I'd rank Kap over Sheffield, too. Gardner should absolutely net us another top-100 prospect.

    Trade Ellsbury. Keep Gardner.

Yeesh, those are some ugly numbers from everyone except Adonis Rosa. A lot of those guys seeem like non-prospects, but I'd expect more from Mateo, Polo, and Montgomery at least.

Rosa is yet another guy that gets burried in this extremely deep SP core in the minors, but he put together quite an impressive 2016. Between A and low A, over 78 IP, he put together 8.4 k/9, 1.7 bb/9, 1.000 WHIP, 2.86 ERA. Not bad for his 21 year old season, but I haven't heard too much about him. Do you think he has a high enough ceiling to be considered a real prospect?

Rosa is on the smaller side for a pitch, standing at 6-foot 1-inch and weighing in at 160 pounds. The Dominican Republic-native is armed with a fastball that is usually in the low-90s with excellent control. His strikeout pitch is an above-average changeup that he can use to paint the zone, and he compliments it with a curveball. He has good control of all three of his pitches and has no problem repeating his delivery.

The reason Rosa doesn’t get more love from prospect evaluators is his small stature and somewhat generic repertoire. Listed at 6’1 160 lbs, Rosa will likely need to add some muscle if his body is to stand up to the rigors of a full season as a starter. Thus far, his heaviest workload has been the 78 frames he threw this season. The lack of height also limits his ceiling in the eyes of many scouts.

While Rosa doesn’t have any plus offerings, he does have excellent control and never walks anyone. He mixes his three pitches well. His fastball and change already look like MLB-quality offerings and he’s also made great strides with a curve this year.

Really looking forward to seeing Ambergey in Trenton this year. He has tools but lets see if they are real. Some injuries set him back last year.

Rosa was a relatively unknown coming to the US. Usually, unless these guys are hyped up during the signing period it takes a year or two for us to really get a feel for the prospect. I see him as a solid back-end of the rotation guy. If he gets a velocity bump he might move to a mid-rotation guy.

Well to be fair Amburgey will be in AA at 22 years old while Medchill was just starting his career at 22.

Thanks. The numbers are certainly very good, and it's nice to see him dominating in winter league ball. I like what I hear that he has three solid pitcches with the FB, changeup, curveball mix. But it will be tough to move up through such a crowded system.

Same here. I was very impressed with his "rookie" season in the Systems, the year he was drafted.

and this column on the catching depth in the system

Also, check out the profile of Mandy Alvarez we put out yesterday

Alvarez is my personal favorite out of the last draft class.

Why don't more teams insist on seeing players hit against live pitching prior to signing?

They do, scouts see them play in college/high school games as well as in the summer college leagues. In addition the teams always invite their top potential picks to a workout where they face each other in front of the entire scouting department.

Then I guess I would question their efficacy. Our 2014 IFA haul has produced a LOT of players that have very poor approaches at the plate.

IFA is different, they are pretty much marketed by their trainers but don't see as much real game action as American-born players. One of the reasons the Dominican Prospect League was created but it is still a crap shoot.

As for their approach at the plate, international players are known to be more free swingers in general.

That's more what I was referring to in relation to the Dermis Garcia article. Apologize for being unclear.

I would insist on seeing these guys hit live pitching prior to signing.

Gotta remember when it comes to international guys you are scouting 14, 15, and 16-year-old kids. It isn't an exact science. You can go back and look at some of the bigger IFA guys, and you find a few that have the same issue as Dermis. And the issue you brought is the reason the DPL was created, which is still relatively new.

I hear you and have often wondered how much "live" game action the Yankees and other teams saw of these kids before plunking down 6 or 7 figure bonuses on these 16 year olds. But I think the little they do see, they hope the skills can be brought out with solid coaching.

You are right about several of the kids from 2014/2015 though. Seemingly no clue at the plate - just going up there hacking away.

Looking forward to it. It is very early in the careers of these kids, and most have been state-side less than 2 years. So the "social' adjustments come into play for them as well.

Yep, the column pretty much goes into how it is too early to really judge them and also gives a full list of them.
