The Dominican Republic punches their ticket to the Second Round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Seattle Mariners infielder Jean Segura led the way going 3-for-6 with a bases clearing double in the 11th sparking a seven-run inning after Colombia came back from 3-1 down and forced extra innings.

Colombia was in a favorable position to advance in the group based on their runs allowed record with four before today's game. They're up to 14 after the loss and they need a lot of help in the United States-Canada game.

Jim Leyland and the Americans control their own destiny. If the USA wins, they're in the second round.

If Canada wins, it will come down to tiebreakers involving those three teams to see who joins the Dominican Republic in San Diego's Petco Park in the Second Round.

    Pool D - Jalisco, Mexico

Puerto Rico is going to San Diego.

Puerto Rico finishes their first round pool play with a perfect 3-for-3 pulling away from Italy 9-3.

Chicago Cubs OF John Andreoli gave Italy a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-run homer.

However, fellow Cub Javier Baez answered with a RBI single to get Puerto Rico on the board.

Kansas City Royals C Drew Butera hit a solo shot to give Italy a 3-1 lead in the top half of the second inning.

However, it was all Puerto Rico after that as they scored eight unanswered runs.

Houston Astros third baseman Carlos Correa had a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Los Angeles Dodgers LF Enrique Hernandez added two RBIs while going 3-for-4.

Italy finishes their pool play at 1-2 and allowed 29 runs. They will await the results on the Venezuela-Mexico game.

If Venezuela wins, they're in the second round. If Mexico wins, all those three teams will have 1-2 records and it will come down to tiebreakers.

Runs allowed heading into the VEN-MEX game.

It's a World Baseball Classic that Ryan Dempster will want to forget as he went 0-2 with a 27.00 ERA.

Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado took him deep with a three-run jimmy jack.

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey went 2-for-4 with three RBIs including a solo shot in the seventh.

A pretty good shutout win for Team USA as Kansas City Royals southpaw Danny Duffy led the way with seven strikeouts in four innings pitched.

    First Round

    Pool D - Jalisco, Mexico
Mexico has caused a tiebreaker game between Italy and Venezuela.

Mexico was eliminated from the tournament despite beating Venezuela 11-9.

Italy, Mexico and Venezuela are tied with 1-2 records, but Italy and Venezuela play in the tiebreaker due to better Runs Allowed/Innings Pitched rates (Italy 1.053, Venezuela 1.105 and Mexico 1.117).

Former New York Yankees and Houston Astros third baseman Brandon Laird and Tigres de Quintana Roo infielder Esteban Quiroz each had three RBIs as Mexico once had a 8-1 lead in the middle of the fifth inning including a five-run second inning.

Texas Rangers C Robinson Chirinos, Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez and Miami Marlins utility player Martin Prado kept Venezuela in the game with two RBIs each, but Mexico hangs on.

    Second Round

    Pool E - Tokyo, Japan
The Netherlands handed Team Israel their first loss of the 2017 World Baseball Classic tournament after routing them in a mercy rule win after eight innings 12-2.

New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius led the way going 2-for-3 with 5 RBIs including a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

Gregorius is tied with Japan's Sho Nakata for the most RBIs in the tournament with eight and has a .429 batting average.

Former Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds left fielder Wladimir Balentien added a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs to bump his batting average to .556.

The Dutch will take on Cuba in their final Second Round game while Israel will have a mighty test against hosts and two-time WBC champion Japan in their final showdown in Pool E.

First Round - Pool D: Jalisco, Mexico

Venezuela grabs the final spot in Pool F the Second Round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Omar Vizquel's squad fought back to outlast Italy 4-3 in the Pool D tiebreaker game to punch their ticket to San Diego.

Italy and Venezuela were in the tiebreaker game based on better runs allowed per defensive innings played. Mexico also filed protest against the ruling after they beat Venezuela.
    http://www.si.com/mlb/2017/03/13/ven...bc-tiebreaker; http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...test/99114100/

Arizona Diamondbacks IF Daniel Descalso gave Italy a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single.

