  1. Home Run Derby

  2. Royals / Athletics trade

The Royals moved Jeremy Giambi to Oakland (where he joins his brother Jason)for Brett Laxton, a decent pitching prospect. Laxton had been one of the names floated in the Ramiro Mendoza to Oakland rumors a couple of weeks ago. I think this is a good move for both teams, especially KC. They have a wealth of OF/DH types, and need more young pitching. Combine Laxton with Jose Rosado, Blake Stein, Jeff Suppan, and Jay Witasick and you've got at least a credible rotation. That combined...

  4. I look at this in a whole new way...

My history teacher's great uncle played for the Yankees. He called me over, told me to say "And this one time, at band camp..." and then showed me Jack Quinn's stats. Jack Quinn lost Game #3 in the 1921 WS, but his ERA was like 3.28 or so. That's pretty good for back then. He never told his real age (reminds me of El Duque!), but he was the last pitcher to legally be able to use the spit ball. They say he died around the age of 76-8?. They aren't quite sure, but I do know that he was living...

Now or never Indians arm themselves for October with Finley By Tom Withers Associated Press WINTER HAVEN, Fla. Of all the reasons the Cleveland Indians coveted Chuck Finley he's left-handed, pitches 200-plus innings a year and owns the New York Yankees one is paramount. They want to win a World Series. Now. 12. Mantle & Maris...those were the days!

My fondest baseball memory was when my father took the whole family to a Sunday doubleheader (they had 'em a lot on Sunday's and holidays)...and M & M would hit back to back homers, sometimes more than once...talk about being a part of history! The players would park their cars on the street (across from the big lot on the side), and there were no guards or barricades to keep you from going right up to them for autographs. My father died in October (even though he was so sick, he got to see...

  15. N.Y TIMES : "Crime and (Much) Punishment" By GEORGE VECSEY

February 25, 2000 SPORTS OF THE TIMES Crime and (Much) Punishment By GEORGE VECSEY uilty. We are all guilty of something. Plus, just look at the mugs around us in sports the last few days. Let's not get radical like the Queen of Hearts, whose judicial temperament was summed up in the famous phrase: "Sentence first -- verdict afterwards." Let's look at the evidence and then try to mete out some justice.

  18. Add Radke to the 2001 $hoping List...

Damn another chucker turning down a 10mil plus contract offer... Radke spurned twins 3year 21mil deal... I respect the twins for at least trying and think the offer was more trhan respectable, but uhh, I also thought the mutts offer of 5years @ $55mil was respectable for hampton and the O's offer of 5 years @ $50 was respectable for moose... but maybe I'm outta the loop... I guess I didn't get the memo that ace's minimim wage perhaps due to cone's deal is now 13mil minimum... I dunno,...

  19. Strategy Question

I've often wondered why managers don't "surprise" their opponents by switching starting pitchers just before the game begins (but just after the lineups have been announced). This could be used when playing a team that uses a large number of lefty-righty platoons in its lineup. If you announce that you're going to start a righty, they use their left-handed line-up. When you hand in your line-up card, you have your lefty instead. The opponent is left with a poor choice of pinch-hitting...
