Re: 2016 NCAA Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

We are going to overtime inside Knoxville's Neyland Stadium.

#9 ranked Tennessee in a deadlock against upset-minded Appalachian State 13-13.

The Appy St. Mountaineers took a 7-3 lead after the first quarter when Taylor Lamb scored a five-yard touchdown run before Aaron Medley booted a 23-yard field goal to get the Volunteers on the board.

The Mountaineers took a 13-3 lead into halftime when Lamb connected on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Cox. However, Michael Rubino missed the extra point.

Medley's second field goal of the game from 39 yards out were the only points in the third as Tennessee trailed 13-6 after three quarters.

Joshua Dobbs helped Tennessee forced overtime with a 67-yard strike to Josh Malone to make it 13-13.

Rubino missed a 42-yard field goal in regulation as well.

Tennessee has two turnovers to Appalachian State's one.

Overtime - Appalachian State vs. #9 Tennessee

    Tennessee gets the ball first.

    First Overtime
TENN: Jalen Hurd touchdown off a Joshua Dobbs fumble. Aaron Medley XP is good.
    APPST: Turnover on downs.

Tennessee beats Appalachian State 20-13 in the First Overtime Period!

Butch Jones survived a scare as the #9 ranked Tennessee Volunteers outlast a gamed Appalachian State Mountaineers team 20-13 in overtime.

Jalen Hurd recovered a fumble in the end zone after Joshua Dobbs tried to jump and extend the ball over the goal line for the only touchdown in overtime.
    http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17445422

The Mountaineers had a 13-3 lead at halftime where it could've been a 14-3 lead and a 14-13 win had Michael Rubino made the extra point after Taylor Lamb connected on a 33-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Cox.

This game could've been another Top 10 scalp for the Mountaineers after their 2007 shocker in the Big House against then #5 ranked Michigan Wolverines.

However, Tennessee's defense applied the clamps despite the ejection of Jalen Reeves-Maybin for targeting to grab the win as the Vols survived by the skin of their teeth.

Christian McCaffrey start off his Heisman Trophy campaign with two touchdowns as #8 ranked Stanford Cardinal pulled away late against a gamed Kansas State Wildcats squad 26-13.

McCaffrey had 210 all-purpose yards including 166 on offense and two rushing touchdowns.

The Stanford defense had to come up big and they did with seven sacks on K-State QB Jesse Ertz and had two interceptions. The Cardinal had eight sacks overall.

Ertz had 207 yards passing on 16/34 completions with a touchdown and interception, but had to leave the game in the third quarter with a leg injury.

Another team that had to pull away late was #12 ranked Michigan State Spartans after a 28-13 win over the Furman Paladins.

Spartans QB Tyler O'Connor had 190 yards passing and three touchdown throws with a pick.

Spartans RB LJ Scott added 105 yards and a score on 21 carries.

Jim Grobe had a successful start in his interim stint with the Baylor Bears as the #23 ranked team in the nation walloped the Northwestern State Demons 55-7.

Bears QB Seth Russell had 163 yards through the air and four touchdown passes and Terrence Williams added 72 yards on the ground and two majors on 11 carries.

Brooks Haack prevented the shutout for the Demons with a three-yard touchdown run with 1:30 to go in the fourth quarter.

Two Top 5 ranked teams bite the dust in Week 1.

First it was the #15 ranked Houston Cougars upsetting the #3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners inside Houston's NRG Stadium.

And in legendary Lambeau Field, the Wisconsin Badgers tripped up the #5 ranked LSU Tigers.

In Houston's NRG Stadium, Tom Herdman and the #15 ranked Houston Cougars threw a monkey wrench in Bob Stoops and the #3 ranked Oklahoma Sooners College Football Playoff plans with a 33-23 scalp.

It is the second win against a Top 10 opponent for Houston under Herdman. The first was against #9 ranked Florida State in the Chik-Fil-A Peach Bowl back on New Years Eve 2015.

The Sooners took a 10-3 lead after one quarter when Joe Mixon gored through the Cougars defense for a 32-yard touchdown run.

But Houston outscored Oklahoma 16-7 in the second quarter to take a 19-17 lead.

