  2. The Glory of their Times

I've been plugging this book lately-it is a wonderful book about baseball at the turn of the century- Lawrence Ritter travelled around the country tracking down old ball players and recording their stories before they died. it is a fascinating account of their times and the way the game was played. Among the players he interviewed are Rube Marquard, Tommy Leach. Davy Jones, Sam Crawford, Fred Snodgrass, Smoky joe Wood, Chief Meyers, Bill Wambsganss, Goose Goslin, & Hank Greenberg. There...

  4. GREAT MANTLE ARTICLE: legend began and almost ended in KC - KC Star

http://www.kcstar.com/item/pages/sports.pat,sports/3acce38d.811,.html Mantle's legend began -- and almost ended -- 50 years ago in KC By JOE POSNANSKI - Columnist Date: 08/11/01 Mutt Mantle knew the day would come. That's why he came up to Kansas City in the first place. He was, in many ways, a simple Oklahoma man, a farmer, a miner, not much in tune with the cosmopolitan ways of the world. The story goes that on his one trip to New York, Mutt Mantle saw the statue of Atlas in front...

  5. Ruth & Gehrig records

This is a question I don't know the answer to, but have tride to find out. I know both Ruth and Gehrig held a lot of records that since have been broken, but I wonder how many records Ruth and Gehrig held at the time they retired? I think Ruth still holds a record for some pitching feat in the WS. :)

  7. Did you know...?

We all know that Babe Ruth started his career as a pitcher and was a fulll time outfielder by the time he was sold to the Yankees... But did you know that he made two mound appearances for the Yankees ?!?... Below is a rare photo of him in one of those appearances. A complete game, 6-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox, October 1, 1933...

  9. stadium question

This is a picture of the Stadium during the 1926 World Series against the Cardinals. You can see that the stands end not too far from third base. Or maybe it just appears that way. They certainly don't wrap around the outfield as they do today, but I don't see the bullpen either. As a matter of fact the sections are labeled 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 down that side. Was the stadium finished by 1926? Anyone know what's going on here? Thanks.

  10. Streak

Last year the Yankees lost 15 out of their last 18 games at the end of the season, the last 7 in a row. What was the longest winning streak a Yankees team had ending a regular season that led to a world series? What year was it?

  13. Guess This Yankee from the Past Part 3

Slippery Elm guessed the last "Guess this Yankee" right off the bat. It was Mike Gazella. I hope this one is harder to guess. Could not find a photo this time, but I have a baseball card of this guy and scanned that. For those familiar with the card I did edit out his name. Hints: The card is a 1911 Turkey Red Cabinet. Which would be his 1910 season. First regular Yankee catcher. Good Luck!

If the Blosux didn't know that Babe died today that is >>>> Their best manager in 40 years gets fired on the day that Babe Ruth died !!! Babe died on Aug 16, 1948... Kerrigan will not have control of this team, pitching coaches usually make horrible managers, just saw that on MSG,,

  19. On comparing players

On comparing players. This is my opinion on the process of comparing players from one era to another. I don't think it is possible to compare the players from one era to another era ( ie pre 1950 to post 1950) and other time frames as well, because there is no one alive at the present time that has seen those people play. They would had to have been a contemporary say around 20 years old with enough Baseball expertise (sports writers) to evaluate the level of play and seen them perform for...
