    Second Round

Pool F - Petco Park, San Diego
The bullpen continues to be a disaster for Venezuela.

The United States rallied from 2-0 down in the seventh to score four unanswered runs en route to a 4-2 victory.

Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte gave Omar Vizquel's men a 1-0 lead with a third-inning sacrifice fly.

Seattle Mariners ace starter Felix Hernandez pitched five shutout innings with three strikeouts.

King Felix's Mariners teammate Drew Smyly kept the Americans in it with eight punchouts in four and 2/3 innings.

Venezuela bumped their lead to 2-0 at the top of the seventh inning when Texas rangers second baseman Rougned Odor hit a solo shot to right field.

But Odor became the villain with two errors in the game.

Jim Leyland's Americans punished the Venezuelans in the seventh and eighth innings.

Odor's Rangers' teammate C Jonathan Lucroy hit a sacrifice fly to cut Venezuela's lead in half 2-1.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Hector Rondon got roughed up in the eighth as he allowed a leadoff bomb to Baltimore Orioles megastar CF Adam Jones and a two-run blast to Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer.

It is Venezuela's second blown save of the tournament.

Houston Astros reliever Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless ninth to nail down the save as Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez grounded to a game-ending double play.

The Americans will take on Puerto Rico next with the winner clinching at least a tiebreaker game appearance while Venezuela duels with the Dominican Republic in a must win game for both teams.

Petco seems like a bad venue for the US team. The offense is pretty reliant on the long ball.

    Second Round

Pool F - San Diego (Petco Park)
The defending World Baseball Classic champions the Dominican Republic kept their 2017 WBC hopes alive after shutting out Venezuela 3-0.

After San Diego Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin and Miami Marlins starter Edinson Volquez
had a scoreless duel after four innings, Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Gregory Polanco broke the deadlock with a solo shot in the fifth inning to give the Dominicans a 1-0 lead.

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano plated home another run in the seventh inning with an RBI single.

And Cano's Mariners' teammate Nelson Cruz added more insurance with his second home run of the tournament in the eighth.

Boston Red Sox lefty reliever Fernando Abad grabbed the win with a scoreless inning and New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia pitched his first save of the tournament.

The Dominicans will take on the United States in their final Second Round game while Venezuela will take on Puerto Rico.

    Second Round

Pool E - San Diego (Petco Park)
Puerto Rico punched their ticket to Dodger Stadium.

The U.S. Commonwealth held off a furious United States rally in the ninth to win Pool E in a 6-5 triumph.

With that win, Puerto Rico will take on Pool E runner-up the Kingdom of the Netherlands in one semifinal in Chavez Ravine. Puerto Rico has the head-to-edge on both the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Puerto Rico's win also officially eliminated Venezuela from Championship Round contention.

Edwin Rodriguez's men jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning after Houston Astros duo of Carlos Correa and Carlos Beltran and St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina each had RBI singles and Minnesota Twin Eddie Rosario had a sacrifice double play.

Jim Leyland's Americans got on the board in the top of the second when Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer had an RBI single.

The United States kept chipping away with solo shots in the top of the fifth and sixth innings from San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey and Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones as Puerto Rico's lead was cut to one, 4-3.

But Puerto Rico had two runs in the bottom of the sixth from a throwing error from Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado as they lead 6-3.

The United States cut Puerto Rico's lead to one again in the top of the ninth as San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford had an RBI triple with two outs.

However, Seattle Mariner Edwin Diaz still grabbed his second save of the tournament when he struck out Josh Harrison.

The United States will take on the Dominican Republic on Saturday to see who will take on Pool E winner Japan in the second semifinal.

    Even a greater game today.

Puerto Rico wins Pool F undefeated in style after destroying Venezuela 13-2.

Atlanta Braves SS Mike Aviles led the way for the 2013 silver medalists going 4-for-5 with three RBIs.

What a way to have a successful tuneup against the Netherlands in the first semifinal on Monday from Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium.

USA baseball is such garbage. Can't even make it out of the first inning without giving up runs to DR.

Mike went to high school in Middletown, NY. I remember seeing his name in the Times Herald Record (they would track local players through their minor careers and into the majors). One of the best players to emerge from the Orange County area, along with Joe Nathan (who also went to my alma mater, Stony Brook) and Matt Morris.

OK, I'm not really paying attention to the WBC, but that was a pretty good game. And Betances can come home! (Though, Clippard is stuck with Team USA for a bit longer.)

The United States made the final four of the World Baseball Classic for the first time since 2009, but they have a very big test in the second semifinal against Japan.

Jim Leyland's Americans showed they won't quit and they will be in every game after a pretty good revenge win when they eliminated the defending World Baseball Classic champions Dominican Republic last night in San Diego's Petco Park 6-3.

BB55's Primer - 2017 World Baseball Classic: Championship Round

Semifinal #1: Netherlands vs. Puerto Rico
March 20, 2017 9 PM ET/6 PM PT Los Angeles (Dodger Stadium)

Overview: Puerto Rico has been steamrolling in the 2017 World Baseball Classic as one of two teams with 6-0 records coming into the Championship Round with the other team being Japan.

Edwin Rodriguez and the Puerto Ricans led by St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor, and Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa along with veteran outfield/designated hitter Carlos Beltran, Milwaukee Brewers young gun Jorge Lopez and Seattle Mariners reliever Edwin Diaz are looking to follow up their 2013 World Baseball Classic runners-up finish with a title in the 2017 tournament.

However, standing in Puerto Rico's way of a second straight trip to the World Baseball Classic Championship Game is the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Hensley Meulens and the Dutch squad are fresh off advancing in a very difficult group in the Second Round in Tokyo that included two-time World Baseball Classic champions Japan, surprising top eight finishers Israel and baseball power Cuba.

Former Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds outfielder/designated hitter and current Tokyo Yakult Swallows player Wladimir Balentien has been tearing the 2017 WBC tournament apart with a .591 batting average with three home runs, eight runs and 10 RBIs.

Texas Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar is no slouch either with a .522 clip and the Dutch also have Baltimore Orioles infielder Jonathan Schoop and Boston Red Sox infielder Xander Bogaerts backing them up.

However, the Dutch will miss a significant bat in their lineup when New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius will miss the rest of the tournament with a bruised right shoulder during one of the Netherlands' tuneups for the Championship Round against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Without Gregorius' eight RBIs, it's up to the likes of Profar, Schoop and Bogaerts to chip in and ease the burden off Balentien.

    Key matchup: Depth
The Netherlands need to find ways to keep themselves in the ballgame without Gregorius on offense and their pitching staff keeping the likes of Molina, Correa and Beltran at bay with former Florida/Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles hurler Rick van den Hurk taking the ball against a offensive juggernaut who is batting .338 with runners in scoring position in the tournament.

If the Dutch can keep it close, will they have a little more extra as a group? That will be put to the test as Los Angeles Dodgers' closer Kenley Janssen was added to the team.

Prediction: I think it's a tossup between these two teams. With the Puerto Ricans trying to make the World Baseball Classic for the second straight year and the Netherlands are looking for their first trip to the WBC title game to top their fourth place finish in 2013, something's gotta give.

It's going to be a dogfight to the finish in the first semifinal and in the end, I think Puerto Rico has a little more extra to outlast a gamed Netherlands squad.

BB55's Pick: Puerto Rico over the Netherlands