Houston kicker Ty Cummings kicked four field goals in the first half and Houston QB Greg Ward Jr. delivered a 15-yard touchdown pass to Duke Catalon.

Houston extended their lead to 16 heading into the fourth quarter, 33-17 thanks to a 100-yard kick-six from Brandon Wilson and Ward Jr.'s second touchdown pass of the game from Tyler McCloskey.

Wilson's 100-yard missed field goal score was a critical play in the game.
    http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17456389

Baker Mayfield tried to get Oklahoma back in the game when he threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars held the Sooners offense at bay with six points.

Mayfield had 323 passing yards and two scores, but the Cougar defense neutralized the Sooners in the second half with two takeaways and two sacks.

Ward Jr. had 321 passing yards and two scores.

Meanwhile in Lambeau Field, the Wisconsin Badgers put a dent in the #5 ranked Louisiana State Tigers armor after a 16-14 upset.

The Badgers once led 13-0 with midway through the third quarter after two field goals from Rafael Gaglianone gave Wisconsin a 6-0 halftime lead and Corey Clement went up the middle for a five-yard touchdown run.

Clement had 86 yards and a score off 21 carries.

But Les Miles' Tigers won't quit.

Tre'Davious White picked off Badgers QB Bart Houston with a 21-yard pick-six to get LSU on the board and LSU QB Brandon Harris connected with Travin Dural for a 10-yard touchdown pass that give the Tigers a 14-13 lead heading into the fourth.

However, both teams were sloppy with the ball with three turnovers each.

Gaglianone's third field goal of the game from 47 yards out were the only points in the fourth.

LSU RB Leonard Fournette had 138 yards on 23 carries, but had to leave the game with a banged up ankle.
    http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17459124

On the next play, Harris threw a game-ending pick to D'Cota Dixon. LSU OL Josh Boutte was ejected for his cheap shot on Dixon following the pick.

The #6 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and the #7 ranked Michigan Wolverines start off their 2016 campaigns with thumping wins.

Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines destroyed the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 63-3 inside the Big House.

Michigan QB Wilton Speight started the rout with 145 passing yards and three scores.

Chris Evans added 112 yards and two big scampers on the ground off eight carries.

The Michigan defense also added two pick-sixes from Delano Hill and Channing Stribling.

Meanwhile in the Horseshoe, Urban Meyer saw the Buckeyes throttled the Bowling Green Falcons 77-10.

After allowing a Brandon Harris 63-yard pick-six, Buckeyes QB J.T. Barrett took over with 349 yards passing and six touchdowns, two to Curtis Samuel. Barrett had 379 yards on the day with seven total offensive scores.

Samuel added 261 yards from scrimmage and had three scores overall.

Chris Petersen and the #14 ranked Washington Huskies whipped the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 48-13 inside Husky Stadium.

Jake Browning had 287 passing yards and three scores, two to John Ross who also caught five balls for 90 yards. Ross added a 92-yard kickoff return to his stat total.

Dante Pettis added a 68-yard punt return to the house to complete the rout.

The Mason Rudolph to Jhajuan Seales worked twice for Mike Gundy and the #21 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys in a 61-7 vaporizing on the Southeast Louisiana Lions.

The Cowboys defense also dominated with four fumble recoveries, two of them scoop-and-sixes from Madre Harper and Ramon Richards.

The #17 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Miami (OH) Redhawks 45-21.

Akrum Wadley led the Hawkeye rushing attack with 121 yards and two majors off 12 carries while LeShun Daniels Jr. added 83 yards and two scores off 10 carries.

Redhawks QB Billy Bahl had 266 yards passing and two touchdown throws to James Gardner in a losing effort.

After blowing a 24-9 lead, the Texas A&M Aggies needed overtime to upset the #16 ranked California-Los Angeles Bruins 31-24.

Texas A&M led 24-9 after three quarters thanks to Trevor Knight scoring a one-yard punch and throwing a 40-yard touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds.

Despite being sacked five times and throwing three interceptions, UCLA QB Josh Rosen and his fellow Bruins weren't going to quit in the fourth quarter as they forced overtime.

