Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  1. Is Everyone's DH Opinion Follow their Fan Allegiance?

I have been following the debate about the designated hitter for 40 years. Personally, I much prefer having it. I like seeing 9 major league hitters and keeping the pitcher for pitching, but of course others disagree. I was wondering recently whether people mostly like the rule followed by the league that their favorite team belongs to. When I see and hear people debating this subject, It seems that fans of NL teams mostly watch NL games and are used to it, and hate the DH. Fans of AL...

  2. 2015 MLB Player Awards Thread (MVP, ROY, etc.)

I thought I'd start a thread for this instead of just dumping the info into the Interesting News items mega-thread. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25364118/matt-harvey-and-prince-fielder-win-comeback-player-of-the-year Sorry A-Rod, they gave it to Prince.

According to Jon Heyman, sources say Mattingly's out as Dodgers' manager. Official announcement later today. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/25349312/sources-mattingly-dodgers-part-ways

  5. Playoffs Thread

Figured we need one of these to muse about the games as they transpire. Arrieta got a dose of his own medicine there. He hits two Pirates, and then takes issue with getting thrown at? Shut up and take your base, Jake.

  6. What is ahead for Baseballs future?

Let me simply present two or three issues and I'd ask each of you to expand on them and feel free to add more. Before I begin, I am a baseball fan first and foremost and will remain so for the rest of my life. 1. Baseball is skirting into dangerous and costly waters by offering longer and more expensive contracts. A prime example is Robbie Cano's 10 year $240 million contract. Another is ARods 10 year $252 million contract with Texas in 2001 Add Pujols 10 year $250 million contract...

  8. Report: Zack Greinke to opt out of contract with Dodgers

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13907905/zack-greinke-opt-deal-los-angeles-dodgers 31 years old. One of the most consistent pitchers in baseball. Would you make a run for him? What's the most years you'd go? He has/had 3 years left on his old deal, at $26MM/Year. I might go 5/140 on him, but no longer than that. Thoughts?

  10. 30 Year Old GM - David Stearns of Brewers

Brewers announced today they hired David Stearns as their GM. He is 30 years old. Heck, he's younger than some of the players around the league. Am I the only one who finds this awesome? I hope he does well.

  12. Robinson Cano Question

The decision to let .cano walk has been debated AD nauseum, so I won't go there. Cano is an almost certain Hall of Famer, needing to average only 150 hits a year for the remainder of his contract to get 3000. No hint of steroids. So, my question is, have the Yankees ever before failed to keep a future Hall of Famer still in his prime once they had him? I can't think of one. The closest I can come up with is Reggie, but he was going on 36 when they let him go, was coming off a bad...

  13. Yoan Moncada Thread

He has been officially declared a FA by MLB today but some US Office has to unblock him. How long could that take though? I think it's safe to say Yanks can sign him before the next IFA signing period. If you don't know much about this guy, read up on him on Fangraphs. Excellent writeup. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/yoan-moncada-the-most-fascinating-piece-of-the-offseason/ Really hoping Hal opens his wallet up for this guy. A young 4 or 5 tool shortstop with this much talent...

  14. How Closers are Constantly Misused by Road Teams

This has always bugged me. The Closer is the best reliever on the team, but he's all too often anchored to the 'Save' statistic. Game is tied headed to the bottom of the 9th. Road team will use its best available 'non closer' since it's not a save situation. Right? All too often that answer is 'yes', but here's why it's wrong: Let's get one thing out of the way: if, on the road you enter a tie game in the 9th inning, as a pitcher you have zero room for error. You give up a run, you lose....

  18. 2015 All-Star Game Voting Updates, Discussion, and Roster Selection

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/126716450/al-all-star-game-ballot-update-may-26 says Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is the leading vote getter. He has a .773 OPS. Oakland's Stephen Vogt, who is second at catcher, has a 1.009 OPS. Rodriguez, Teixeira, McCann, Gardner, Ellsbury, and Beltran are the six Yankees in the top five in their position or among the top fifteen outfielders. No Yankees are in the top two in their position or among the top six outfielders. Ellsbury is seventh among...
