Re: 2017 NCAA Division I Football Season (FBS and FCS)

If this was Scott Frost's last game inside the Bounce House in Orlando with the Central Florida Knights, what way to go out.

From 0-12 in 2015 to a 12-0 season with an American Athletic Conference title and a New Year's Six Bowl game for the #14 ranked team in the nation as UCF outlasted #20 ranked Memphis Tigers in a high-scoring thriller 62-55 in Double Overtime.

It was an ugly win for the Knights as they won the game despite four turnovers.

UCF McKenzie Milton completed 28 of 40 passes for 494 yards and five touchdowns despite throwing three interceptions. Milton also added 64 rushing yards and a score.

Tre'Quan Smith and Dredrick Snelson led the UCF aerial attack as Smith had six receptions for 161 yards and two receiving majors while Snelson chipped in with nine catches for 145 yards and two scores as UCF once led 48-34 with 9:51 to go.

But Riley Ferguson and the Memphis Tigers refused to quit.

Ferguson had 471 passing yards on 30 of 42 completions for 471 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to Anthony Miller who caused havoc on the UCF defense with 14 catches for 195 yards and a receiving hat trick.

The Memphis ground game also gave the UCF defense fits. Darrell Henderson had 109 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Patrick Taylor, Jr. added 107 yards and a score on 19 carries and Tony Pollard had 143 total yards from scrimmage and two total offensive touchdowns including 71 on the ground and a 66-yard scamper.

Memphis had a chance to hand UCF their first loss of the season when Riley Patterson had a 51-yard field goal attempt, but missed.

The Tigers had a second crack in regulation when Milton threw a pick, but the UCF defense held them down with a sack as Ferguson was sacked four times in the game as the AAC title game went into overtime.

In the first overtime period, UCF won the toss and elected defense.

Ferguson drew first blood for Memphis with a 15-yard touchdown strike to Miller and Patterson booted the extra point.

UCF levelled the scores at 55 and forced double overtime when Adrian Killins Jr. banged his way in from two yards out and Matthew Wright booted the extra point.

UCF took the lead at the start of the second overtime period when Otis Anderson, who had 117 rushing yards in the game, punched his way into the end zone from one yard and Wright kicked the extra point to give UCF a 62-55 lead.

Memphis needed to reply with a touchdown and a extra point to force triple overtime, but Ferguson had his pass intercepted by Trey Neal and the UCF crown inside Spectrum Stadium went berserk as they were crowned AAC champions and punched their ticket to a New Year's Six Bowl game.

#3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners punched their ticket to the College Football Playoff Final Four.

Lincoln Riley and the Sooners win their third straight Big XII title, their 11th Big XII title overall and their 47th conference title overall after a 41-17 romp over the #11 ranked Texas Christian Horned Frogs inside Arlington's AT&T Stadium.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield states his case for the Heisman Trophy after completing 15 of 23 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns.

The OU defense had two takeaways including a Caleb Kelly scoop and six off a Kyle Hicks' lost fumble.

Meanwhile inside Detroit's Ford Field, the Toledo Rockets win the Mid-American Conference title after a 45-28 victory over the Akron Zips.

Toledo QB Logan Woodside had 307 passing yards on 23 of 37 completions and four touchdowns, two of them to Diontae Johnson.

    Toledo had five turnovers however.

The FBS Bowl slate is complete.

Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns won't be bowl eligible after they ended their season at 5-7 overall as the Appalachian State Mountaineers crushed them 63-14.

Meanwhile, the New Mexico State Aggies are the 81st and last team to become bowl eligible in 2017 after they finished their season at 6-6 overall after edging out the South Alabama Jaguars 22-17.

So, 81 teams are bowl eligible and will await their fate on bowl selection Sunday on December 3.

78 teams will play in a bowl game while three will have their bowl hopes dashed.

For the first time since 2005, the Georgia Bulldogs are Southeastern Conference champions.

Kirby Smart and the #6 ranked team of the nation gained sweet revenge on their Old Deep South rivals and #2 ranked Auburn Tigers 28-7 inside Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium to send a message to the College Football Playoff selection committee.

