around through a new approach.

and usually around 92-93 on the fb, which is plenty to get ML hitters out.

yes. wonder if throwing his FB less has allowed him to get a 1 mile or so back on it when he does throw it?

It is amazing how many times that the slow hit clunker hurts Sabathia. Seemingly it always turns into runs for the other team.
