Some people can smile or laugh when they're uncomfortable or upset. All kinds of ways of coping. It could just be that. This is such random, awful news.

Jose Fernandez’s story: From saving mom’s life to electric fastballs
    By Joel Sherman

It is gut-wrenching to a sport, an organization and, really, for us all. Fernandez was not just a great pitcher. He was – sorry for this word – lively. His every pitch, movement came with animation. Fernandez’s love for the game and competition was there in every offering.

To watch him was to see a young master of the craft – not just dynamic fastball, but sliders and changeups that would dazzle and baffle. But also in his every movement, there was a passionate showman embracing the game, the attention, the theatrics of it all.

Jose Fernandez and his girlfriend were expecting a child. This is even more tragic by the minute.

Sad week. First Y. Solarte's young wife. Now Fernandez.

Condolences to the other two friends of Jose as well. They get barely a mention.

Thoughts to their loved ones as well.

Also, a bit crazy to be speeding around the ocean in the middle of the night. They paid the ultimate price.

Worst day for baseball in a long, long time. Tavares, Lidle, and Adenhart stung, but this is Munson and Clemente territory.

    What a loss.

Most prolific death in sports in a very long time I think. Taveras' death was terrible, but he was also drinking and driving so I have a hard time comparing the two -- still tragic as hell. They should and probably will retire his number.

Quite frankly, that is precisely what I pondered as soon as I heard the details. What in the world were the three of them thinking? The reports seem to indicate that they were traveling at full speed. In the middle of the pitch black night. WHY????

Dee Gordon's comments lead me to believe that this was a regular thing because they went night fishing.

In all fairness, I seriously doubt that life jackets would have made a difference. By all accounts, the deaths were caused by the impact of the crash and not by drowning.

Like Odin and Crews, except they were on a lake and hit a dock.