It looked like Gus Malzahn and the Tigers picked up where they left off in their 40-17 romp inside Jordan-Hare Stadium when Jarrett Stidham connected with Nate Craig-Myers from six yards out to give Auburn a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

But it was all Georgia from there on.

UGA Bulldogs QB Jake Fromm completed 16 of 22 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Nick Chubb didn't score a touchdown despite having 77 yards and Sony Michel had to leave the game with a knee injury in the third quarter.

But D'Andre Swift led the Georgia rushing attack with 88 yards and a 64-yard touchdown scamper.

The Georgia defense had two takeaways and sacked Stidham three times.

Auburn RB Kerryon Johnson had to play with a banged up right shoulder and was ineffective with 44 rushing yards.

Will the SEC title be enough for Georgia? Smart and company will await the final reveal of the Top Four rankings at high Noon ET/9 AM PT on Sunday.

The #1 ranked Clemson Tigers will attempt to defend their national title.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers vaporized the #7 ranked Miami Hurricanes 38-3 to win the Atlantic Coast Conference title inside Charlotte, NC's Bank of America Stadium.

Clemson Tigers QB Kelly Bryant completed 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Deon Cain. Bryant also added a touchdown run.

The Clemson defense swarmed the Miami Hurricanes offense allowing 214 yards, had three takeaways and sacked Miami QB Malik Rosier four times.

So, Clemson is in the College Football Playoff for the third straight year.

The #8 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes survive!

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes win the Big Ten Conference Championship holding off the #4 ranked Wisconsin Badgers 27-21 inside Indianapolis, IN's Lucas Oil Stadium.

Paul Chryst and the Badgers lose their first game of the season.

After having minor knee surgery during the week, Ohio State Buckeyes QB J.T. Barrett had 271 yards of total offense and two total touchdowns, but threw two interceptions including one for a pick-six from Andrew Van Ginkel in the first quarter.

Mike Weber was benched after losing a fumble, but J.K. Dobbins picked up the slack with 174 rushing yards on 17 carries.

But the Badgers refused to quit.

Rafael Gaglianone kicked two field goals and Chris James had a one-yard punch to pull the Badgers to within six, 27-21 late in the fourth quarter.

However, Greg Schiano's Buckeye defense stepped up with three sacks on Alex Hornibrook and picked him off twice.

So, with #1 ranked Clemson and #3 Oklahoma solidifying their top three spots, it will come down to #6 Georgia, #5 Alabama and #8 Ohio State for the final two spots in the College Football Playoff Final Four on Bowl Selection Sunday.

The Mountain West Conference title goes to the Boise State Broncos.

Boise State edged out #25 ranked Fresno State Bulldogs 17-14 to win the Mountain West in the Smurf Turf.

After Haden Hoggarth's 31-yard field goal gave the BSU Broncos a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, Fresno State QB Marcus McMaryion gave the Bulldogs a 14-10 lead after three quarters with two touchdown runs.

However, a three-yard touchdown run from Alexander Mattison kept Boise State in the game and Ryan Wolpin's two-yard punch gave the Broncos the win with 4:42 remaining in regulation.

The Boise State defense was another hero with the only takeaway of the game when McMaryion threw a interception and Brett Rypien threw for 246 yards with no interceptions.

Re: 2017 NCAA Division I Football Season (FBS and FCS)

BB55's Three Studs and Three Duds - College Football After Week 14

    Three Studs
    1. The 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship Game
Why? The 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship Game between the #14 ranked Central Florida Knights and the #20 ranked Memphis Tigers had everything inside Orlando's Spectrum Stadium and then some.

With a place in the New Year's Six bowl game as the best non-power five conference team in the nation on the line, both teams combined for the highest scoring conference championship game ever with 117 points and combined for almost 1500 yards of offense.

Mike Norvell, Riley Ferguson and the Tigers came in with nothing to lose and gave them a scare in Orlando while Scott Frost and the Knights put their undefeated season on the line.

