2018 FIFA World Cup Football/Soccer Thread

Less than a year after World Cup 2014, qualifying for World Cup 2018 begins for some countries in Asia (AFC) and North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) in March. On Thursday January 15, CONCACAF did the draw for the first two rounds of qualifying and here are the results:

    Round 1:
    1. Bermuda vs. Bahamas
    2. British Virgin Islands vs. Dominica
    3. Barbados vs. U.S. Virgin Islands
    4. Turks and Caicos Islands vs. St. Kitts and Nevis
    5. Nicaragua vs. Anguilla
    6. Belize vs. Cayman Islands
    7. Curacao vs. Montserrat

    Round 2:
St. Vincent and the Grenadines vs. Guyana
Antigua and Barbuda vs. St. Lucia
    Puerto Rico vs. Grenada
    Canada vs. Series 2 winner
Dominican Republic vs. Series 6 winner
    Guatemala vs. Series 1 winner
    Aruba vs. Series 3 winner
Series 4 winner vs. El Salvador
    Series 7 winner vs. Cuba
    Series 5 winner vs. Suriname

CONCACAF will have five rounds of qualifying. The first three rounds have two teams play each other twice with each team hosting one game and the most total goals advances. The first team in each series listed above hosts the first leg. Round 4, the Semifinals, has 3 groups of 4 requiring each country to play 6 games, once at home and once away against each opponent. The Top 2 in each group advance to Round 5, the Hexagonal, in which 6 countries play 10 games each, again playing every opponent once at home and once away. The Top 3 qualify for World Cup 2018 and the fourth place team goes into a playoff against a team from South America (CONMEBOL), Asia (AFC), or Oceania (OFC) with the confederation to be determined in July.

Here is the schedule for CONCACAF qualifying:

    March 2015: Round 1
    June 2015: Round 2
July 2015 in Russia: Qualifying Draw for all confederations including Rounds 3 and 4 for CONCACAF
    September 2015: Round 3
November 2015: Round 4- Games 1 and 2 of 6 (USA starts here)
    March 2016: Round 4- Games 3 and 4 of 6
There will be a special Copa America 2016 in the summer so CONCACAF will not have qualifiers then.
    September 2016: Round 4- Games 5 and 6 of 6
    November 2016: Round 5- Games 1 and 2 of 10
    March 2017: Round 5- Games 3 and 4 of 10
    June 2017: Round 5- Games 5 and 6 of 10
    August 28 to September 2017: Round 5- Games 7 and 8 of 10
    October 2017: Round 5- Games 9 and 10 of 10
November 2017: Fourth place team playoff against a team from another confederation
    December 2017: World Cup draw

2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying: Asia (AFC)

    Format:
    http://www.the-afc.com/executive-com...ian-cup-finals

First round: The lowest ranked teams will play home-and-away over two legs to reduce the total number of teams to 40.

Second round: The 40 teams will be divided into eight groups of five to play home-and-away round-robin matches, where the eight group winners and the four best group runners-up will advance to the third round of FIFA World Cup qualification as well as qualify for the AFC Asian Cup finals.

Third round: The 12 teams (an increase from 10 for 2014) will be divided into two groups of six to play home-and-away round-robin matches. Dependent on the number of qualifiers from the AFC, the top two teams of each group will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and the two third placed teams will advance to the fourth round.

Fourth round (play-off for 5th place): Dependent on the number of qualifiers from the AFC, the two third-placed teams in each group from the third round will play against each other home-and-away over two legs to determine which team will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.

The next best 24 teams eliminated from World Cup qualification in the second round will be divided into six groups of four and compete for the remaining slots of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup (the third round of 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification will be separate from the third round of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification).

    Format: http://www.oceaniafootball.com/ofc/N...S/Default.aspx

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar to be held in late November-late December?
    http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/qatar20...p-2529262.html

This is just getting nuttier and nuttier.

First, FIFA gave Qatar the 2022 FIFA World Cup over much-prepared nations like the United States and Australia.

    Then, a lot of corruption.

And now, this: forcing the soccer leagues especially those in Europe to upset their schedule for a month for the 2022 tournament if the dates get the green light.

That is a lot of unprepared circumstances that FIFA failed to plan out for Qatar's 2022 bid.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_F...C)#First_round has the results of the first qualifiers which were in Asia. Five countries were eliminated this morning (and separately Zimbabwe was banned by FIFA). Bhutan, who was the only country with 0 points in the March 2015 FIFA Rankings, defeated Sri Lanka twice. Bhutan is 209th but could move up over 50 spots in the April 2015 FIFA Rankings.

    Dates: 22 November 18 December 2022

This should be an interesting FIFA World Cup in 2022 in the winter months. The 2022 FIFA World Cup going up against College Football and the NFL for ratings.

I think the 2022 tournament can grab ratings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but not on the other days.

2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying - Europe (UEFA)

    Format:
The qualification structure is as follows:
    http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/execu...d=2226916.html

First round (group stage): The 52 teams will be divided into nine groups (seven groups of six teams and two groups of five teams) to play home-and-away round-robin matches. Assuming the same number of slots allocated to UEFA as the previous World Cup (13 berths), the winners of each group will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and the eight best runners-up will advance to the second round (play-offs).

Second round (play-offs): The eight best runners-up from the first round will play home-and-away over two legs. The four winners will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
