Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  1. 30 Year Old GM - David Stearns of Brewers

Brewers announced today they hired David Stearns as their GM. He is 30 years old. Heck, he's younger than some of the players around the league. Am I the only one who finds this awesome? I hope he does well.

  3. Robinson Cano Question

The decision to let .cano walk has been debated AD nauseum, so I won't go there. Cano is an almost certain Hall of Famer, needing to average only 150 hits a year for the remainder of his contract to get 3000. No hint of steroids. So, my question is, have the Yankees ever before failed to keep a future Hall of Famer still in his prime once they had him? I can't think of one. The closest I can come up with is Reggie, but he was going on 36 when they let him go, was coming off a bad...

  4. Yoan Moncada Thread

He has been officially declared a FA by MLB today but some US Office has to unblock him. How long could that take though? I think it's safe to say Yanks can sign him before the next IFA signing period. If you don't know much about this guy, read up on him on Fangraphs. Excellent writeup. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/yoan-moncada-the-most-fascinating-piece-of-the-offseason/ Really hoping Hal opens his wallet up for this guy. A young 4 or 5 tool shortstop with this much talent...

  5. How Closers are Constantly Misused by Road Teams

This has always bugged me. The Closer is the best reliever on the team, but he's all too often anchored to the 'Save' statistic. Game is tied headed to the bottom of the 9th. Road team will use its best available 'non closer' since it's not a save situation. Right? All too often that answer is 'yes', but here's why it's wrong: Let's get one thing out of the way: if, on the road you enter a tie game in the 9th inning, as a pitcher you have zero room for error. You give up a run, you lose....

  9. 2015 All-Star Game Voting Updates, Discussion, and Roster Selection

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/126716450/al-all-star-game-ballot-update-may-26 says Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is the leading vote getter. He has a .773 OPS. Oakland's Stephen Vogt, who is second at catcher, has a 1.009 OPS. Rodriguez, Teixeira, McCann, Gardner, Ellsbury, and Beltran are the six Yankees in the top five in their position or among the top fifteen outfielders. No Yankees are in the top two in their position or among the top six outfielders. Ellsbury is seventh among...

  13. "...inconvenience at a ballgame irrelevant"

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/04/orioles-john-angelos-baltimore-protests-mlb "After protests in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray turned violent on Saturday, Baltimore sports-radio broadcaster Brett Hollander took to Twitter to argue that demonstrations that negatively impact the daily lives of fellow citizens are counter-productive. Orioles COO John Angelos, son of owner Peter Angelos, seized the opportunity to respond with a qualified and brilliant defense of those protesting."

  15. Who had the greatest decade, and not in the HOF?

I ask that to set up the parameters for what will hopefully be a good discussion on HOF worthy players throughout baseball history, but I'm self-interested enough to present my own bias here... Albert Bleeping Belle. Guy played 12 years, but his first two were only 40 games played. So, essentially in a 10 year career, he amassed 381 HR, and had a slash line of .295/.369/.564. His OPS+ is 144 (47th all time). In a particularly comical 1995 MVP vote, despite putting up video game #s, he...

  16. How can MLB bring back offense?

Sherman wrote an interesting article http://nypost.com/2015/04/11/mlb-needs-to-address-declining-offense/ Some interesting ones: 1. Put DH in NL 2. Ban shifts: must have 2 Infielders on each side of 2B all times 3. Tighten strike zone 4. 3 balls for a walk instead of 4

  17. Manfred: Montreal needs plan for new stadium

MLB is sending out a dual message in telling Montreal to come up with a plan and then we will talk and also telling Tampa Bay to get their act together fast. Manfred: Montreal needs plan for new stadium Meanwhile in Tampa Bay Latest Tampa Bay Rays stadium search proposal appears dead I can't see how Montreal in the AL East could fail as Yankees fans from upstate NY, Jays fans from eastern Ontario and Red Sox fans from Northern New England would come which the Expos never had....
