You're right about Tim Brown making the hall. He was drafted in '88.
In the '85 draft, it was Eddie Brown from Miami, who was also pretty good. And he was drafted ahead of Rice.

Actually, those two Browns must have been confused for each other often- and probably didn't like it. One played for ND, the other for Miami. Those teams hated each other during the Catholics vs Convicts rivalry days.

How often could they have crossed path in college at 3 years apart? Once maybe?

Trading for a player who's going to get cut is the most jets thing possible.

If he gets cut, he gets to pick who he signs with. The Jets gave up very little and ensured that they're the team that gets him.

It's not a big loss if he doesn't pick them. Instead they gave up a pick.

They're also cutting Harvin. Bad teams stay bad by wasting assets.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. They're saving money and improving draft position by swapping Marshall for Harvin.

They're trade a fifth for Marshall then cutting Harvin who they traded a pick for. So they gave up two picks to end up with a head case who was going to be a free agent anyway. And they keep acquiring these receivers while having no way of utilizing them because of their QB situation.

You said that by cutting Harvin they were wasting assets.
    • If they keep Harvin they owe SEA a 4th rounder, have his $10 million on the books, and have Percy Harvin on the team.
    • If they cut Harvin they owe SEA a 6th rounder, save $10 million on the books, and have no WR in his place.
    • If they cut Harvin and trade for Marshall, they owe SEA a 6th, CHI a 5th, save $3 million on the books, and have Brandon Marshall on the team.

Additionally, by trading for Marshall they inherit his present deal which has no guaranteed money left in it. Signing him as a FA would result in a lot of guaranteed money. A cuttable contract has definite value in the NFL.

Unless you think Marshall will be a complete bust next year (or you are simply out on him as a player on the whole), it seems to me they chose the most efficient use of assets possible in this scenario.

For next year, possibly. But this team won't be competitive next year, so they should be thinking beyond that.

Jets got a very nice WR. If healthy he will surprise Jet fans. Cutler next to the Jets?

Didn't know there was no more guaranteed money in his deal. That's a big plus.

Jets seem to love high profile head cases as WR's. Braylon, Santonio, Percy....and now Marshall. Difference is that Marshall can be dominant, which is something Decker is not.

Like the move based on the contract situation, but still want to see how they handle the QB situation. Geno is not a leader, nor a starting NFL QB, imo. He needs to be holding the clipboard.

I'm definitely meh on the deal strictly from the personality/injury standpoint from Marshall. I'm not very worried about a RB-like sudden decline because he's 30, and I love the contract situation (for the sake of specificity, the guaranteed money is gone AFTER this season). I'm simply wary of how he'll fit (especially with an awful QB) and if he can stay on the field. On paper I think turning Harvin into Marshall, improved draft position, and more cap space is a great use of assets for a team that has been desperately seeking a #1 type WR and is at the point where they need to spend a LOT of money just to get to the salary floor.

And please god, no Cutler. I'm begging. PLEASE. I'd rather be the lead story on Sports Center for 6 months after Marshall shanks Geno in the postgame shower than watch a Cutler-led Jets team.