Bolu Olorunfunmi scored a nine-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to eight with 3:25 left and Rosen threw a 62-yard pass to Kenneth Walker III and convert the two points when Rosen threw to Austin Roberts to tie the game at 24-24.

UCLA had a chance to take the lead very late in the fourth, but Rosen threw his third pick of the game.

Texas A&M had a chance to win the game as well, but they turn the ball over on downs to force overtime.

In the first overtime, Knight scored a one-yard touchdown run on fourth and goal to give A&M a 31-24 lead.

UCLA needed to score to force Double Overtime, but failed to score from five yards out as Kevin Sumlin's men survives.

Ducks QB Dakota Prukop had 271 yards through the air on 21/30 passing with three touchdowns and also added 36 yards rushing and a score.

Royce Freeman added 87 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

The Ducks have to take better care of the football as they lost two fumbles.

UC Davis Aggies RB Manusamoa Luuga had 147 total offensive yards and a rushing hat-trick in a losing effort.

Nick Chubb enjoyed a successful return to the gridiron.

After ending his year with a devastating knee injury, new Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart wanted to test the Bulldogs running back and Chubb delivered with 222 rushing yards and two scores on 32 carries as the #18 ranked team in the nation pulled away from #22 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 33-24.

It wasn't smooth sailing for Kirby though as the Bulldogs once trailed 24-14 with under two minutes to go in the third quarter with Tar Heels running back T.J. Logan causing havoc with a 95-yard kickoff return score and a 21-yard touchdown run.

But Kirby took Greyson Lambert out of the game and inserted Jacob Eason. The move paid off when Eason connected with Isaiah McKenzie for a 17-yard connection and the Bulldogs added a safety to close out the third as UGA trailed by one point, 24-23.

William Ham gave Georgia their first lead since leading 7-0 after one quarter with a 29-yard field goal, 26-24.

And Chubb broke the game open with a 55-yard burst into the end zone.

The Georgia defense stiffened up with four sacks as Kirby has a winning start to his Georgia head coaching career.

Meanwhile, Georgia's World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party rival, the #25 ranked Florida Gators also had a winning start to their 2016 campaign after pulling away from the Massachusetts Minutemen 24-7 in the Swamp as they honor their former coach, Ol' Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier.

Gators QB Luke Del Rio threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and Eddy Pineiro kicked three 40+ yard field goals in an sloppy with where they allowed four sacks and had eight penalties for 80 yards.

The #1 ranked team in the nation and defending National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide start off their 2016 campaign with a 52-6 rout over #20 ranked Southern California Trojans.

USC led 3-0 after one quarter thanks to a Matt Boermeester 47-yard field goal.

However, it was Roll Tide Roll from there.

Crimson Tide QB Jalen Hurts had 150 yards of total offense and four overall offensive majors two on the ground and two touchdown passes to ArDarius Stewart.

The Alabama defense allowed 194 yards and had a pick-six from Marlon Humphrey.

USC's loss completed a bad Week 1 for both Los Angeles area schools as they went 0-2 and Pat Haden looks like he regrets taking the interim tag out of Clay Helton who is know 0-3 since being named the permanent head coach.

Meanwhile, #2 ranked Clemson Tigers withstood a late charge from the Auburn Tigers and escaped Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 19-13 victory.

Clemson Tigers QB Deshaun Watson had 248 yards passing and a touchdown and one interception.

Wayne Gallman added 123 yards and a score off 30 carries.

Gus Malzahn's Tigers used three quarterbacks to jumpstart the offense, but Sean White and Jeremy Johnson combined for no touchdowns and two picks.

Kerryon Johnson scored Auburn's only touchdown with a nine-yard scamper with 3:35 to go in the fourth as both defenses forced two turnovers.

However, Clemson had the better defense as Auburn's offense went 3/17 on third-down conversions as Dabo Swinney's men grabbed the win.

TCU QB Kenny Hill had 484 yards of total offense and had five total touchdowns including a rushing hat-trick and 439 passing yards despite throwing two picks.

Jackrabbits QB Taryn Christion had 333 passing yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort, but the TCU defense had three sacks on Christion.

