Ben Badler: Campero is a good sleeper to watch. Despite that listed height and weight, he is athletic. Has to get better blocking/receiving but he has a strong arm, he controls the strike zone well and it's quality contact when he connects. It's a pretty limited sample both in terms of his performance and scouting history that we have on him relative to his peers, but I could see him taking a leap forward a year from now. Nice pickup by the Yankees for $35,000.
    Woop woop.

God damn! 40 pitches in 5 innings? That's some David Robertson ................. Also, has nobody told Sheff and Abreu that the AFL is heavily slanted in the hitters' favor?

67 pitches...sorry, didn't get much sleep last night for obvious reasons.

Re: 2017 Yankee minor league news and notes..

    Florial: 4-5, SB

    McKinney: 1-4, 2B, 4 RBI

    http://m.mlb.com/news/article/258413...icid=153494546

"He is just talented," Scottsdale manager Jay Bell said. "He's just got a nice, strong, baseball, athletic body and everything just, not to make a play on words, flows. He just does so many good things. He's got the ability to hit the ball out of the park, he hits it all over the field."

In addition to his 50-grade hit tool, the 19-year-old has 60-grade speed, which he promptly put on display as he stole second after leading off the game with a base hit.

Florial, the No. 78 overall prospect, flashed his speed again in the eighth as he beat out an infield single for his fourth hit of the game.

"Hitting is hard and sometimes guys have the ability to make it look easier than it really is and he's one of them," Bell said. "He's still got a lot to learn. He's a 19-year-old kid, who's learning how to compete against better and better talent, and that was one of the things that was nice to watch this year was him going from [Class A] Charleston to [Class A Advanced] Tampa and then to be able to be invited out here."
Billy McKinney, the Yankees' No. 23 prospect, also made an impact with his bat as he drove in four runs, including a bases-clearing double in the eighth. But what impressed Bell most about McKinney's effort was his defense as he was playing first base for the first time since high school.

"Billy did a great job," Bell said of the 23-year-old, who made a diving play in the third inning. "I know Joe [Girardi] is looking for a couple guys who are capable of going out there and playing infield and outfield and Billy fits into that. That's why he's here right now, to play some first base."

    Keith Law article on AFL:

The Yankees also sent several big arms to the AFL, led by lefty Justus Sheffield, who is making up for innings he lost during the season to an oblique injury. Sheffield was absolutely filthy in his AFL debut, sitting 94-96 with a plus slider at 86-87 and above-average changeup at 86-89, better at the 86-87 part of that range. He's always been athletic with a good delivery that's online to the plate, but now his arm looks faster than ever, and he has a real breaking ball in the slider -- he didn't throw a curveball at all. He was on my top 100 last winter on the promise of his athleticism and changeup, but now he's got more fastball and a potential out pitch in the slider.

Right-hander Albert Abreu came over from Houston in the Brian McCann trade and started on Wednesday for Scottsdale, also working at 94-96 and showing promise with both a low-80s power curveball and an action changeup at 83-86. He's a bit of a short-armer, but stays online to the plate; I don't think he really repeats the arm action, and I could see him turn the changeup over at release, which might tip off hitters. There are the elements of a good starter here if he can get to average-ish command, which may require smoothing out the arm swing.

Yankees outfielder Estevan Florial is one of the youngest players in the AFL at age 19, and it has showed so far this week in his at-bats. He can certainly turn on a fastball, squaring up 93, 94, and 95 in different at-bats for singles, and he ran 3.93 (70 speed) on an infield single. He's also swung and missed at almost every off-speed pitch I've seen him get this week, punching out twice on curveballs, and has struck out on fastballs away after seeing off-speed stuff. Recognizing pitch types is going to be the key for him -- he has four tools, but the one that matters most isn't here yet.

Dominican Winter League starts tonight. Eduardo Rivera is on the Aguilas Cibaenas roster and there are no Yankees on the Tigres Del Licey roster as of right now.

They do have a service to watch the games live for $35. Worth it if miss live games during the winter.

    1. Justus Sheffield, LHP, Yankees

    Team: Scottsdale
    Age: 21
    Why Hes Here: 1-0, 0.00, 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO

The Scoop: Two of the players the Yankees acquired in the Andrew Miller trade last summer have made the major leagues. Sheffield could be next. The lefthander missed a chunk of time this summer with an oblique injury and is making up lost innings in the AFL. In his debut, Sheffield was brilliant. He allowed one hit over five shutout innings with six strikeouts to boot. All of his three pitches were on point in his outing, including a fastball that touched 97 mph and a slider and changeup in the mid-to-high-80s that got swings and misses. (JN)
