    2016 Brett Gardner thread

Doesn't have his own thread yet?

Well, that was a refreshing turn of events.

You guys know this guy by now. When he's hot, he looks like the best player in baseball. When he's not, he looks like Chase Headley. Sooooo streaky.

Love Brett. One of the few guys I actually like on this team. Just hope he doesn't completely crash in 2nd half.

He's batting seventh tonight, which is the first time since 2014 that he started a game batting third or later.

If he has value at the deadline, by all means, trade him.

Teams are probably looking for guys who don't turn into pumpkins in the second half.

I'm sure if the Yanks made Gardner available there would be plenty of interest. I'd have no problem dealing Gardner if the return was right but he's not someone to unload just for the sake of unloading them for whatever they can get like a number of other players in the current roster who have been discussed at length in other threads so I won't rehash here.

Gardner is one of the first players I'd deal if the deal was right. Although I like him, I don't consider him an ideal top of the order hitter which unfortunately is his job. His OBP is always pretty average to be honest, he's not much of a table setter any more, and he doesn't steal that many bases. Between him and Ellsbury, who's untradeable, top of the order is one area flawed enough that there's no reason not to trade Gardy if it helps to start reconstructing this team.

second highest OBP on the team so far in 2016, 3rd highest in 2015, second highest in 2014, second highest in 2013...

Anyways, we should trade him to a team that will give us fair value for him, like Yankee Tripper says. Only 36 games into the season and he's already clocked 1 fWAR. On pace for a 4.5 WAR season

Compared to the rest of the team, not bad. But his .327 in 2014 isn't very impressive for a top of the order guy, and his .340s in '13 and '15 are decent enough to give him some trade value, but not much of a kickstarter for this lineup. All I'm saying is he might be one of those pieces we can get something back for, and losing him at the top of the order isn't really going to kill us.

Especially if they can get another arm for the bullpen.

    You need to recalibrate "average."

2015's leadoff hitters averaged 0.328 obp, no. 2 averaged 0.317 OBP.

That "average" is pretty pedestrian for a leadoff hitter. The more elite are batting close to that, and taking walks on top of it. All I'm saying is Gardner's not been very dynamic at the top of the order, would you not agree?

He's got a .377 OBP at the moment. That puts his OBP tied for 10th (Miguel Cabrera) in the AL.

Actually, I'm glad he's doing well at the moment with his recent hot streak. But that second half last year and almost all of this season so far until this streak has been brutal. He's someone I would consider dealing while his numbers are up.
