Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: ATTENTION EVERYONE – New Community Standards

Big news - our revised Community Standards are finally online. Please access them on the footer of the page, towards the right-hand edge..... The main point of differentiation between NYYFans and most other sports forums is the sense of community that has been fostered here, since our site was founded many years ago. In order to maintain this atmosphere, we must hold posters to certain basic expectations when participating here..... To this end, we will be conducting a relaunch of our...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Message Boards for Other Teams: A List

Since there have been a couple queries about message boards for other teams in the past couple days, I thought it might be useful to have some sort of list of good fan sites around the MLB. My goal is to have only two or three sites per team--it's not meant to include every forum out there. I also prefer to post forum sites over blogs, although if a blog has a game thread or is really, really good, I'll include it. Thanks for all the suggestions! Edit: Updated on 8/3/11-- New input...

  2. The Red Sox Thread

Now that the Community Standards are back online, we can re-start a discussion of the Red Sox. As per those Standards, any posting in this thread must be done in a civil manner. That means a genuine discussion without baiting, trolling, flaming or mocking using words or pictures etc. That doesn't mean you can't state your opinions of a player or the team, but do it in a respectful manner. Repeated warnings for those who don't comply will result in the loss of access to the Around the Majors...

Reds legend Joe Morgan has passed away at the age of 77. It's been a horrible year for MLB Hall Of Famers: https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/reds/2020/10/12/cincinnati-reds-hall-famer-joe-morgan-dies-77/5966790002/

Tough night for Cards fans. Cardinals pitching legend and Hall Of Famer Bob Gibson passed away at age 84. By all accounts, he was a badass on the mound. A little before my time. May he R.I.P.

  8. The New York Mets Thread

I decided to start a Mets thread because there have been a collection of smaller Mets threads in ATM and I think it would be best if we just had a larger thread to cover all things Mets. Two things about them strike me today... 1. Pelfry looked pretty good last night. 2. I have a feeling the Mets fans across the nation are beginning to sweat a little bit because right now the Braves are mashing. Ok. Go ahead, start discussing.

  9. Al mvp

Tatis seems to be running away in the NL. The AL as of now is a big toss up if you ask me. There's of course Trout who is in all likelihood the favorite, but hasn't even been the best player on his team this year given Rendon leads the AL with a 2.5 WAR. And despite having arguably the two best players in the entire league they're nowhere near an 8 team playoff field. If I had a vote now it'd be for the ageless wonder that is Nelson Cruz. Second in the league in WAR at 2.2 despite...

  10. The Blue Jays Thread

Figured at 23-16 the Blue Jays could use a thread. I am pretty surprised they are doing this well considering their team ERA is 9th in the AL and their team batting avg is 12th (but 2nd in AL with Rays in runs scored). What do people expect them to finish? I kinda figured they would get around 75 wins but now I'm starting to wonder....

  12. Astros cheating investigation

The details of this story are insane. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28066522/ex-astros-pitcher-mike-fiers-team-stole-signs-camera https://twitter.com/Jomboy_/status/1194348775965437952?s=20 What should the penalty be for these actions if they are substantiated? This is analogous to if an MLB team had an organized PED program. In my opinion, the coaches involved should be banned for life and players should receive suspensions equivalent to a single PED failure (and yes, I know...

  13. Red Sox Cheating Investigation

This is a fascinating piece on the potential gain the Sox saw from their alleged cheating scheme in their 2018 championship season. Like most other rational people, I personally found what Boston did to be much less offensive than what Houston did. The data on the impact the cheating had though says that it may have had roughly the same positive effect. Much more detail and data in the link. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-much-did-the-red-sox-benefit-from-their-sign-stealing-scheme/

  14. KBO (Korea Baseball Organization) opening day 5/5

Since there won't be anything close to professional sports in the USA for a while, I'm curious about the KBO. Opening Day is 1am tomorrow and will be broadcast on ESPN. At least it's better than the simulated games. This is also the "bat flip" league. 15. 2020 Hall of Fame Ballot

https://www.mlb.com/news/2020-hall-of-fame-ballot links to the Hall of Fame Ballot. It may sound easy to know if a player is "active" or retired, but Jose Valverde is a special case. He last played in MLB in 2014. Having not played in MLB for five years, he's eligible and on the ballot. Baseball-Reference still has him as active. When I tried correcting them, they said he's active because he plays in the Mexican League, which is affiliated with MLB. His performance in the Mexican League...

  16. Baseball-Reference Play Index Becoming Stathead With Increased Price and Ability

Sports-Reference said they were considering charging for Play Indexes in other sports, which are currently free. Then they made Stathead to combine the sports. Their e-mail today said that there is a big price increase to $8 per month, which is 2 2/3 times the previous price of $36 per year. The only benefit mentioned in the e-mail was that it is ad-free. I looked at the new appearance and found other benefits which I will rarely use but will use occasionally. The old limit was up to four...

  17. The Athletic: What if MLB had ties? We crunched the numbers and here’s how your team

https://theathletic.com/1757469/2020/04/24/what-if-mlb-had-ties-we-crunched-the-numbers-and-heres-how-your-team-did/ is titled "What if MLB had ties? We crunched the numbers and here’s how your team did." You have to pay, so it's illegal to reproduce it for free, but I'll say a little. They gave 2 points for a win in 9 innings or fewer and 1 point for a tie after 9 innings, which is a formula that is easy to make up. Soccer has wins worth three times draws (MLS uses "ties," while most of the...

  19. Derek Jeter

I read where Derek Jeter (you might recall he spent time in the Yankee Organization) will forgo his salary for an indefinite period of time. Quite a sacrifice. No wonder he had to rent out his enormous estate to Giselle and family. Quick question though - Where is he living now? Tampa Estate is occupied. Or is it so big he's staying out back in the garage apartment?

  20. RIP Tony Fernandez

Ex Yankee and former star with Toronto dead at 57. In his prime he was just about the best defensive shortstop around and put up a few good offensive years as well. Vaguely remember him hitting for the cycle with the Yankees. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/bluejays/2020/02/16/tony-fernandez-former-all-star-blue-jays-shortstop-dies-57/4779083002/