Former Cincinnati Reds pitcher A.J. Morris pitched five shutout innings with five strikouts.

However, the Italian bullpen faltered the first time when Atlanta Braves OF Ender Inciarte
delivered an RBI single that was deflected into the outfield by Cleveland Indians OF Chris Colabello to pull the Venezuelans level at 1-1 in the sixth.

But Chicago Cubs OF John Andreoli blasted his third home run of the tournament in the seventh inning to give Italy a 2-1 lead late in the game.

However, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera threw a monkey wrench in Italy's Second Round plans when he tied the game at 2-2 in the ninth with a leadoff solo shot off former MLB minor leaguer Mike DeMark. Texas Rangers second baseman Rogned Odor continued DeMark's misery with a RBI single that scored San Diego Padres IF Yangervis Solarte to give Venezuela their first lead of the game at 3-2.

Odor's hit was initially ruled a home run to center, but it was changed to an RBI single after umpire review.

DeMark pitched to three batters in the ninth and got nobody out.

Kansas City Royals SS Alcides Escobar made it a 4-2 Venezuelan lead with an RBI sacrifice bunt.

Italy cut Venezuela's lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the ninth when former Seattle Mariners corner infielder Alex Liddi hit a leadoff blast off Detroit Tigers reliever Francisco Rodriguez.

But K-Rod recovered to grab the next three outs to get the save and help Venezuela advance to the Second Round.

Here are the tiebreaker rules in Pool Play
    https://www.worldbaseballclassic.com...es#tiebreakers

    Second Round:

In the Second Round, the Teams in each pool shall be ranked according to the percentages of games won in the Second Round, without regard to the results of the First Round. The two Teams with the highest such percentages in each Second Round pool shall advance to the Championship Round.

If at the end of pool play in the First and Second Rounds of the Tournament, teams within a pool are tied with an identical winning percentage, then tie shall be broken in the following order of priority. The higher ranked Federation Team will be the home team.

    Tie-Breaking Scenarios:

First and Second Place Teams Tied: In the event that the first and second-place teams are tied for Pool Winner designation, the Team that defeated the other tied Team in that Round shall be ranked higher in the pool standings for that Round.

Three Teams Tied 2-1: If there are three teams 2-1, then the tiebreaker rules would be applied to rank the three, and the first-ranked team would advance. The second and third-ranked teams would play a game to determine who the second-place team is. The tiebreaker rules applied would be as follows:

Step 1: The tied Teams shall be ranked in the standings for that Round according to fewest runs allowed divided by the number of innings (including partial innings) played in defense in the games in that Round between the Teams tied.

Step 2: The tied Teams shall be ranked in the standings according to fewest earned runs allowed divided by the number of innings (including partial innings) played in defense in the games in that Round between the Teams tied.

Step 3: The tied Teams shall be ranked in the standings according to highest batting average in games in that Round between the Teams tied.

Step 4: Standings shall be determined by the drawing of lots, conducted by WBCI.

Three Teams Tied 1-2: If there are three teams tied 1-2, then the tiebreaker rules would be applied to rank the three, and the first two ranked teams would play a tiebreaker game, the winner of which would advance. The tiebreaker rules will be applied as follows:

    Second Round

    Pool E - Tokyo
Two-time World Baseball Classic champions Japan moved one step closer to the Championship Round inside Los Angeles' Dodgers Stadium next week after pulling away from Cuba late 8-5.

Japan goes to 2-0 in Pool E play while Cuba falls to 0-2.

Japan jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning when Tokyo Yakult Swallows second baseman Tetsuto Yamada clubbed a solo shot.

However, Cuba replied by taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the second when Yurisbel Gracial hit a two-run homer.

Japan tied the game at 2-2 in the third when Pool A MVP and Yokohama DeNA BayStars OF Yo................omo Tsutsugoh hit a RBI single.

Cuba took their second lead of the game at 4-2 in the top half of the fourth inning when Victor Mesa delivered a two-run single, but Tsutsugoh made a nice defensive play to get Yosvany Alarcon out at third.

