Columbus (that Columbus!) has won 14 straight games. Bravo to them!

1st place in the Metro with 3 games in hand too. Damn.

They only have 5 regulation losses this season.

Tomorrow night they play in Minnesota against the Wild who are riding a 12 game winning streak. What a way to end the year.

    Cool story.

Ten years ago Miles Wood sent Ovechkin a hockey card to sign with a note saying that if he didn't sign it Wood would check him the first chance he gets when he made the NHL. Wood's Devils played the Caps the other night.

Wood didn't really play against Ovi's line (that'd be poor coaching) but after the game Ovi hand delivered a signed photo.

A great day for hockey on New Year's Day 2017 as the Toronto Maple Leafs square off against the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Centennial Classic from Toronto's BMO Field on NBC and Sportsnet Canada and TVA Sports at 3 PM ET/12 PM PT.

It's a game that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the start of the National Hockey League.

It's the second of four NHL Outdoor Games this season as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 in the 2016 Heritage Classic back on October 23, 2016 inside Winnipeg's Investors Group Field.

Tomorrow on January 2, the NHL Outdoor Game travels to St. Louis' Busch Stadium III as the St. Louis Blues' take on their fellow Midwest foe Chicago Blackhawks.

The game in St. Louis will be the Blackhawks' fifth outdoor game while the Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins each have the second most with four.

Two outdoor hockey games start 2017 with a bang.

Inside Toronto's BMO Field, the Toronto Maple Leafs take the NHL Centennial Classic with a 4-3 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Auston Matthews scored two goals including the game-winner at 3:40 in overtime.

Detroit Red Wing Anthony Mantha had two goals and assist in a losing effort including his game-tying goal with two seconds left in the third period that made it 4-4.

In the alumni game, the Red Wing alums edged the Maple Leaf alums despite some chippiness.

In the 2017 NHL Winter Classic from St. Louis' Busch Stadium III, the St. Louis Blues used two Vladimir Tarasenko goals in the third period to pull away from their Midwest foe Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.

Chalk up another IIHF World Junior Championship Gold Medal for the United States in the 2010s decade.

Bob Motzko's squad upset the mighty Canadians inside Montreal's Bell Centre 5-4 in a shootout as the Americans grabbed their third World Juniors Gold Medal in the 2010s decade and tying with Finland for third most in World Juniors Gold Medals with four overall.

Anaheim Ducks prospect forward Troy Terry, who scored a shootout hat-trick against Russia in the semifinals, scored the only goal in the shootout that stunned the Canadian crowd.

Calgary Flames prospect goalie Tyler Parsons stoned Carolina Hurricanes Nicolas Roy to send the U.S. men's juniors team into a frenzy.

Such a dumb way to end an incredible game.

Congrats to Team USA, but I wish they could've just won in overtime instead.

Great game by team USA; but I seriously, seriously hate freaking shootouts to end games like this. Can't believe Canada lost, two goal lead, twice. Incredible. Poor defensive positioning makes goaltenders look bad, but would have expected more from the Canadian G.

Great WJC final. One of the best games you'll ever see.

Love the shootout. Just as intense as overtime.

USA deserved gold beating Canada twice in their own backyard.

With regards to the shootout, I hear some people aren't in favor of it.

The Gold Medal game could do a 4v4 or 3v3 instead of 5v5.

I personally would have the team with the best tournament record win gold in case the final
ended in a tie. In this case, team USA would win gold. They were undefeated, would have
beat Russia twice, and beat and tied Canada.

Canada would know that they could not afford to tie in the Gold Medal final, and the intensity would have been incredible at the end of that game knowing that they could not afford a tie.

I hate any tournament being decided by a "Skills Competition". At some point the NHL will decide to do it in their playoffs.

Re: 2016-17 NHL Hockey Season Thread

    ^Doubtful.

The all IIHF GMG's should just keep going until someone scores if they're tied after regulation. Ending a championship game in a skills comp really cheapens the game itself and ending in a tie and using round robin results to determine the winner is even worse.

OT used to be 4v4 though, going 5v5 is dumb.

The Blues, who currently hold a wild card spot, fired Ken Hitchcock this morning. He was due to retire at the end of the season, but they pushed it up a few months. Mike Yeo is now their head coach.
