The Official 2017 GREG BIRD Thread

Nobody I'm rooting more for on the team than this guy... hoping he starts off the year with a bang and continues it throughout the season

Here's to many bird puns and clips of Peter Griffin doing his Bird Is The Word dance gifs being posted in this thread

While he does look like a Goomba, this guy is more appropriate.

Won't argue that However, an80 point swing between AVG and OB over a full season is pretty solid. You'll never find Castro or Didi in that range. Ever.

He's got a sweet swing and looks to have a good eye. Seems to hang in there against lefties, too. I don't think he should be platooned based on what I'm seeing so far. 140 starts @ 1B would be great.

A productive Bird/Judge tandem makes this offense very potent IMO. Add Holliday & Sanchez & the Yanks will have totally resolved their middle-of-the-order weakness. 100 HRs 350 RBIs collectively seems pretty realistic, and will make the season very enjoyable.

I was really expecting a poor spring from Bird, as he was coming back from major shoulder surgery, and I have been impressed how well his bat has looked. And I know that it is fools gold to put too much stock into spring training but at least Bird has shown that his shoulder should not limit his potentional in 2017. Also, I hope that his strong spring continues into the regular season and truly limits Carter's appearances at 1st base.

I have liked him since he first came up to NY and think he can be around for a long time.
Good hitter.....perfect for Yankee Stadium. I see him hitting 35 to 40 homers in the next year year. Just stay healthy!

He'll get him a day of rest by game 2. Don't worry.

To the extent that Bird's shoulder needs rest and to the extent that getting steady days off will keep him healthy for the season and beyond, I think the Carter signing is great. Being a bit overcautious in a bridge year with a guy that looks to be a critical piece of the future isn't the worst decision.

Or he could change his mind and rest him opening day instead. Day two is further along into spring so it might be warmer, so there's that.

Yankees open with three at Tampa Bay, then three in Baltimore.

This is how I see it, too. Bird's spring is the single biggest source of optimism on my part. Now, we just need Joe G to stick with him as the starter.

I agree that Joe needs to be hyper cautious regarding Bird's shoulder after missing an entire year but "Carter signing is great"? Not too great....He is a strikeout machine.

True, he may be a K machine and doesn't get on base enough. But that was a very good signing if he's the backup at 1b and DH.

I'd be ................ing thrilled with those numbers. Hell, I'd be completely content with 250/320/470. That's an average MLB 1B, and he's still entering his first full season.

I really, really, really am trying to temper my expectations with Bird and Sanchez this season, so I'm not disappointed with productive seasons. But goddamn, these guys are looking 100% capable of being top 10 at their positions (I mean, the Gary looks like Babe Ruth at this point, lol). If Judge, Sanchez, and Greg all produce this year, I think many people on this board are going to be very excited with this team come the summer.

Re: The Official 2017 GREG BIRD Thread

I think Bird is going to be the kind of first baseman that Giambi and Tex were supposed to be. Minus the locker room porn and constant injuries. That short porch for him in right is going to be reminding us of Donnie knocking them out at old Yankee stadium. I find it hard to believe Carter will be anything more than a strikeout machine though.
