Discuss the rich history of baseball in here.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Great Baseball Photos (George H. Ruth's collection)

One of our newer forumers offered to share some photos, but didn't have enough posts to start a new one. Babe, this thread's for you -- post away. :)

  1. Who am I?

I've played for New York, Detroit and Minnesota teams. I also spent a lot of time playing in Newark and even Tennessee, and also out of this country. I was born in Virginia a long time ago. I turned twenty in my first season of pro ball. I batted and threw right-handed. Some have called me diminutive. I was kind of bow-legged but that didn't matter ... cause many people think I was one of the best defensive third basemen in the history baseball - in any league. I was kind of flashy out...

  2. Great Yankee photos

My Brooklyn Dodger fan dude is speaking to me again, at least by way of posting Yankee pix. A long drought, but here are some of the better ones. (check the famous Yankee and you'll recognize his name (hint: he once wore #6 for a year)) Lou Gehrig gently encouraging Babe Dahlgren in the dugout before Dahlgren replaced him as the Yankees' first baseman in Detroit. Gehrig removed himself from the lineup, snapping his consecutive-games-played streak at 2,130.

  3. The Best Nicknames In The World of Baseball

First let me say that the nickname his teammates used for him must of boosted his confidence immensely when he took the mound. In 1937, he led the NL in pitching appearances for Philadelphia with 56, of which 26 were starts... his name is Hugh Mulcahy. I could see it now when one of his teammates would ask the manager "Who's going for us today?" His nickname was "Losing Pitcher" :scared:

  4. Which player has the most World Series rings?

OK, you guys probably know the answer to this one, but you'd be surprised how many baseball fans (including Yankees fans) don't: Which ex-ballplayer has the most World Series rings? :)

  5. Negro League photos

I'll try getting more later on. This is just a start. Same Brooklyn fan supplying all my pix. Spectacular 19th century relic is a Negro League studio photo of the team in full uniform with equipment. Contrast is exceptional, as is the quality of the photo. On the mount below the photo is written the names of each player. At center is their white manager, Barker. Most intriguing is the lighting in the studio shot, turned way up onto their complexions, giving their skin a white glow. ...

  6. The endless trivia...

So.. the forum is also described as "This is also a good place for general baseball trivia..." So lets start a trivia... someone asks a question and if anybody answers to it correct, he (the oe who answered) may ask another question and so on... so it´ll never stop.... if it runs, as it´s planned :D Start with something really easy... Which Pitcher won the 2001 AL GG Award ?

  7. Favorite Sports Memorabilia you own

I'd be very interested to hear from other YANKEES fans that have some sort of YANKEES memorabilia. What is your favorite piece? Why? Mine is an autographed 8x10 of my all time favorite YANKEES player, Mickey Mantle. He autographed the photo at a local racetrack while working for one of the AC casinos. When my turn in line arrived, I could hardly contain myself, face to face with my hero. Although told in advance not to ask any questions, I said"Mr. Mantle, which World Series ring are you...

  9. Baseball Quotations

Phil Rizzuto "I'll never forget September sixth nineteen-fifty. I got a letter threatening me, Hank Bauer, Yogi Berra and Johnny Mize. It said if I showed up in uniform against the Red Sox I'd be shot. I turned the letter over to the FBI and told my manager Casey Stengel about it. You know what Casey did? He gave me a different uniform and gave mine to Billy Martin. Can you imagine that! Guess Casey thought it'd be better if Billy got shot."

  10. Great Yankee pix

An original Brooklyn Dodgers fan, who'd seen them in their glory days, posted these on another board. I figured I'd share. :) Yes, some of them are large, so please be patient if you've got an older PC + slow connection. Anyway, I think that some of these are irresistible, and here they are in no particular order: Site of Yankee Staduim 1922 Construction begins 1922

  11. Daily Yankees History

Note: I've decided it's too cumbersome to make it a huge string with one day added after another. I welcome feedback on that.-K On April 25, 1965, Mel Stottlemyre battled Rudy May of California in a scoreless duel won 1-0 by the Yanks on a fourth-inning Mickey Mantle home run. Two years later to the day, Whitey Ford beat the White Sox at the Stadium, 11-2. He surrendered eight hits and upped his record to 2-1. It was his last major league win. One year ago the Yanks ran into something...

  12. Home Runs were hit out of Yankee Stadium!

I took the Yankee Stadium tour last Sunday and the guide told us that he has been informed by the Yankees that Babe Ruth hit several HR's out of Yankees Stadium when he played for the team. This is very possible since the right-field triple deck stands were not built until 1938. He said there has been some research confirming this but would not go any further.

  15. Babe Ruth And Ground Rule Double HR's

I was listening to the Orioles-Red Sox game tonight and Joe Angel was talking about how in 1931 the NL changed the rule where balls that bounced over the outfield wall counted as a home run. Two years earlier in 1929 the AL had changed the rule. So my question is how many of Babe Ruth's home runs between 1915-1928 were actually ground rule doubles? Were there any statistics kept back then that differentiated between the two types of HR's?

  18. This Day in Baseball History

1999 ? Joe DiMaggio, baseball's "Greatest Living Player," dies at the age of 84 following a long illness. 1998 ? Yankees trade IF Andy Fox to the Diamondbacks in exchange for P Marty Janzen and Todd Erdos. 1966 ? 19. Players who won World Series Rings with 3 or more teams

I know of many players who won World Series Championships with 2 different teams, just thinking of Yankee players from the last 15 years like O'Neil, Gooden, Strawberry, Vizcaino, Justice, Polonia, Damon, El Duque, Canseco, Hinske have all won with 2 different teams, but I cant seem to think of anyone who has won with 3 different teams. Can anyone think of any players who won with 3 or more teams? Well I just changed my search phrase in Google again and found this: In the modern era,...