Re: 2016 NCAA Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

Tal Hawkins, AustinTXHorn and the Texas Longhorn fans in this board are going berserk after their scalp.

Texas true freshman QB Shane Buechele gave the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defense fits after gaining 313 yards of total offense and three total touchdowns including 280 through the air and two touchdown passes despite throwing a pick. John Burt caught one of them to go along with six grabs for 111 yards.

By Buechele's side, Tyrone Swoopes also gave the Irish problems with 53 rushing yards and a rushing hat-trick.

However, the Irish refused to quit.

DeShone Kizer had 292 yards of total offense and had six total touchdowns including five passing. Two of the Kizer five touchdown passes were to Equanimeous St. Brown.

The Irish did saw a player leave the game though when Torii Hunter Jr. had to leave the game before the end of the third quarter after a controversial hit above the neck area and sandwich in the end zone.
    http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17467427

Both teams made special teams plays in the game to force overtime.

The Texas special teams blocked Justin Yoon's 36-yard field goal attempt that could've tied the game at 31-31 in the third quarter.

But Notre Dame forced overtime with a big special teams play of their own.

After D'Onta Foreman scored a 19-yard touchdown run to give Texas a 37-35 lead with 3:29 left in the fourth, the Irish blocked Trent Domingue's extra point and Shaun Crawford took it the house for the two points and tied the game at 37-37.
    http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17467627

In the first overtime, Swoopes scored his second rushing major of the game from three yards out to give the Longhorns a 44-37 lead.

The Irish replied quickly on one play when Kizer threw his fifth touchdown of the game to C.J. Sanders from 25 yards out to force a second overtime period tied at 44-44.

After the Texas defense held Notre Dame to a 39-yard field goal from Yoon, Texas' used the 18-wheeler to win the game. Swoopes used a 10-yard run to get the Longhorns to the six and then two plays later, Swoopes extended to cross the goal line from six yards to win the game and grab another huge scalp in the Charlie Strong era.

Three of the Top 10 teams had a monkey wrench thrown in their College Football Playoff plans in Week 1 as they suffered losses, #3 Oklahoma, #5 LSU and now #10 Notre Dame.

#4 ranked Florida State Seminoles had to claw their way back to pull away from #11 ranked Ole Miss Rebels, 45-34 inside Orlando's Camping World Stadium.

Hugh Freeze and the Rebels once led 28-6 in the second quarter.

Chad Kelly torched the Seminoles defense with three first half touchdown passes and Akeem Judd added a 11-yard touchdown run during the barrage.

However, Freeze and the Rebels lost their best cornerback Kendarius Webster to a nasty leg injury.
    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ole-mis...011212694.html

Jimbo Fisher and freshman Seminoles QB Deondre Francois took advantage when Francois led Florida State to their first touchdown of the game before halftime when Francois hooked up with Travis Rudolph for a 16-yard touchdown to cut Ole Miss' lead to 15, 28-13 at the half.

Florida State took over the third quarter pitching a 23-0 shutout.

Ricky Aguayo started the rally with a 40-yard field goal to cut the Rebels' lead to 12.

Kelly felt a lot of heat as he threw three interceptions and was sacked five times as the Seminoles defense applied the clamps. Ole Miss had four turnovers in the game.

Freddie Stevenson's one-yard touchdown run with 11:28 to go and Kermit Whitfield's three-yard scamper gave the Seminoles their first lead of the game, 29-28 with 9:17 left in the third.

Francois threw his second touchdown of the game to Ryan Izzo from two yards out to extend Florida State's lead to 36-28 heading into the fourth.

Aguayo's 40-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter completed a 33-0 run for the Seminoles as they led 39-28.

Kelly threw his fourth touchdown of the game to Van Jefferson from 20 yards out to pull Ole Miss to within five, 39-34 with 12:09 to go.

However, Aguayo booted two more field goals to seal the win.

Kelly had 313 yards and four touchdowns on 21/39 passing, but threw three interceptions in a losing effort.

However, Francois had 419 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions on 33/52 passing trumping Kelly's statline in an amazing win by Fisher and the Seminoles.

