The Former Yankee Performance Thread v4.0
2008...lets get the ball rolling.
From Rotoworld today:
Pirates purchased the contract of infielder Doug Mientkiewicz from Triple-A Indianapolis.Pirates released RHP Jaret Wright.
Wright would have been a free agent come Thursday if not added to the team's 40-man roster, and was always a bit of a long shot to make the team. He currently sports a 3.38 ERA after eight innings, but has four walks to just one strike out. He'll likely catch on somewhere.
Pirates optioned OF Kevin Thompson to Triple-A Indianapolis

Mar 27 Barry Srvluga, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Nationals 1B Nick Johnson appears close to securing the starting first baseman's job. Manager Manny Acta is not expected to announce the starter until sometime during the weekend. However, Johnson started at first in back-to-back road games this week and played all nine innings in both games.

The Reds optioned pitcher Bill Bray to Triple-A Louisville, reassigned infielder Andy Phillips to Minor League camp and returned Jose Capellan to the Red Sox via the Rule 5 Draft rule.
Phillips was reassigned, but it is unclear at which Minor League level he will start. The infielder batted .277 with 11 RBIs in Spring Training, but it wasn't enough to persuade the Reds to keep the non-roster invitee.

Worse case scenario, if no offers come, maybe he asks Cashman for a one day contract and retires as a Yankee.“Sometimes all of us need to be reminded that this is just a kid’s game. We just happen to be grown men playing it.” --Mike Stanton

A few updates on former Yankees, from Abraham:
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/03/2...tions-of-note/
Chris Woodward signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies.
The Reds are going to pay off LHP Mike Stanton and release him.
INF Andy Phillips was assigned to minor league camp by the Reds.
Toronto granted C Sal Fasano his unconditional release.
LHP Mike Myers was released by the Dodgers.
It appears LHP Ron Villone will make the Cardinals and INF Doug Mientkiewicz is sticking with the Pirates.

Alfonso Soriano will be the first Cub to make consecutive Opening Day starts at two different positions since 1996. Soriano started in center field last year, and will start in left on Monday. The last player to do that was Rey Sanchez, who started at second base in 1995 and at shortstop in 1996.
Soriano has a way to go to equal the four different positions that George Altman and Billy Williams have started on Opening Day for the Cubs. Altman started four, and played a different position each time (center field in 1959, first in 1960, right in 1962, and left in 1965.
