The Twins are a stupid organization. They signed Hughes back in 2014 on the cheap for $8 million a year over 3 years. In one season Hughes outplayed his contract. Instead of high-fiving themselves for making such a smart gamble they ripped up the contract and handed him a new backloaded 5 year $58 million deal. Then Hughes returned to his normal inconsistent self. Had they not ripped up the contract and Hughes was up for a new deal after 2016 he would not have seen the $13 million he is making now.

I called out the Twins for this stupidity and was right.

Phil Hughes....one of the nicest, down to earth players in the game with zero attitude. Unfortunately, he was such a disappointment on the mound for various reasons. I wish him and his family well.

I would pick up Hughes and stick him in the bullpen just like the 2009 season dude was electric that year
The real reason why the Yankees keep winning is cause the other team can't stop staring at the damn pinstripes

Still remember Hughes' second career start against Texas. He was a sure thing.

He already *was* in the Twins bullpen with that 6.75 ERA.

Trivia: The hamstring injury that started Phil's troubles came while pitching to .... Mark Teixeira, the previous thread topic.

    Until the hamstring popped.

Still remember people saying he was a two-pitch pitcher and then he rattled off consecutive, dirty changeups that made an in-his-prime Teixeira look silly.

Hughes holds the record for highest strikeout-to-walk ratio in a season with 11.625, which he did in 2014. His 0.6868 walks per innings that year are the 37th fewest all-time, and the only lower amount after 1920 was 0.4301 by Carlos Silva in 2005. Hughes and Silva did it for Minnesota.

Youre not alone in your disdain for Tex and his willingness to throw former teammmates and managers under the bus. Apparently, CC feels the same way based on his comments today:

Nice return for Eovaldi. 6 No hit innings against OAK. Good for him.

Oakland had 0 runs, 1 hit, and 4 errors. The two former Yankees that Tampa Bay used, Eovaldi and Vidal Nuno, didn't allow hits. Wilmer Font allowed a single to Jed Lowrie with 1 out in the seventh. Nuno's career record of 6-21 is much worse than his career ERA of 4.21.

    i forgot about Nuno.

Funny fact is that we traded Nuno for 3 months of a damn good Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy eventually was able to get $48 million from the Dodgers and was terrible ever since.

McCarthy had a 3.98 ERA last year. He has a 4.65 ERA since he left us, but his record is good at 16-9.

Miguel Cabrera was activated from the disabled list, which made Detroit designate Pete Kozma for assignment. Kozma had 1 hit for us last year and had a .495 OPS so far this year.