Both teams left it all on the field until UCF outlasted them in Double Overtime.

It was bittersweet for Frost as the rumor surfaced that he accepted the head coach position with the Nebraska Cornhuskers as the game went into overtime before it became official after the game.

It remains to be seen if Frost and his assistants will coach the UCF Knights one last time in their bowl game before Frost leaves for Nebraska.

    2. Florida State Seminoles in the post-Jimbo Fisher era
Why? Full marks to Florida State interim head coach Odell Haggins for leading his team to bowl eligibility after Jimbo Fisher resigned to accept the head coaching position with the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Seminoles are bowl eligible after a 42-10 victory over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.

    3. FCS National Championship chaos in the Second Round
Why? The 2017 NCAA Division I FCS National Championship playoffs had some shockwaves in the Second Round as three seeds were bounced out.

The Weber State Wildcats blew out the #8 seed Southern Utah Thunderbirds 30-13, the New Hampshire Wildcats edged the #4 seed Central Arkansas Bears 21-15 and the Kennesaw State Owls grabbed a huge scalp over the #3 seed Jacksonville State Gamecocks 17-7.

    Three Duds
    1. Tennessee Volunteers' head coaching search
Why? Just when the Vols thought they lured Ohio State Buckeyes defensive coordinator and former Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano to their official post, the Vols fans protested against the hire after reports surfaced about his association in the Jerry Sandusky child-sex scandal while at Penn State which resulted in the university withdrawing the offer.

Good luck to former Tennessee head coach and interim athletic director Phillip Fulmer on cleaning up this mess. Maybe Fulmer should be the head coach himself a la Bill Snyder.

    2. The College Football Playoff Committee's Final revel of the Top Four teams on Selection Sunday.
Why? The Clemson Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners solidify their Top Four spots with their conference title wins. Probably ditto for the Georgia Bulldogs.

So, it's up to the committee to decide between the #8 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes who have two losses, but has a conference title and the #5 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide who have one loss, but don't have a conference title.

That will be a tough one.

    3. The Bowl Selectors for the 81 bowl eligible teams
Why? There were 81 bowl eligible teams in 2017 and only 78 of them will play in the 39-bowl game slate.

It will be disappointing for those three teams who reach the bowl eligibility plateau and not be selected for a bowl game.

It really sucks that OSU was left out, but that just shows that every game is still critically important. Without that loss to Iowa OSU is easily top 4 due to body of work.

That said, Alabama definitely passes the eye test and it would be ridiculous to say that their one loss against a team that beat also beat Georgia isn't better than OSU played throughout the year.

I can see OSU being back next year in the playoffs; but Meye/Schiano need to get that defense shored up. The talent on the team is outrageous and even though Barrett was an exciting talent his inconsistency really let this team down. Buckeyes don't rebuild, they simply re-load (or in this case are already loaded with top tier talent) for next year.

For the second straight year, the Army Black Knights keep the Commander-in-Chief's trophy.

Army edged out the Navy Midshipmen 14-13 inside a snowy Philadelphia Lincoln Financial Field to win the annual Army-Navy game.

Darnell Woolfolk helped West Point draw first blood with a three-yard touchdown run to give Army a 7-0 lead.

Navy K Bennett Moehring got the Midshipmen on the board with a 28-yard field goal as Navy trailed Army 7-3 after the first quarter.

Navy took a 10-7 halftime lead when Malcolm Perry burst a 68-yard touchdown run.

But Army made a crucial play that could've gave Navy a 17-7 lead in the third quarter.

Perry thought he had another huge touchdown run, but Army's John Voit made a shoestring touchdown saving tackle to deny Perry his second touchdown run.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGOeirrcjL4

Moehring ended up kicking a 24-yard field goal to give Navy a 13-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

But Army grabbed their second lead of the game when Ahmad Bradshaw punched a one-yard touchdown run into the end zone as the Black Knights led 14-13 with 5:10 remaining in regulation.

Navy had a chance to win the game in the dying seconds, but Moehring's 48-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left as Army keeps the Commanders-In-Chief trophy at West Point for another year.
