I've seen them do it at a wedding. (August Cape wedding during pennant race).
"Deep to left! Yastrzemski will not get it! It's a home run! A three-run homer by Bucky Dent! And the Yankees now lead by a score of 3-2!" - New York Yankees announcer Bill White (October 2, 1978)

It never made any sense to me. Most of the time it's not true, and when it is, who cares? They're irrelevant. Why are you making them relevant by focusing your attention on them needlessly?

My personal observation is that it's an identity shortcut. It's employed most heavily and enthusiastically by casual fans and drunken college kids who don't really follow the game (or the team) seriously and are simply attaching themselves to a scene. They generally can't carry on a conversation about the team any deeper than what they've overheard at the water cooler at work (or worse, on the FM sports talk shows). Insofar as their superficial understanding goes, the most important thing about being a Red Sox fan isn't to know how JBJ has been hitting the last month, or what Porcello is likely to throw in what count, or what the farm system looks like. The most important thing isn't to actually be a fan of the Red Sox; it's to HATE the Yankees.
