Re: 2016-17 NHL Hockey Season Thread

Meanwhile in the 2017 IIHF World Championships, Canada has to wait another year for their 27th IIHF World Championship Gold Medal.

Sweden wins their 10th IIHF World Championship Gold Medal after outlasting the mighty Canadians 2-0 in a shootout after a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime.

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman helped the Swedes draw first blood before the second period ended with a shorthanded goal to give Sweden a 1-0 lead.

But Canada responded early in the third period on the power play as Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O'Reilly tied the game at 1-1 and forced overtime.

Both goalies didn't give an inch during regulation and overtime.

Colorado Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard had 40 saves in a losing effort while New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist had 42.

The Gold Medal Game went into a shootout.

Pickard saved William Nylander while Lundqvist stoned Nate MacKinnon as both teams failed to score in Round 1.

Nicklas Backstrom beat Pickard to start Round 2 and Lundqvist made his second save as he stopped Brayden Point.

In Round 3, Oliver Ekman-Larsson gave Sweden a 2-0 cushion and O'Reilly was denied by Lundqvist.

In Round 4, Gabriel Landeskog hit the crossbar that could've sealed Sweden's win, but Lundqvist sealed the win with his fourth save in the shootout stuffing Mitch Marner.

With the 2017 IIHF World Championship Gold Medal, Lundqvist completed two-thirds of the Triple Gold Club set to go along with his 2006 Winter Olympic Gold Medal. The only thing missing is a Stanley Cup.

As for the bronze medal, Russia defeated Finland 5-3.

SKA Saint Petersburg forward Nikita Gusev led the way with a goal and two assists.

Chicago Blackhawks winger Artemi Panarin had an assist in the bronze medal game to finish his 2017 IIHF World Championship tournament with 17 points.

It's not quite the embrace many of us hoped for, but Henrik Lundqvist got some love from teammate William Nylander after making the final save.

Meanwhile in the 2017 AHL Calder Cup playoffs, both Conference Finals series are tied at 1-1 after the first two games.

In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Syracuse Crunch and the Providence Bruins split the first two games inside Dunkin Donuts Center.

The Crunch doubled up the Bruins 6-3 in Game 1 as six different Crunch players scored a goal and Mike McKenna had 33 saves.

In Game 2, the Tampa Bay Lighting AHL affiliate drew first blood as Ben Thomas scored 1:26 into the game. However, Jordan Szwarz scored twice to lead the Boston Bruins top minor league club to a Game 2 victory.

Szwarz tied the game at 1-1 at 16:47 of the second period on the power play and scored the winner at 8:28 of the first overtime period as the Eastern Conference Finals series is tied at 1-1 heading into Syracuse's Oncenter War Memorial Arena.

In the Western Conference Finals, the San Jose Barracuda and Grand Rapids Griffins are tied at 1-1.

The Detroit Red Wings top minor league team won the special teams battle in Game 1 as they scored the only power play goal and killed all six Barracuda penalties en route to a 3-1 victory.

However, the San Jose Sharks top minor league squad grabbed their first ever Conference Finals win after scoring three goals with the man-advantage as the Cuda took Game 2, 4-2.

Barracuda forward Ryan Carpenter was a factor in one of the three Cuda power play tallies as he leads all players in the Calder Cup playoffs with eight goals and 16 points.

The next three games are inside Grand Rapid's Van Andel Arena from May 24-27.

Re: 2016-17 NHL Hockey Season Thread

    Bridgestone Arena has erupted!

The Nashville Predators are going to the Stanley Cup Finals!

Peter Laviolette takes his third different team to the Stanley Cup Finals as they win the Western Conference Championship series 4-2 after a 6-3 victory in Game 6 over the Anaheim Ducks.

For the Preds, they became the third #8 seed in NHL Stanley Cup Playoff history to reach the Stanley Cup Finals after the 2006 Edmonton Oilers who lost Game 7 of that Stanley Cup Finals to the Carolina Hurricanes and the 2012 Los Angeles Kings who won the Stanley Cup in six games over the New Jersey Devils.

For Laviolette, it will be his third Stanley Cup Finals appearance as head coach after winning the Cup with the Hurricanes and a Stanley Cup runner-up in 2010 after losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. Dick Irvin, Scotty Bowman and Mike Keenan were the other coaches who took three or more different teams to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Randy Caryle and the Ducks came into Game 6 banged up when goalie John Gibson and forward Rickard Rakell were ruled out for Game 5 due to lower-body injuries.

Jonathan Bernier struggled in the first period as Nashville tucked home two goals to grab a 2-0 lead in the first period.

