Yeah, that was wayyy pre-draft. It was not in June when he threw the no-hitter - as I clearly stated in my last post - when Kap's velo first spiked up to 93-96 as opposed to anywhere from 89-92 (early in college) and more so 91-93 later at UCLA. The second significant uptick in velocity came the following year with NYY.

Also, that barren SR you used a support did not even record his slider/changeup, two pitches he's thrown his whole college career. Sort of important to include, don't you think. Talk about questionable accuracy in a scouting report.
3 posters agreed after the Littell start the gun seemed hot in Hartford. Maybe it wasn't? Man Mel, you got me again. I'll just say i believe there observations.

At least the recovery time is a bit faster for a position player than pitcher, but still..Terrible news.

It's only fitting that it's now a complete downpour outside.

And even in an off day, Yankees manage to lose.

Sucks, but as far as catastrophic injuries go, the non-throwing arm for a position player is relatively non-troubling.

He'll be ready to go well before pitchers and catchers report and make the team out of ST next year.

    2 part question:

    1) Will he be ready for AFL?
    2) Is he eligible to play if so?

There's no reason for him to rush him back. Let him focus on ST.

Was gonna ask what other infielders do we know of who have gotten Tommy John and then I remembered that Miguel Sano did in his throwing arm. Zack Cozart did too in his non-throwing arm during a collision at second base.

It's 8-9 months for position players on their throwing arm. Cozart specifically had the surgery in late July of 2011 on his non throwing arm as you said, and he was the opening day shortstop for the Reds in 2012.

Then, in instructs he jumped up and as a pro he began sitting 95-96 and touching 98 (and supposedly as high as 99 at one point). Those are two separate jumps in velocity that are well documented and undeniable.

Kap did not go from throwing 90-93 hitting 94 to sitting 95+ hitting 98. That was over a period of years

I don't think it was a hot gun. I think Art was off base with his initial statements that Justus was struggling to hit 90 over multiple starts.

E: So, um, which is it then:

Mel, I'm not sure what you mean by "I think Art was off base". I was at a Trenton game in April in which Sheffeld got hit hard. The scoreboard had his fastball sitting in the 90/91 range which surprised me because I read reports that he threw harder. As a matter of fact I was so surprised I took a walk behind the plate and sat a few rows behind a couple of scouts with radar guns. Their guns were consistent with the scoreboard, he sat mostly 90/91 on that particular night and he was hit very hard. I don't know what his velocity readings have been since that night, but I'm certain about what I saw. I hope you're not questioning my integrity.

On #1 I would suspect the recovery time to be well past the AFL at this point.

    On #2 I really don't know sorry.

Cashman said was not sure Torres was making it to #Yankees this season. Said bat was ready, but still needed to answer questions at 3b.

It's easy for him to say that now. If he kept hitting like he was in AAA, he would have been called up.

Anyway, I guess this injury buys the team an additional year of control at least.
