Itís being more sensibly advertised now. Greg Bird is healthy again, and heís back in the picture as a young Yankee regular. If he doesnít get much better at all, heís something like a younger Lucas Duda. And with a step forward somewhere, he becomes a franchise cornerstone. Not everyone is cut out to be an extreme fly-ball hitter. The profile fits Bird like a glove.

I get Tex, but what was wrong with Giambi? Sure he got hurt here and there and had the whole steroid distraction, but for the most part he put up the expected monster production while in a Yankee uniform.

If Bird approximates anything even close to what Giambi actually was for the Yankees, we've hit the powerball as fans.

Bird's already lost an entire season to injury, a little early to declare him less injury-prone than those 2.

Giambi had 15 bWAR in 6 years here, Tex had 20.6 bWAR in 8 years, and Tino had 16.6 in 7 years (it's almost stunning how similarly productive they were considering their very different strengths, albeit with Tino having less peaks and valleys than the other 2).

It's possible he could eclipse those numbers, and he'd obviously do it for much cheaper, but any of those outcomes would obviously be very solid at this point.

We should all be jumping in glee if he ends up being the 1st baseman that Teix and Giambi were (even if we only consider their Yankee careers). The problem with those guys was the contract and not the production (at least for the bulk of their deals).

EDIT: Giambi and Tex basically averaged 3 WAR per season as Yankees. That's a Brandon Belt/Chris Davis/Carlos Santana type player. That's a top 10 1B.

Let's get this be sorted. In 2008, Giambi played in 145 games. He put up a .876 OPS and a 128 OPS+.

Would that do it for you? Logistically, I doubt you can reach.

He's starting to raise my bar for him.

Is 25HR/85RBI/.275/.330/.480 too much to ask for?

Shouldn't that get him into ROTY discussions? Or did he already get too many ABs in 2015?

He had 157 AB in 2015 so he is not ROY eligible. Neither is Sanchez. Judge will be eligible.

Re: The Official 2017 GREG BIRD Thread

The patience and plate discipline he's shown the first two games speaks volumes about his approach and temperament. If he stays healthy I think he's got a shot at being a 30HR + 30 double guy this year.

His ABs are good, he looks to have a really good eye; he just needs to hit the ball.

Swinging through a lot of fastballs. Maybe move him down in the order for a few games and take some pressure off.
