Yes, but Carson has gotten his family involved, which adds another layer beyond mere dollar amount.

Criminals usually hang out with other criminals. But he didn't even hire good criminals. They're all getting caught. Imagine how much more we'd know if we had a Congress that did its Constitutional duty!?

Very few conservatives are in play. This election hinges on the votes of independents in the middle and the size of the turnout by Democrats.

So when the Saudi's murder an innocent man, you shouldn't be shocked by it. And if you are shocked, you simply haven't been paying close enough attention. It's been the behavior of a totalitarian misogynist dictatorship that has been fostered by the US for 80+ years.

Moreover, I'm having a difficult time understanding why it's this event that's really opening eyes for people. The Saudi's just murdered 40 children in Yemen on a bus a couple months ago, but this is the event that's horrific and shocking? I guess it's easier for people to wrap their heads around "accidental" murder of 40 children/11 adults than the straight murder of one man.
There’s quite a few things that have made this story as big as it is, so saying that it's not "shocking" is being incredibly disingenuous.
    1. This Saudi citizen and American permanent resident had become part of the DC in crowd. He wrote for the Washington Post. He has been moving around political circles there, meeting with powerful people of various sorts. When something happens to one of their own, politicians and journalists take close notice.

    2. All the journalists who have been writing favorable puff pieces for Muhammed Bin Salman were 100% willing to write off any faceless Yemenis, Saudis, or any other poor Arabs they would never in their lives meet as 'broken eggs' needed to make MBS' wonderful reform omlette. Naturally being every bit as cowardly as they are ghoulish, this calculus changed when someone in their own professional and social circle was targeted.

For the first time in their lives, editorialists for places like WaPo and WSJ felt a pang of empathy for one of MBS' many many many victims, and were able to see themselves in Khashoggi's shoes. This is why we see so much press coverage of this.

    3. The other journalists who were already skeptical about the relations with Saudi Arabia got to point to this incident as validating their opinion and giving them a chance to share it (and forcing some of the cheerleaders to back away from their support for him).

The war in Yemen has been supported by presidents from both parties, and while criticism of that war did force a tougher than usual vote on blocking arms sales to the Saudis, it's still a war the US actively assists them with, so it's a tricky issue for journalists to wade in on, particularly with the public too obsessed with the Trump show these days for most other things to break through. It's the shocking nature of this incident that helped it break through as much as the 'he was a journalist' angle.

    4. When Senators and media were already taking note of Yemen, such a high profile event as this killing adds fuel to the fire.

    5. His fiance - if he just disappeared this probably would have been a non-story, something that shows up on page 3. But Khashoggi was aware of the danger and told his fiance to go to the authorities if he didn't come out, and she went and did just that. That meant that people started to pay attention while the affair was ongoing-- KSA was caught in the act. The Saudi's ridiculous response, and Turkey's investigation/bugging has kept it in the news.

    6. Turkey has clearly taken affront at an extra judicial killing taking place in Turkey committed by a foreign power so has been unusually open and forthcoming about what they believe took place. If Khashoggi had been silently disappeared in Saudi Arabia it wouldn't be a story that gained any traction, not least because his death wouldn't have been immediately announced and instead he would just be missing

    7. This happened in the consulate. Most journalist murders are plausibly deniable, but you can't get any more state-sanctioned than that without a video of MBS personally executing the dude.

    8. Ambushing and murdering people in embassies or consulates is qualitatively different from bombing another country. The way countries deal with each other follow certain rules, and these rules do accommodate for war but they don't accommodate for what the Saudi did. It's stupid but that’s how it works.

It'd have been less of a story if they had hired some hitmen to murder Khashoggi in his home like the Russians do. But diplomatic real estate is supposed to be some kind of holy ground where you don't commit violent crimes so that the extraterritoriality privileges they are granted don't need to be revoked. They broke an important rule of the game, and no one wants this kind of behavior where this becomes accepted as the new standard because it'd basically be the end of embassies.

    9. Americans aren't the only ones angry about this. France, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands have all canceled political visits to Saudi Arabia until a credible investigation is done regarding this incident.

    10. The global businesses that MBS has been courting have started to distance themselves as a result. JPMorgan, Ford, Uber and others have all canceled their upcoming meetings with the prince.

Sorry, none of your long winded post equates to shocking. Murderous dictator doing murderous dictator stuff.

Maybe to the social ruling elites not to the bottom rung of society getting murdered. That's why this is getting more coverage, because it impacts the ruling class.

Then tell me the last time a murderous dictator had someone killed in a consulate in a country that wasn't their own. I'll wait.

Switching gears to domestic atrocities, the Secretary of State of Georgia, who's running for Governor against a formidable African American woman, has routinely purged the voter rolls of, and I know this will be a shock, African Americans in Georgia. Over 50,000 registrations this month alone have been put on hold with over 70% of those from black residents.

Then he actually put this video out on the official SoS website and youtube. It has since been taken down from youtube but you can still watch it if you look at this tweet.

Indiana which has a tight Senate race did the same thing in purging voters, largely in urban areas with a disproportionate number of african americans relative to the general indiana population.

Pre-meditated murder is pre-meditated murder. Murder is illegal regardless of if it occurs in a consulate/embassay, a government building, or a McDonalds. If a serial killer, came into an embassy and killed someone, I wouldn't be shocked he did so. That's kind of what they do.

By your logic, I guess we shouldn't have been shocked that 9/11 happened because that's just what terrorists do (and had been trying to do for decades).

It's ridiculous that you have been belittling other peoples' reactions by drawing an arbitrary line in the sand. At what point would it be okay for people to talk about Saudi Arabia, then? You'd rather we don't talk about everything wrong with our relationship with Saudi Arabia at all?

Early voting numbers in Georgia appear to be good, though. If these numbers keep up, there's a good shot at the Dems getting a win.

Talk and tweet away all the shock and outrage your little heart desires. Just let me know what the goal is. Do you want to save as many lives as possible? Move away from our dependence on oil? No more killings in consulates? I should be able to come up with some good hashtags.