    BB55's 3 Up/3 Down - 2016 College Football Season Week 1

After a Week 1 that lived up to the hype as one of the greatest opening weekends in college football history, it's time for my 3 Up/3 Down segment.

    3 Up
    1. Houston Cougars
Why? Tom Herman's Houston Cougars grabbed another scalp in their current era. First it was the 2015 Chik-Fil-A Peach Bowl against the Florida State Seminoles. This time, it was against the #3 ranked team in the nation in the Oklahoma Sooners. The Cougars could be in the discussion for the College Football Playoffs if they run the table and have Oklahoma win the Big XII title that boost their playoff hopes.

    2. Nebraska Cornhuskers remember Sam Foltz
Why? What a classy scene in Lincoln, Nebraska's Memorial Stadium as the Cornhuskers played 10 men without a punter in the backfield as they remember their punter Sam Foltz who died in a car accident before the season.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYf0vYkUtyA

That tribute reminded me of the Washington Redskins started a game against the Buffalo Bills with 10 men on the field instead of the usual 11 after Sean Taylor died.

    3. Pittsburgh Panthers RB James Conner returns to the field after surviving cancer
Why? "I choose to not fear cancer...I will play football again."
Those were the words of Pitt RB James Conner who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer early December 2015.
    http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/P...s/201512040284

On September 3, 2016, Conner came back and led the Pitt Panthers with two touchdowns (one rush, one receiving) in Pitt's 28-7 win over the Villanova Wildcats.

    3 Down
    1.USC
Why? USC was thrashed, humiliated and embarrassed in their 52-6 vaporizing at the hands of the defending national champion and #1 ranked team in the nation in the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Is Pat Haden regretting taking the interim label out of Clay Helton? USC is now 0-3 since Helton was named permanent head coach.

    2. Mississippi State
Why? Not a good way to start the post-Dak Prescott era for Dan Mullen and the Mississippi State Bulldogs after a 21-20 stunning defeat to the South Alabama Jaguars.
Arguably, the biggest upset of Week 1 and a candidate for upset of the season.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIBbnq53nPw

    3. Bluegrass State Bummers
Why? The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers need to work on their entrances. What a massive fail.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ-2Df54oVA

If WKU's entrance was horrific, the Kentucky Wildcats are no better.
Mark Stoops and the UK Wildcats were up 35-10 and thought their game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles was in the bag.

However, Nick Mullens and Southern Miss outscored Kentucky 34-0 the rest of the way to grab a scalp in Lexington.

A week 1 to forget in the Bluegrass State.

It was the Lamar Jackson show inside the Carrier Dome as #13 ranked Louisville Cardinals creamed the Syracuse Orange 62-28.

Jackson had 610 yards of total offense (411 passing, 199 rushing) and five total touchdowns including four on the ground.

Cardinals RB Brandon Radcliff added 156 rushing yards a 48-yard major.

Syracuse QB Eric Dungey tried to keep the Orange in the game with 286 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns including 255 passing yards and three touchdown passes, two to Amba Etta-Tawo, but the Louisville defense sacked him four times and forced two turnovers.

Re: 2016 NCAA Football Season Thread (FBS and FCS)

Less than a year after Michigan State beat Michigan when Michigan tried to punt on the final play and the punter fumbled, another team in Michigan won when their opponent's attempt to run out the clock failed. Oklahoma State was at home and led 27-24. On fourth down, Oklahoma State threw a long incomplete pass, and time expired. Unfortunately for Oklahoma State, the referees conferred and called an intentional grounding penalty, making a loss on downs and giving Central Michigan an untimed play from their own 49 yard line. I know that the game cannot end on a penalty by the defense, but I don't know if I've seen or heard of the game not being allowed to end on a penalty by the offense like that. Central Michigan threw a 42 yard pass to the 9 yard line, where the receiver got pulled down from behind, but he managed to throws a lateral before being tackled. A teammate caught the ball and ran in the end zone. Oklahoma State touched him before he got in the end zone, but the ball broke the plane of the end zone in time, and Central Michigan won 30-27. It was Central Michigan's first win over a team ranked in the AP Poll since 1991.
