Forum: Around The Majors

Post anything related to baseball. If it doesn't fit in the Yankees Discussion forum, it fits here.

  1. Yasiel Puig - Defection from Cuba

Not sure if this has been discussed anywhere else, but it has the potential to cross into mainstream media as a news piece. Big potential for some serious consequences/federal investigations. Short summary here: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/18/la-dodgers-yasiel-puig-kidnapping-gangster-drama In depth article here. Worth the read. Excellent piece from ESPN....

For me it is Ebbet's Field, Polo Grounds and Old Yankee Stadium.

  3. Mike Trout's second year

How do the rest of you feel about this tremendous young, talented player. I think he is going to continue his magnificent career and have a great second year. I only wish he eventually becomes a Yankee when he becomes a free agent in years to come.;)

  5. Official Scoring For Plays With Deflected Balls

Arizona hit into this play against the Mets a few minutes ago: "Gerardo Parra singles on a soft fly ball to center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Gerardo Parra out at 2nd, center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to shortstop Ruben Tejada to pitcher Dillon Gee." I expect MLB to call it a single to Tejada (who threw the ball in after Nieuwenhuis touched but was unable to catch it) deflected by Nieuwenhuis and give Tejada an assist but not Nieuwenhuis. I think if the ball was thrown in by the LF or RF...

  7. Hypothetical Question About First Inning Pitcher Injury

If the road team bats around in the top of the first inning and their pitcher bats and then gets injured while running, can he get credit for a game started if he leaves injured after playing but not throwing a pitch?

  8. Relievers awards now named after Rivera and Hoffman

So the MLB has announced that the award for AL Reliever of the year will be named after Mariano Rivera and the NL Reliever of the year after Trevor Hoffman. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mlb-names-reliever-awards-rivera-hoffman-article-1.1750790 I wonder if MLB had this pre-planned from when Hoffman retired.

  17. MLB Issues Statement on Arizona Senate Bill 1062

I realize that this is political but it's from a baseball perspective so I thought it deserved a thread. Let's try to keep the conversation baseball related as much as possible. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/mlb-statement-on-arizona-senate-bill-1062?ymd=20140226&content_id=68381068&vkey=news_mlb What exactly might MLB be able to do? It's not as if they can pull the Diamondbacks out of Arizona with ease.

  19. Would an "opener" work in baseball?

I read this article and watched it discussed on Clubhouse Confidential. I think it's interesting. Having a relief pitcher start the game in the first inning and have your starter start the game in the second. http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/11/26/5144934/openers-bullpen-usage-closers-setup-men-weird-baseball-all-the-luke-hochevar

  20. Ralph Kiner, RIP

Ralph Kiner long time Mets announcer, Hall of famer and NL HR leader (or tied for the lead) in his first seven major league years of a ten year career passed away today at age 91. Kiner and Johnny Mize were the premier sluggers during Kiners ML career. Mize and Kiner shared the NL HR title in 1947 and 1948. Ralph will be missed. He was an early hero of mine Andy
