Hate this thread title. I keep forgetting it's the obituary thread. Maybe I'll get it through my head by April.

He's in France. They don't have the internet there yet so there's no internet cafes he can stop at and say hello to us.
    Let the kids play.

They used to have the internet, but there was a hacking attempt and they immediately surrendered.

It was good intentions overdone. Too many people were yelling their entire posts, but it was made way too restrictive.

There is a workaround, though, so it's not all bad.

    ICH EIN ANONYMOUSEN!!!! indeed.

Barney Bush, the well-known — if sometimes controversial — Scottish terrier of former President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, died Friday after losing a battle with lymphoma. He was 12.5 years old.

Often referred to as the “first dog,” Barney spent the entire eight years of Bush’s presidency at the White House, starring in videos via the “Barney Cam” and meeting the many famous faces to pass through the historic home.

“Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House,” Bush said in a statement announcing Barney’s death. “He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend.”

Barney was an avid armadillo hunter and golf ball chaser and enjoyed his days guarding the South Lawn entrance to the White House “as if he were a Secret Service agent,” Bush said of the dog, who would be 87.5 years old in dog years.

I saw that earlier! It was such a nice tribute from GWB. I had something in my eye.

Dogs don't live long enough. Our 13+ year old Yellow Lab is, sadly, not long for this world. Not looking forward to the day she'll need to be put down.

    RIP Barney.

I'm very sorry to hear this. It's so difficult to know when to make that call. I hope you have more quality time left with her than you expect. Dogs are family.

It will be a rough call, but my son is a Vet & he will let us know when it is the right call.

Andre Cassagnes, the inventor of the Etch A Sketch toy that generations of children drew on, shook up and started over, has died in France, the toy's maker said.

Cassagnes died Jan. 16 in a Paris suburb at age 86, said the Ohio Art Co., based in Bryan in northwest Ohio. The cause wasn't disclosed Saturday.

Then an electrical technician, Cassagnes came upon the Etch A Sketch idea in the late 1950s when he peeled a translucent decal from a light switch plate and found pencil mark images transferred to the opposite face, the Toy Industry Association said.

Essie Mae Washington-Williams, the mixed-race daughter of onetime segregationist senator Strom Thurmond who kept her parentage secret for more than 70 years, has died. She was 87...

Washington-Williams was the daughter of Thurmond and his family’s black maid. The identity of her famous father was rumored for decades in political circles and the black community. She later said she kept his secret because, “He trusted me, and I respected him.”

Stuart Freeborn, a movie makeup artist whose alchemy helped shape the outlandish space creatures that stalk the “Star Wars” films — including the big-eared, big-brained little Yoda, whom he modeled after himself and Albert Einstein — died on Tuesday in London. He was 98...

Mr. Freeborn also made Chewbacca, the furry 7-foot-3 co-pilot of the hero Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford. (Peter Mayhew played Chewbacca.) He made Jabba the Hutt, a large, sluglike alien that required three puppeteers to operate, for the third film in the original series, “Return of the Jedi.” To create the bizarre crowd of extraterrestrials who gather at the “Star Wars” cantina, Mr. Freeborn recruited his wife, Kay, and son, Graham, both makeup artists, to help.
He also created the three entirely different looks Peter Sellers had in Dr. Strangelove, as well as the ape-men in the beginning of 2001.

Lovely solo from Byrd beginning around the 3:35 mark while he was with on of my favorite versions of the Horace Silver Quintet.