With Ryan Johansen out for the playoffs with a thigh injury and their captain Mike Fisher banged up, Austin Watson and Colton Sissons stepped up as Watson gave Nashville a 1-0 lead 1:21 into the game and Sissons made it 2-0 Preds at 8:47 of the first period.

Remember the name Sissons later on.

It got even worse for the Ducks as Nick Ritchie received a game-misconduct for five-minute boarding penalty on Viktor Arvidsson. The Ducks killed the penalty though.

Anaheim refused to quit though as they had a 25-8 edge in shots on goal through the first two periods and cut Nashville's lead to 2-1 heading into the third period when Ondrej Kase struck at 4:45 of the second period.

Sissons made the Ducks miserable again with his second goal of the game three minutes into the third period as the Preds led 3-1.

But the Ducks gained momentum scoring the next two goals of the game to make it a 3-3 tie.

Chris Wagner struck at 5:00 and the Ducks leveled the scores at 3-3 at 8:52 through Cam Fowler.

However, it was Sissons again who was a thorn in the Duck's side after completing his hat-trick at 14:00 to give Nashville a 4-3 lead.

Filip Forsberg and Watson's second goal, both empty netters, helped the Predators fans dance in the streets of the Music City as the Predators book their first ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance in franchise history.

For Predators executive of hockey operations and general manager David Poile, it is his first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in his NHL executive since he started as an assistant general manager with the Atlanta/Calgary Flames in 1977.

The Predators will await the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators in the Stanley Cup Finals starting on Memorial Day on the road.

As if they weren't before but you know the league and NBC is pulling for Pittsburgh now. They want no part of a Nashville/Ottawa final.

There will be a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference Finals!

The Ottawa Senators forced a winner-take-all Game 7 inside Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena on Thursday after a 2-1 win in Game 6 over the Pittsburgh Penguins to knot the Eastern Conference Finals series at three games a piece.

After a scoreless first period, it looked the Pittsburgh Penguins scored the opener in Game 6 when Trevor Daley whacked the puck in, but Ottawa Senators head coach Guy Boucher challenged the call where he thought Daley interfered with Sens goalie Craig Anderson.

The situation room in Toronto agreed. No goal for Daley and the Pens for goalie interference.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEIs042LDx4

However, Evgeni Malkin made sure Pittsburgh scored first in Game 6 with his seventh of the playoffs at 4:51 of the second period to give the Pens a 1-0 lead.

But Ottawa equalized on a 5-on-3 power play.

After the Pens were called for two penalties from Ron Hainsey for interference on Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Ian Cole high-sticking Kyle Turris, Bobby Ryan made the Pens pay with a one-timer past Matt Murray at 13:51 to tie the game at 1-1.

Ryan's 5-on-3 tally broke a 0 for 29 power play slump for the Sens.

The Sens drew first blood and grabbed their first lead of Game 6 early in the third period when Mike Hoffman unleashed a bomb off the post for his sixth goal of the playoffs at 1:34 of the third period as Ottawa led 2-1.

From that point on, it was Craig Anderson who had a magnificent Game 6 which gave Canada's last hope to live for a Game 7 on Thursday with 45 saves.

Game 7 will be at the 'Burgh on Thursday with the winner hosting Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Western Conference champion Nashville Predators on Memorial Day Monday.

Pretty impressed with Ottawa bouncing back from that drubbing in game 5. It'd be pretty sweet if they have one more in them.

That's why I posted it as idiot owners. Not Milbury's fault for a change. And Peter did a good job as Islanders head coach. Islanders reached the playoffs both seasons he was the coach almost beating the Leafs his first year.

Re: 2016-17 NHL Hockey Season Thread

With one Game 7 in a Conference Final on the Horizon, it's time to pick out who needs to show me something in tonight's Game 7 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Ottawa Senators from PPG Paints Arena.

    Ottawa Senators: The team
Why? Well, the Sens have yet to win a Game 7 in franchise history since they are 0-5. Craig Anderson needs to be the Anderson of Game 6 who had had 45 saves and not the Anderson who was pulled during the 7-0 vaporizing in Game 5.

Bobby Ryan and Erik Karlsson are also key players especially on the power play where Ryan scored a key 5-on-3 tally in Game 6 after going 29 straight opportunities without scoring one.

    Pittsburgh Penguins: Matt Cullen
Why? With Justin Williams seeing his Game 7 winning streak snapped at seven, thanks to the Penguins, his former 2006 Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup winning teammate Matt Cullen is 6-0 in Game 7s in his playoff career.

He may not have the scoring prowess of Williams, but Cullen is one of the Pens' key face-off men.

While the Sens have nothing to lose, all the pressure is on the Penguins to win tonight.
