There are plenty of legal experts that take the opposite side. The Constitution says the president "shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed". Part of executing immigration law involves determining who should be deported and in what order. No one is rounding up 11M immigrants and deporting them at once so there has to be a system of order in place. Obama used the same discretion that other presidents have used: as long as they were low-priority and had not committed any crimes, he allowed deferring their deportation. Trump is doing the same thing when he says deport criminals first. Just because it was on a larger scale than had been done prior does not make it suddenly illegal.

Re: Non-Presidential News Stories That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread Thread

Not sure if this is thread-worthy or not but has anyone else been following the USA Gymnatics doctor sexual assault story?

    https://deadspin.com/for-20-years-gy...y-a-1792697880

Nineteen-ninety-six was the year the U.S. women’s gymnastics team first won team gold at the Olympics. It was also the first year that Larry Nassar acted as the team doctor at an Olympic Games. And according to Irvine-based attorney John Manly, who represents dozens of plaintiffs in a civil suit against, among others, Nassar, USA Gymnastics, and Michigan State University (where the doctor was on the faculty and saw MSU athletes and other patients in the clinic), it is possible that he sexually abused at least one member of every U.S. Olympic team every year from then until last year. “It’s not possible that he wasn’t hurting at least one child on those [Olympic teams],” Manly told the OC Register.
He has pled guilty to all federal and state charges against him. They are currently on day 5 of his sentancing hearing. This monster had the balls to write a letter to the judge saying that it's not good for his mental health to have to hear all the victims talk about why he deserves the max punishment.

    https://deadspin.com/larry-nassar-in...s-s-1822203963

Larry Nassar, who admitted to decades of sexual abuse of girls and young women, often under the guise of medical treatment, wrote a letter to the judge in charge of his sentencing hearing in which he accused her of using the hearing to get media attention for herself and expressed concern about his mental capacity to listen to his victims read their statements in court.

“She wants me to sit in the witness box next to her for all four days so the media cameras will be directed toward her,” Nassar wrote in the letter. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina read excerpts of the six-page letter in court today.

“I’m very concerned about my ability to be able to face witnesses this next four days mentally,” he wrote.
    https://deadspin.com/michigan-state-...-ab-1821129797

His former employer, Michigan State is failing to meet the very very low bar set by Penn State when they had their resident pedophile scandal come to light.

MSU’s response to the Nassar sexual abuse scandal has been poorly handled, even by the standards of another university widely thought to have poorly handled its own child sexual molestation scandal. If an institution in the middle of a sexual abuse scandal does not want to be compared to the Catholic church, they also don’t want to be compared to Penn State.

Penn State, unlike MSU, made their investigation into how they mishandled allegations of sexual abuse against Jerry Sandusky available almost immediately to the public after the board trustees had a chance to see it. The Freeh Report did not make Penn State look good, to say the very least, and major figures at Penn State were forced to resign or were fired in the wake of the Sandusky molestation scandal, including legendary football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier. Spanier and two others at Penn State faced criminal charges and were sentenced to prison.

Denhollander was among those who noticed that Michigan State, at least so far, has not lived up even to that standard. Penn State had previously been viewed as the poster child of how not to address a child molestation crisis at your institution, Denhollander pointed out after Nassar’s sentencing. She said, “MSU has eclipsed them by a long shot.”
And finally, one of his victims told the court that her parents are still getting bills for her treatment sessions with Nassar...where he molsted her.

    https://deadspin.com/larry-nassar-vi...sex-1822297343

Emma Ann Miller, who is just 15 years old, stood next to her mother and addressed the court. Speaking with remarkable poise, Miller explained that she has known Nassar her whole life and considered him to be a male role model and a friend. She also sought treatment from Nassar, who sexually abused her as he did so many others who considered him to be a friend. She said that the last “treatment” she received from Nassar was in August 2016, possibly making her the last child to be assaulted by the former physician. Rachael Denhollander filed her report with the MSU police in August 2016, which led to Nassar’s employment termination.

One of the most appalling details in Miller’s statement was when she said that MSU sports medicine clinic is still trying to charge her for her visits to Nassar. “My mom is still getting billed for appointments where I was sexually assaulted,” she said in her statement.

Rhody I've been following it for a while. Absolutely disgusting.

I think we talked about it some last week when Nasser cried about having to listen to his "victim statements" and how it was causing HIM distress.

I suspect there may e some large civil suits coming in the near future but that won't change what he did.

The Senate headed toward overwhelming passage of a short-term spending bill later in the day Monday after voting to end debate by a vote of 81-18. The House was then expected to pass the measure and send it to President Trump for his signature, laying the groundwork for the government to reopen by Monday evening.
The spending bill would fund the government through Feb. 8 and reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years.
    Good and bad.

So the government going for 4 more weeks? So we could have this again next month

Reauthorizes CHIP for 6 years, very good.

Does not address DACA which is fine here but gets no guarantees that it will come up for a vote anytime soon.

It would be nice if they got a vote in on that or at least started committee hearings before the February 8 next deadline.

I wonder if the House will pass this, there was talk last week they wouldn't go for something this short but I doubt they want to be seen as holding things up since everyone of them is facing reelection in November.

No, he didn’t make a decision that part of a law would not be enforced. He made a decision about the circumstances under which it would or would not be enforced. He did not declare anyone here illegally to be suddenly legal; he said that enforcement under certain approved circumstances would be deferred for two years.

It’s a point that can be argued, and has been. But to say outright that it was illegal, as a fact, is entirely presumptuous. It implies a level of expertise and authority that you don’t have.

Pennsylvania’s congressional district map is a partisan gerrymander that “clearly, plainly and palpably” violates the state’s constitution, the state’s Supreme Court said on Monday, joining a string of court decisions that have struck down political maps that unduly favor one political party.

    Read the article.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I was seriously hoping there was more to the story to justify these actions, but there was not. A misdemeanor 26 years ago? Dumb.

I hadn't been following this story until I read an article from ESPN's Outside the Lines yesterday. I can't fathom how this could be happening for so long. It's sad and disappointing that the mechanisms put in place to catch these abuses failed so spectacularly.

Pretty sure MSU is in for some big time lawsuits. They acted more complacent then PSU.

The House joined the Senate in passing the bill to fund the government through Feb. 8, reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program and roll back several health-care taxes. It passed 81-18 in the Senate and 266-150 in the House.
    Shutdown over...unless Trump vetoes.

Which would kind of be funny to see him veto it and still blame the Democrats.

yeah, it's not been a fun read but that "unfunness" pales into nothing compared to the experiences of the victims.
