It really can’t stop there. I can’t imagine a scenario where a sane person would trust USA Gymnastics with the safety of his or her child.

Nope. They need to purge the entire leadership of USA Gymnastics. Also, the president of Michigan State needs to go.

The U.S. Olympic Committee has been curiously quiet during sentencing of former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar. Right as Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison this afternoon for 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct—and after 156 gymnasts gave statements describing Nassar’s years of abuse—the USOC put out a wide-reaching statement detailing its plans for USA Gymnastics. The most important point is that USOC CEO Scott Blackmun is calling on the entire 21-person USAG board to resign; the three members who resigned on Monday will not be enough of a sacrifice:

    This judge is awesome.

    https://deadspin.com/judge-reads-bat...-na-1822379053

At the final day of Larry Nassar’s sentencing hearing today, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina read excerpts from a letter that Nassar wrote two months after agreeing to plea guilty to 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. In his letter, Nassar came off as defiant and wrote as if he was still somehow innocent, which prompted Aquilina to read it to prove that Nassar had not yet reckoned with what he’d done.

Here are the excerpts she read:

Let me begin: The federal judge went ballistic at sentencing...and spent 10% on the federal case and 90% on state cases...she gave me 60 years instead of 5-20 years. The prosecutor even admitted that I never belonged to any porn sites...was not on the dark web, and also, they could not prove I viewed it. It was all deleted of course. I shared my electronics, and of course, couldn’t prove that.

What I did in the state cases was medical, not sexual, but because of the porn I lost all credibility. So I’m trying to avoid a trial to save the stress to my community, my family...yet look what’s happening. It’s wrong. I was a good doctor, because my treatments worked and those patients that are now speaking out were the same ones that praised and came back over and over. The media convinced them that it was wrong and bad.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. The media is sensationalizing this. The [attorney general’s office] forced me to [plea guilty]. I was so manipulated by the AG, and now Aquilina, and all I wanted was to minimize stress to everyone. The FBI investigated [my Olympic treatments] in 2015 because nothing was wrong. Now they’re seeking the media attention and financial reward.
    She then tore it up.

Dvora Meyers on Deadspin has the good work on Nassar, including naming other coaches and trainers. They should really just abolish USA Gymnastics. It’s that far gone. Some of these girls were 6. One committed suicide.

And fk Bela Karolyi. He’s getting off easy.

France to shut all coal fired power plants by 2021.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...-a8176796.html

Meanwhile here in the USA our President will probably declare at the SOTU that he's going to take all the tax incentives for going solar and allocate them to help those who get a cast iron coal furnace in their house.

Well, France gets a whopping 1% of it's energy from coal, versus like 30% for the US I think. They get 75% of their energy from nuclear, which is the highest % in the world. There is debate about the impacts to people/environment from the small but significant radioactive byproduct from nuclear, which of course stands apart from the real risk of an event like those seen in Russia and Japan from nuclear.

This is an example of what I hate about today's media. Crooners like Hannity are way too far gone to rehabilitate, but lately Cuomo is just shadowing him from the other side of the spectrum.

    https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/...-gaetz-sot.cnn

When he gets folks from the right on his program, he immediately makes it clear he just wants to provoke a fight and try to get them in gotchas. This guy's comment is silly, but why not debate the underlying issue rather than try to provoke and mock a meaningless point in the context of the issue?

We complain about a reality TV president, as we should, but major news networks are becoming Guest Deathmatch reality TV as well. CNN is pimping this as "today's political news" near the top of their webpage. Yawn.

We must have watched two different clips. It looked to me as though Cuomo was trying to bridge his analogy with his point and the guest was unable to do that for good reason. I don't know if they got around to discussing the underlying story, which turned out to be nothing. I think comparing this to what Hannity does is quite a reach.

Eh. That was about one minute at the end of the entire interview. He did debate the underlying issue at length. That Gaetz made a stupid and inaccurate analogy was not a terribly important part. For the most part, I thought Gaetz sounded like a full blown conspiracy theorist when he talked about the actual issue.

Maybe I'm the crazy one but I'm way less concerned with the host using his bully pulpit to point out that his guest can't even get his facts straight about the Immaculate Conception, and how that's a good barometer of Gaetz's attention to detail and general regard for evidence and fact; than I am about one of the two major political parties expounding in D level Infowars conspiracy theories.

This is kind of what I'm talking about. I'm not defending the guest, just think the discussion was silly and counter-productive as it had nothing to do with the underlying point the guest is making about the "missing" text messages. And CNN of course shares that clip as big news on it's front page versus the actual discussion on the merits of the guest's concerns. Which, frankly I share. Just like it's stupid when right-leaning shows do it, it's dumb when left leaning ones do as well. With perhaps the exception of Tapper getting that guy about swearing on the bible. That was good.

Make a stupid guy look stupid. I'll object to their having that guest in the first place - though if they didn't, there would be a chorus of, "Why isn't the liberal media covering this huge story?" (Not from you, obviously.) But once he's on, making the stupid guy look stupid is as useful a thing to do as anything else. In fact, focusing on the "issue" makes it appear that there's actually an issue there worth paying attention to.

In the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal, the United States Olympic Committee has demanded that USA Gymnastics meet six conditions — including the resignation of its entire board by the end of next week — or else face decertification.
And Lou Anna Simon resigned. You got it all.

Courtland Sykes is apparently running for Senate in Missouri in 1955.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.dc9ac0931444

A Republican candidate who hopes to unseat a female Democratic senator in Missouri is drawing criticism for a statement he posted about women’s rights in which he called feminists “she devils” and said that he expected his fiancee to have dinner ready for him every night at 6 p.m.

“I want to come home to a home cooked dinner at six every night, one that she fixes and one that I expect one day to have my daughters learn to fix after they become traditional homemakers and family wives,” he wrote of his fiancee, Chanel Rion, saying he wanted his world to be more Norman Rockwell — the painter known for his depictions of classic American life — than the feminist Gloria Steinem.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Sykes said that he fully supported women and that he didn’t believe his statement was demeaning to them.

“I clearly state that modern women can be anything they want,” he said. “No one is in a position to tell women what they can and can’t do.”

“There are amazing women with amazing careers,” he said. “You take Kellyanne Conway or Sarah Huckabee Sanders. These women absolutely should be celebrated.”

Trump should just go ahead and make it official and change the name to the Executive Protection Agency.

    https://www.apnews.com/646836ad590c4...fuel-interests

The Trump administration announced Thursday it is doing away with a decades-old air emissions policy opposed by fossil fuel companies, a move that environmental groups say will result in more pollution.

The Environmental Protection Agency said it was withdrawing the “once-in always-in” policy under the Clean Air Act, which dictated how major sources of hazardous air pollutants are regulated. Under the EPA’s new interpretation, such “major sources” as coal-fired power plants can be reclassified as “area sources” when their emissions fall below mandated limits, subjecting them to differing standards.

Also, after the Weinstein accusations, the RNC’s official Twitter account suggested that the DNC should return his donations. Presumably, they would apply the same standards here.
