    Pool A
We have a shocker on opening day of the 2017 World Baseball Classic!

Two-time World Baseball Classic runner-up South Korea were stunned in their opening game of the tournament as Israel, who is making their WBC debut, outlasted the hosts inside Seoul's Gocheok Sky Dome, 2-1 in 10 innings.

Former Oakland Athletics infielder Nate Freiman scored the first run of the 2017 WBC in the top half of the second inning after Cleveland Indians minor-league infielder drew a bases-loaded walk.

The South Koreans tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nexen Heroes infielder Seo Geon-chang delivered an RBI single, scoring Hur Kyoung-min.

But South Korean pitchers threw nine walks in the game and it bit them in the 10th.

Former New York Met first baseman Ike Davis drew a one-out walk and former Boston Red Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway singled to move Davis to third. Boston Red Sox minor-league OF Mike Meyers pinch-ran for Davis.

Krieger tried to use a squeeze play to bring Meyers home, but his bunt was popped out to the pitcher for the second out.

Colorado Rockies minor-league SS Scott Burcham plated home the go-ahead run with a infield single.

Former Houston Astros pitcher Josh Zeid grabbed the win when he pitched a 1-2-3 10th inning in his third inning of work including hurling two strikeouts in the frame with the last one on former Seattle Mariner Dae-ho Lee.

Israel takes on Chinese Taipei next while South Korea faces a must-win situation against rising power the Netherlands. Both games in Seoul on March 7.

I watched a bit of the Israel vs Taiwan game. Mostly just to see who I recognize. I noticed a lot of Israels players only seem to be Jewish on their mothers side with names like Baker and Lavarnway. Staten Island Jason Marquis was on the hill for Israel.

World Baseball Classic debutante Israel moved one step closer to the second round of the World Baseball Classic after trouncing Chinese Taipei 15-7.

Former Oakland Athletics infielder Nate Freiman went 3-for-6 with four RBIs including a three-run dinger in the ninth.

Cleveland Indians minor-league infielder Tyler Krieger added a 3-for-5 performance with five RBIs.

Meanwhile, hosts and two-time WBC runners-up South Korea are on the verge of elimination after their Second Round chances took another heavy blow as rising baseball power, the Netherlands blanked them 5-0.

Texas Rangers IF Jurickson Profar led the way going 2-for-4 with a two-run blast in the first inning and former San Francisco Giants draft pick Randolph Oduber added two hits in three at-bats with his own two-run blast.

The Koreans went 0-for-5 with RISP and they need to beat Chinese Taipei in order to avoid qualifying for the 2021 World Baseball Classic.

The Dutch will take on Chinese Taipei on Wednesday where a win can send both the Netherlands and Israel to the Second Round.

Two-time World Baseball Classic champions Japan showcased their power in a 11-6 victory over their 2006 Gold Medal Game combatant Cuba.

Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks IF Nobuhiro Matsuda went 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs including a three-run bomb in the fifth.

Yokohama DeNA BayStars OF Yo................omo Tsutsugoh added a two-run bomb in the seventh.

Cuba's fielding didn't help their cause as they had two errors while Japan turned two double plays.

Cuba takes on China next while Japan hosts Australia.

The Netherlands and Israel both punched their ticket to Round 2 of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Hensley Meulens and the 2013 World Baseball Classic fourth-place finishers left it late to outlast Chinese Taipei 6-5 in a walkoff in the ninth.

Chinese Taipei had a 5-4 lead heading into the eighth as Chang Chih-hao led the way going 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.

But New York Yankees SS Didi Gregorius kept the Dutch in it going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs with a two-run double in the bottom of fourth and helped the Netherlands tie the game at 5-5 with a RBI double in the eighth.

Texas Rangers IF Jurickson Profar helped the Netherlands win in the bottom of the ninth with a bases loaded walk.

With the Netherlands win, Israel also joins them in the second round and will battle it out to see who wins Group A on March 9.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei takes on South Korea in a game to see who finishes third and automatically qualifies for the 2021 tournament while the loser must qualify.

Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks IF Nobuhiro Matsuda tied the game in the top half of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters IF Sho Nakata gave Japan a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh with a solo shot.

The feel good story in the 2017 World Baseball Classic just won Pool A.

Israel goes to the second round after a perfect 3-for-3 in First Round Pool play doubling up the Netherlands 4-2.

Oakland Athletics and former Boston Red Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway led the way2-for-3 with an RBI to bump his batting average to .556 in the tournament.

    The Israelis drew nine walks.

Jason Marquis grabbed the win for Israel after pitching an inning of one-hit ball and New York Mets pitcher Josh Zeid grabbed the save.

The Dutch finished in second place in Pool A and joins Israel in the Second Round.

Meanwhile, South Korea ended another disappointing WBC showing as they qualify for the 2021 tournament after finishing third after outlasting Chinese Taipei 11-8 in 10 innings.

Lotte Giants OF Son A-seop led the Koreans going 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs as the Koreans led 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

But Chinese Taipei refused to quit after forcing extra innings with five unanswered runs.

Former Los Angeles Dodger and New York Mets turned Fubon Guardians SS Chin-lung Hu led the charge with 3 RBIs.

However, the Koreans had the upper hand in the 10th.

Doosan Bears C Yang Eui-ji hit a sacrifice fly to give South Korea a 9-8 lead before Hanwha Eagles first baseman Kim Tae-kyun came off the bench and blasted a two-run bomb to make it 11-8.

