I know there's a thread for POOC, but this is easier.

Anyway, I'm about a quarter through the Teddy Roosevelt biography (vol. 1 of 3).

After giving birth to their first child, his wife died (preceded in death by his mother a mere few hours prior), prompting TR's journal entry to be a giant X and "The light has gone out of my life." Had to call it quits for the night after that.

I downloaded the audiobook a while ago. I also have a copy in a box somewhere. I probably read it first when I was in seventh grade or so, when 1984 was impossibly far in the future.

Heck who needs to read 1984, we are living it.

I seem to remember living through 1984 once before.

True. I just seem less interested in reading a fiction book if it is currently happening. I did read it in high school and that was enough for me.

Same, but I was rather young. Unlike you.

(My copy of the book will arrive tomorrow.)

    You're not alone!

NEW YORK — After incorrect or unprovable statements made by Republican President Donald Trump and some White House aides, one truth is undeniable: Sales of George Orwell's "1984" are soaring.

First published in 1949, Orwell's classic dystopian tale of a society in which facts are distorted and suppressed in a cloud of "newspeak" topped the best-seller list of Amazon.com as of Tuesday evening. The sales bump comes after the Trump administration's assertions his inauguration had record attendance and his unfounded allegation that millions of illegal votes were cast against him last fall.

While purchasing 1984, Amazon recommended that I buy Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World. Perhaps they'll be next. I don't have much time to read these days, but I'll get to them.

I went through Brave New World again on audiobook. Don't bother.

Dang girl. What was on your high school reading list? I thought these were all books that everyone read.

I was never assigned any of those in high school either.

I was out sick all last week and read 5 books by Angela Marsons starting with Silent Scream, a very good British crime series. I highly recommend them. Pure, scary entertainment, if you like that kinda thing.

To tell you the truth, I'm pretty certain I was not assigned Fahrenheit 451, and I don't remember if I was assigned the others. I certainly read them all, though.

    Sorry but Kindle FTW.

I do get the allure of a nice hardcover book, but would rather avoid a public copy that likely has been handled by multiple dirty, poopy, booger, spermy hands.....

This book was more science based than behavioral economics of Freakonomics. He answered questions like "what would happen if the sun turned off" or "if gravity goes away for you and you start rising up 1ft per second, what would you die of?"

If you have Prime you can read it for free.

Yeah, IDK. I wasn't assigned any of them. I read a lot of Shakespeare. (Aside from abnormal psychology, my favorite college class was a Shakespeare elective.) Then again, I went to a Christian (Southern Baptist) high school, so Orwell and Huxley may not have been on their preferred reading list.

No good? I thought Huxley supposedly was one of the greatest 20th century writers.

Thanks for the input on the freebie.
