  2. Undervaluing Minor Leaguers: the Cano type hitter

So there's been considerable attention paid recently to the fact that successful groundball pitchers are easy to overlook in the minors because their stats (ERA and WHIP) become skewed by bad defensive players fielding behind them. For example, Webb's WHIP was consistently higher during his time in the minors primarily because he gave up more "hits" per 9 than he does now (due to bad defense), despite having K'd more per 9 back then than he does now, and walking about the same. Springing...

  5. Poll: Who of suspected steroid users would you vote into the HOF?

I'm starting this thread primarily because I've noticed that a lot of people seem to be willing to put McGwire into the HOF... something that I would find hard to do as I'm not confident about how much ability he would have had without the PEDs. If you ask me, he likely used them all his career. On the hand, we have guys like Bonds about whom, as fans, we seem to share a belief that he only used after 2000 or so, and that he was "clean" before, was already a HOFer, etc., though, of course, we...

  7. Crazy Morgan Ensberg story

Not sure how many people are aware of this story concerning former Yankee Morgan Ensberg and current MLB player Aaron Miles but I came across this today. Article was written back in 2006 when he played for the Astros and is a real interesting/shocking read. The story details how he was seconds away from being murdered. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's this one Houston Astro who's full of life. During batting practice, he'll tell Lance...

MIAMI (AP)—Aside from an encounter with a boastful Yankees fan, the Florida Marlins enjoyed their tour of Iraq and Kuwait. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AuV2P._9ykpthKfyqseg2doRvLYF?slug=ap-marlins-iraq&prov=ap&type=lgns Nice... :)

  9. Omar Vizquel to wear Luis Aparicio's 11

http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=4897287 Although Aparicio has no problem about that, I just think the whole thing is wrong. It's like AJ gets the #16 after Ford said it's OK. And I hope Girardi didn't do the same to Granderson.

  10. Opinions on the Rangers?

Just wondering what people think about them outside of Texas. The opinions I get here are a bit skewed. Their farm has been highly touted even after successfully graduating a few players to the major league level. On the other hand, Seattle looks like a GREAT team, and the Angels always have money. With a 70-something million dollar payroll (that will probably shrink to $70M), does anyone think they can truly be a competitive team for the next few years? Keep in mind the Angels and...

  12. Chicago Cubs Survival Guide

I would have posted this in the dedicated Cubs thread, but there doesn't seem to be one. I wonder why not? Anyway, I thought it was too funny for the "Interesting Baseball News Items That Do Not Warrant Their Own Thread" thread. It's from last August, but I ran across it when I was trying to find pictures of Soriano wearing his Yankees #12 for the "Countdown till pitchers & catchers report" thread. http://scottsimkus.wordpress.com/2009/08/09/chicago-cubs-survival-guide/ A...

  14. Bedard to Sign 1-Year Deal With the M's

Didn't think he'd be back: http://www.komonews.com/sports/83597117.html "A person with knowledge of the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the Seattle Mariners and left-hander Erik Bedard are getting close to a one-year contract, pending a physical."

  15. Pete Rose should be re-instated?

With all the Steroid admissions the past few years...do you guys consider what Rose did in the same league? I was reading this article in ESPN and it does seem like a double-standard. I guess the problem with Rose is that he signed something agreeing with the lifetime ban correct? I mean on the field the guy was a stud...4,256 hits is just insane if you think about it. It's like fricken Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts...and Cy Young's 511 wins....it makes you do a double take as if you had read...

  16. Can the Cardinals keep Pujols?

After paying Holliday $120M and over 17M/yr, where does this leave Pujols? Pujols has to be thinking $25M/year for at least the same 7 years. At the least. That's only $175M, btw. I think he's going to command something around $250M total, whether it be more year, higher AAV or both. I'd really like to see him stay in the NL of obvious reasons, but also because I think he just needs to stay in St. Louis. It's better for baseball, kind of like Mauer staying in MN, even though I'm almost...

  17. Players who have not yet officially retired, but are not on an MLB team?

I think the last few years, moreso than I can remember, we have seen a lot of guys not officially retire from baseball, but are not on any team currently because they are either no longer good, not healthy, etc. Who are some players who have not officially retired, yet are no longer part of MLB? I am sure the list is plenty, but here are two off the top of my head. -Barry Bonds -Frank Thomas