St Louis Cardinals reliever Seung Hwan Oh pitched two innings yielding one walk and no hits for the win. Oh had three punchouts.

Chinese Taipei must qualify for the 2021 tournament.

    Pool B - Tokyo, Japan

It will be Cuba that will join Japan to the Second Round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Cuba used a four-run fifth inning to hold off Australia in a 4-3 win.

Brisbane Bandits IF Logan Wade gave the Aussies a 1-0 lead in the top half of the fifth inning with an RBI single.

However, the Cubans took the lead in the bottom half with one mighty swing of the bat.

After getting the first two batters via the strikeout, Minnesota Twins pitcher Lachlan Wells
allowed a two-out single to Roel Santos, an infield single to Alexander Ayala and loaded the bases after walking Frederich Cepeda.

That allowed Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks outfielder Alfredo Despaigne to belt a grand slam to punish Wells who blew his second save of the tournament.
    Despaigne's grand salami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bht9YVVwKqs

Former Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Trent Oeltjen cut Cuba's lead to two in the seventh inning with a solo shot and Adelaide Bite outfielder Mitch Dening made it 4-3 in the eighth with an RBI single.

But Miguel Lahera pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save as Cuba finishes their First Round pool play at 2-1, second behind Japan in Pool B.

Australia finished third in Pool B with a 1-2 record, but qualified for the 2021 World Baseball Classic.

    Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz5C7plkZE4

Meanwhile, Japan finished Pool B in style going 3-0 after demolishing China 7-1.

Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters 1B/OF Sho Nakata and Yomiuri Giants C Seiji Kobayashi
each led the way with two RBIs.

Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks pitcher Shota Takeda pitched three innings and giving up one run for the win.

China finished Pool B play with an 0-3 record and must qualify for the 2021 tournament.

It's not going well. Losing 7-4 to Mexico.
But what a stunning fightback by the Italians in the ninth! Down 9-5 heading into the bottom half of the ninth, Italy scored five runs to walkoff in a 10-9 victory that saw Mexico crestfallen.

Cincinnati Reds OF Sebastian Elizalde led the way for Mexico going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

    However, Mexico's bullpen was atrocious.

New York Mets reliever Fernando Salas didn't get anybody out with his two batters in the fifth.

Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna took the loss after surrendering five runs, four earned in the ninth and failed to get anybody out and Washington Nationals southpaw Oliver Perez took the blown save after failing to get anybody out as well.

Francisco Cervelli did start the Italian rally with a double.

Tigres de Quintana Roo corner infielder and former Seattle Mariner Alex Liddi had a two-run double to cut Mexico's lead to 9-7.

Kansas City Royals C Drew Butera then reached on an error to give Italy runners at the corners with nobody out.

Los Angeles Dodgers IF Drew Maggi walked to load the bases with nobody out which saw Osuna leave the game and Perez was in.

New York Mets OF Brandon Nimmo punished the former New York Met Perez with an RBI single to make it 9-8 and still the bases were loaded with nobody.

Finally, Chicago Cubs OF John Andreoli, who went 2-for-5 in the game with three RBIs, capped off the five-run ninth with an infield single that plated two runs.

What an unbelievable win for Italy and a collapse by Mexico. My goodness.

Italy will take on Venezuela next while Mexico needs to beat their boxing rival Puerto Rico to keep their Second Round chances alive.

    Pool C (Miami)

The United States left it late against Colombia after surviving a scare in a 3-2 victory in 10 innings.

Tampa Bay Rays ace starter Chris Archer kept the Colombians at bay hurling three strikeouts in four scoreless innings.

Chicago White Sox ace starter Jose Quintana was matching Archer with four scoreless innings.

Colombia drew first blood in the top half of the fifth inning when Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mychal Givens gave up two RBI doubles to Adrian Sanchez and Mauricio Ramos.

The Americans fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Quintana left the game after pitching 5 and 2/3 innings allowing one run.

Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones delivered an RBI double to get the United States on the board.

Detroit Tigers pitcher William Cuevas entered the game and struck out Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, but he threw a wild pitch for strike three allowing Detroit Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler to score to tie the game at 2-2.

USA manager Jim Leyland used five relievers in Houston Astros Luke Gregerson, Texas Ranger Sam Dyson, White Sox Nate Jones, Philadelphia Phillies sidearm Pat Neshek and New York Yankee Tyler Clippard to pitch five scoreless innings.

Clippard got the win after the Americans when Adam Jones, who went 2-for-5 in the game, delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the tenth breaking Colombian hearts.

The United States will take on defending World Baseball Classic champion Dominican Republic next where the winner can boost their Second Round chances while Colombia takes on Canada.

    Pool D - Jalisco, Mexico

Puerto Rico had a mercy rule rout on Venezuela after a 11-0 vaporizing after seven innings.

Puerto Rico had a 2-0 lead after three innings when New York Mets infielder T. J. Rivera hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Atlanta Braves outfielder Ender Inciarte and Houston Astros OF/DH Carlos Beltran drew a bases loaded walk.

Puerto Rico added three runs in the sixth when Houston Astros SS Carlos Correa hit a solo shot and St. Louis Cardinals Yadier Molina added a two-run blast.

Puerto Rico knocked Venezuela out with a six-run seventh inning that called the game.

Beltran started it off with a RBI single. Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Baez added an RBI single.

Minnesota Twins infielder Eddie Rosario piled on with an RBI double.

And Rivera made it game, set and match with a two-run bomb.

Puerto Rico can book a spot in the Second Round if they beat hosts Mexico while Venezuela will look to stay alive as they take on Italy.