Japan kept chipping away though when they scored two in the fifth to make it 4-4.

Houston Astros OF Nori Aoki had an RBI groundout and Tsutsugoh added another RBI single.

Cuba had their third lead of the game in the top half of the sixth at 5-4 after Alarcon delivered an RBI single.

But Japan just won't go away when Yomiuri Giants C Seiji Kobayashi delivered an RBI single in the bottom half of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

Japan took over the game from there.

After Tokyo Yakult Swallows pitcher Ryo Akiyoshi pitched a scoreless eighth, Japan scored three times in the bottom half when Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks 1B/OF Seiichi Uchikawa gave Japan a 6-5 lead with a sacrifice fly and Yamada hit a two-run blast to extend Japan's lead to 8-5.

Saitama Seibu Lions submarine sidearm pitcher Kazuhisa Makita grabbed the save after pitching a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.

Japan will need to beat Israel to assure their place in the Championship Round while Cuba needs to beat the Netherlands to stand a chance at a possible tie-breaker game.

    Second Round

Pool F - San Diego (Petco Park)

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina was the key man in Puerto Rico's 3-1 victory over the defending World Baseball Classic champions Dominican Republic inside San Diego's Petco Park.

Molina gave Puerto Rico a 1-0 lead with an RBI single.

However, Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz answered for the Dominicans with a home run to take the game at 1-1.

The initial call was no home run until the umpires declare that hit a home run after umpire review.

The Puerto Rican bullpen kept the Dominican bats at bay after that.

Minnesota Twins P Hector Santiago, Detroit Tiger minor-leaguer Joe Jimenez and Cleveland Indian Joe Colon combined for 5 and 2/3 scoreless relief conceding three hits and had five strikeouts.

The Dominican Republic went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position in the loss.

Minnesota Twins OF Eddie Rosario hit a RBI ground-rule double in the sixth to give Puerto Rico.

Molina gave Puerto Rico a little more breathing room with a solo shot in the eighth as Puerto Rico led 3-1.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Edwin Diaz pitched 1 and 1/3 scoreless innings to grab the save.

The Dominicans take on Venezuela next while Puerto Rico tangles the United States in their second game.

I hold a similar sentiment, but for different reasons. I don't remember the specifics as well as I used to, but I still recall that HPB led to a big Yankee rally and you guys went on to win that game. He was facing a team who hit him very well, and he chose to put a man on to lead off an inning for petty and personal reasons. That's unprofessional and contributed to the loss of a game.

To make matters worse, A-Rod also took him deep the next time he faced him that game. Now it's impossible to say that the earlier HBP had anything to do with that directly, but it sure as hell doesn't look good. This was a close game that the Red Sox had been winning, and we were in a very tight division race with TB at the time.

It would be an overstatement to say that was unforgiveable, but I've never looked at Dempster the same way again.

On topic, I love the WBC and have since it's inception. Anything that contributes to the growth of the game is beneficial to MLB long term, and it's almost undeniable that the series produces exciting and dramatic games. It's also a blast watching all these fans of other countries get so hype for these games. Obviously it will never mean that much here, but I really enjoy it.

And in convincing fashion as well.

The Netherlands destroyed Cuba 14-1 via mercy rule after seven innings.

Former Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds left fielder Wladimir Balentien should get some consideration for Pool E MVP after he went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two home runs.

The Dutch went 7-for-10 with RISP in the rout.

The Netherlands will take on the winner of Pool F in the semifinals in Chavez Ravine next week.

    Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aur8p2torg

As for Japan, they ended Israel's dream tournament run with a 8-3 clip.

Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks OF Seiichi Uchikawa and fellow Hawks teammate Nobuhiro Matsuda led Japan with two RBIs each.

For Israel, their story ends, but what a tournament they had when they won Pool A over both South Korea and the Netherlands and beat Cuba.

Japan will draw the Pool F runner-up in their semifinal clash.
