Forum: History, Trivia & Memorabilia

Discuss the rich history of baseball in here.

  1. Some old photos

While looking through my memorabilia, I found these photos in an envelope at my parents house. I remember them from when I was younger, and one or two had my name and 3rd grade class on the back, so I must have used some for show and tell I guess. They are all press photos, some with captions. Some say "file photo" on the back, others had papers attached to them. The ones with info on the back (other than my name and class:)) have the backs scanned as well. All are actual photos on photo...

  3. Looking for a Paul O'Neill #21 Shirt

I have been looking for a Paulie O'Neill #21 Yankees shirt for a long time, and I haven't been able to find it. I tried Ebay and I was unsuccessful. I have also gone to the shops across the street from the Stadium and no one has it. Help me out...it is a gift for my old man. He was a huge O'Neill fan.

  5. 303-150

What would you give for a Yankee starter with that W/L record over a bunch of years? Well, that's the combined record in Pinstripes of southpaw Herb Pennock and fireballing righty Allie Reynolds, both born on this most fortuitous of Yankee days. The wily Ed Barrow knew he needed lefties for the House That Ruth Built, so he grabbed Pennock from Boston (the team from which he and The Babe had come) in time for the 1923 opener and never looked back. Reynolds ("Superchief") could throw it...

  8. Luis Tiant signing with the Yankees in 1978

Sorry this isn't a steroids related thread but... In Nov 1978 Luis Tiant signed with the Yankees - he'd been a Red Sox since 1971, and was there for all the Munson-Fisk, Fisk-Pinella, etc etc fights (and apparently cried after the 78 AL East playoff game). Not only did he sign with his team's arch-enemy, but it hasn't affected his legacy in Boston at all - but Boggs, Clemens, it did (Pedro it DEFINITELY would as well). Any reasons? Was it just because Steinbrenner gave him more money? He...

  10. "Ball Four", the TV show

I watched the pilot of this short-lived '70s sitcom based on the book at the Museum of Television & Radio this afternoon, and, coming from someone who worships that book, can totally see why it flopped after like four episodes or something. The theme song, for one thing, really sucked. Most of the jokes -- which were definitely inspired by some of the ones in the book -- kind of fell flat. And since it essentially took place almost entirely within the clubhouse it didn't exactly move the way...

  12. 1/3: Anniversary of the babe to Ny

As I saw today in the daily news, today is the anniversary that ruth was sold to the yanks. I guess this isn't as important, with the curse being broken. But still a good day in yankee history

  16. best second baseman in baseball history

I know it's hard to consider who would be the best ever, as baseball eras are vastly different.....but if you had to pick ONE second baseman for your all-time best lineup, who would you pick?

  18. Tommy John a 2005 candidate for Cooperstown

Even though he's much more known for a certain operation in 1974, he also pitched for 26 seasons and 7 US Presidents, is 24th on the all-time wins list at 288. Here's an ESPN.com/Baseball Prospectus Interview with Dr Frank Jobe. The pic and the story: Tommy John has the most victories of any pitcher not enshrined at Cooperstown.

  20. Gehrig's streak did not begin with Wally Pipp's "headache"?!

Apparently, the infamous batting-practice beaning that forced Pipp to sit out several games didn't occur until a month after the streak began. Yeah, I can't believe it either. Is EVERYTHING going topsy-turvy these days???:scared: http://www.snopes.com/sports/baseball/pipp.asp
