  1. Who am I?

I've played for New York, Detroit and Minnesota teams. I also spent a lot of time playing in Newark and even Tennessee, and also out of this country. I was born in Virginia a long time ago. I turned twenty in my first season of pro ball. I batted and threw right-handed. Some have called me diminutive. I was kind of bow-legged but that didn't matter ... cause many people think I was one of the best defensive third basemen in the history baseball - in any league. I was kind of flashy out...

  2. Fewest Career Wins Before Winning An ERA Title

Chris Sale and James Paxton are tied for the AL lead in ERA. Paxton started the year with 18 career wins. Has anybody won an ERA titled in a year he started with that few wins?

  6. Louis Arroyo is dead

For those of you too young to remember him, he was a very good relief pitcher for the Yankees in the early 1960's. In fact, in 1961 he had a 15 and 5 record and saved 29 games. Many of those saves were for Whitey Ford who probably would not have had over 20 wins that year without him. How many of you remember him or even saw him pitch?

Miguel Andujar and Tyler Wade did that tonight. Judge and Austin did it by homering last year. When else has it happened?

  8. Players Whose Only Career Win Was In Their MLB Debut

On September 29, 1993, Kenny Greer made his MLB debut with the Mets and got the win. It was his only career win, only game in 1993, and only career game with the Mets. Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) adds or subtracts a constant to make the average FIP equal the average ERA. Greer did not allow any baserunners in his inning in 1993, and http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/greerke01.shtml has him with an FIP of -1.01. Obviously it is impossible to have an ERA of -1.01.

  9. Leading MLB In Losses and Having Your ERA Double The Next Season

Shelby Miller led MLB with 17 losses in 2015. Last year his ERA more than doubled to above 6, and he didn't have enough innings to qualify. Does anybdoy know of a pitcher who led MLB in losses with enough innings to qualify (1 per team game) and then at least doubled his ERA the next season with at least 100 innings?

  10. Returnng Yankees With An MLB Debut Before A Career Yankee

The current Yankee who made the earliest MLB debut with the Yankees is Clippard, who left and came back. Does anybody know of another time when the Yankees roster included a player who made his MLB debut with the Yankees, left, came back, and had his MLB debut be before any player who had been with the Yankees his whole career until then?

  13. I channel Evan J with Babe Ruth question

Babe Ruth hit his first career home run on May 6, 1915 in the Polo Grounds against the Yankees' Jack Warhop. His second career homer came on June 2, 1915, also in the Polo Grounds .... against the self-same Jack Warhop (what a great name, Jack Warhop). Are there any other Hall of Famers whose first TWO career homers were off the same pitcher?

  14. Facing The Yankees In Your MLB Debut and Getting A Win or Save To End A World Series

On June 2, 2015, Mike Montgomery made has MLB debut against the Yankees. Montgomery allowed 1 earned run in 6 innings, and he was 1 out away from a win when Stephen Drew doubled to tie the game against Fernando Rodney. On November 2, 2016, Mike Montgomery got the save in the last game of the World Series. That was 519 days after his MLB debut. Can anybody find a pitcher who made his MLB debut against the Yankees and got a win or save in the last game of a World Series within 519 days of his...

In the last two games, Adam Warren and Blake Parker got wins, and Tommy Layne and Tyler Clippard got saves. Does anybody know of another time where a team won consecutive games with four pitchers getting wins or saves from those two games and all four pitchers had played for another MLB team earlier that year?

  17. Fewest Career Games To Reach Ten Teams Played For

Michael Kay said that Dana Eveland is warming up in the bullpen for Tampa Bay. I looked at his career statistics, and Tampa Bay is his tenth team. It took him only 155 games to play for ten teams. Does anybody know if another pitcher has pitched for ten teams within his first 155 or fewer games? Edit: baseball-reference says 41 players have played for at least ten teams. Eveland had the fewest games played to reach ten teams played for. The next fewest games was 184 for Ken Jarvis,...

  18. Three Players With 100+ RBI Having RBI In The Same Game Against The Yankees

Before Mookie Betts, David Ortiz, and Hanley Ramirez yesterday, does anybody know the last time (if it has ever happened) that three players had RBI in a game against the Yankees and all three of them ended the game with at least 100 RBI? Since the Yankees started in 1903 (they were the Highlanders then), there have been 134 team seasons with at least three players with at least 100 RBI. I can eliminate all team seasons in the NL until 2013 during which time there were no interleague games or...

  19. Pitch Count Estimating Formula

I read a formula to estimate pitch counts from before people kept track of them. The formula is 5.5 pitches per walk, 4.8 pitches per strikeout, and 3.3 pitches per any other plate appearance. I decided to test the formula, and it worked well. For Sabathia, the formula estimated 49,570 career pitches, and he threw 49,493, for a difference of 77, which is 0.16 percent of 49,493. For Kershaw, the formula predicted 26,505 pitches, and he threw 26,558, for a difference of 53, which is 0.20...

  20. Players With A Career-High In Their Last Season

In 2001, Paul O'Neill had a career-high 22 stolen bases. In 2008, Mike Mussina had a career-high 20 wins and a career-best (career-low) 1.4 walks per 9 innings. If the statistic is a rate statistic, the player must have had at least 1 inning or 3.1 plate appearances per team game to qualify.
