Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  1. Mantle & Maris...those were the days!

My fondest baseball memory was when my father took the whole family to a Sunday doubleheader (they had 'em a lot on Sunday's and holidays)...and M & M would hit back to back homers, sometimes more than once...talk about being a part of history! The players would park their cars on the street (across from the big lot on the side), and there were no guards or barricades to keep you from going right up to them for autographs. My father died in October (even though he was so sick, he got to see...

  3. Here's some Trivia For You...

    1) Who robbed Joe DiMaggio of a game tying homerun in the sixth game of the 1947 World Series? 2) Who was the first ever designated hitter, and when did it happen? 3) When did Billy Martin become manager?

  4. N.Y TIMES : "Crime and (Much) Punishment" By GEORGE VECSEY

February 25, 2000 SPORTS OF THE TIMES Crime and (Much) Punishment By GEORGE VECSEY uilty. We are all guilty of something. Plus, just look at the mugs around us in sports the last few days. Let's not get radical like the Queen of Hearts, whose judicial temperament was summed up in the famous phrase: "Sentence first -- verdict afterwards." Let's look at the evidence and then try to mete out some justice.

  7. Add Radke to the 2001 $hoping List...

Damn another chucker turning down a 10mil plus contract offer... Radke spurned twins 3year 21mil deal... I respect the twins for at least trying and think the offer was more trhan respectable, but uhh, I also thought the mutts offer of 5years @ $55mil was respectable for hampton and the O's offer of 5 years @ $50 was respectable for moose... but maybe I'm outta the loop... I guess I didn't get the memo that ace's minimim wage perhaps due to cone's deal is now 13mil minimum... I dunno,...

  8. Strategy Question

I've often wondered why managers don't "surprise" their opponents by switching starting pitchers just before the game begins (but just after the lineups have been announced). This could be used when playing a team that uses a large number of lefty-righty platoons in its lineup. If you announce that you're going to start a righty, they use their left-handed line-up. When you hand in your line-up card, you have your lefty instead. The opponent is left with a poor choice of pinch-hitting...

  10. Koufax Strikes Out 15 Yankees

I was fortunate to have a seat right behind home plate in the old yankee stadium for the first game of the 1963 Worl Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers when Koufax struck out 15 of my beloved yankees. I believed he got the Mick a couple of times and Maris a couple. He was throwing "Aspirins on that day. Best left handed pitcher I ever saw

  11. Uh oh, Boomer's Spouting Off AGAIN!!

Well about the only thing in my mind that can prevent the Jays frm making the post in 2000 is 1) they duplicate they're '99 tremendous choking act, or 2) they implode from within for NON baseabll reasons... they got the talent, player for player, they're more balanced than anyone not named the yanks in the al... and they have gaston back in the fold... but they also got the volatile boomer... last seas he requested a trade before the allstar break and now this seas hasn't even started and...

  12. AngeLOSER, Lowballs Moose...

I really suspect that this guy angelos is not only a steiny wannabe, but may indeed be a steiny planted agent... first he dumps the one manager that ever gave them any respectable shot at winning, then he promotes some loser pitching coach to cheif stooge, then he forces out one of the best baseball minds in the game in gillick, then he forces out benitez, raffy, and alomar, then he hires some guy named wren to gm who immediately over pays for some bums named desheilds clark and johnson,...

  14. Selig Says Things Aren't Rosy For Rose

Selig says things aren't rosy for Rose FEBRUARY 16, 2000 Print it! MADISON, Wis. -- Bud Selig pretty much said Pete Rose has no chance of getting back into baseball as long as he's commissioner. While Selig hasn't officially responded to Rose's application for reinstatement, he made his strongest public statement yet on the career hits leader. "There is not a scintilla of give in that area," Selig said Wednesday during a speech at the Rotary Club of Madison. Following an...

  15. Ok, this really bothered me...

Once again, I was lurking over at the Red Sox chat and reading what was going on. There were some heckling Yankees fans, and there wasn't a problem (just the ANNOYING Yank-me bs (GET ORIGINAL, DAMMIT!!!)). After a while, however, this Yankees fan comes on and announces that he heard on CNN that Nomar Garciaparra was killed. This guy logs on with about 5 different names talking about how Nomar is dead and was murdered by his gay lover. I was incredibly angered by this and thought it was in...

  20. Irabu undergoes MRI

Montreal pitcher struggles during medical exam JUPITER, Florida (AP) -- Pitcher Hideki Irabu, traded from the New York Yankees to the Montreal Expos in the offseason, had a MRI on his right elbow Saturday. "It's a precautionary measure," Expos general manager Jim Beattie said. During an exam Friday, doctors saw that Irabu wasn't able to complete all the prescribed exercises. After examining the elbow more closely, they found "some anomalies," said Beattie. The Japanese starter...
