  3. There be Highlanders here !!

1903: A peace summit commences between the American and National Leagues in an attempt to unite the two under similar rules, and establish a “World Series”. AL President Ban Johnson lets it known he wants a team in New York. Johnson got 15 of the 16 Major League owners to agree the lone dissenter was John T. Bush owner of the New York Giants. Johnson arranged to have Frank Farrell and Bill Devery buy the struggling Baltimore Orioles and move them to Manhattan. January 9, 1903 Frank...

  5. 37 Pennants

In the "win all" culture of today's society, I have come to feel that the pennants The Yankees won, but did not lead to Series victories get more and more overlooked. Being the "League Champion" is still quite an accomplishment. It is not like the other sports. People do remember who lost the series. Ask the '51 Giants, '67 Red Sox, the Boys of Summer, and even The Yankees of the '20's. Thier WS record was 3 - 3. yet they laid the foundation for the Dynasty. True to validate a great...

  13. Who am I

I was one of the least heralded of the great pitchers, 187-117 in late teens through '20s. I threw together four consecutive 20-win campaigns for the St Louis Browns, including an AL best 27-12 in 1921. I had a very quiet, intense and serious demeanor. Although I was known as A finesse pitcher, I threw a legal spitball. I also had a bent finger from my days as a catcher which I think helped my pitching. I Spent 1925-28 with the Yankees. Who am I ?

  14. Historical Interlude # 1

Pinch-hitters shined in the 1947 World Series... Cookie Lavagetto got the most memorable pinch-hit of that fall classic. His double, with 2 outs in the 9th inning of game 4, broke up Bill Beven's no-hitter and gave the Dodgers a 3-2 victory. But the Yankees had their pinch-hitting heroes too ! In game three, Yogi Berra, a rookie, hit the first pinch-hit home run in World Series history !! !! The "Golden Boy" tag, however went to another Yankee rookie, Bobby Brown. He hit safely in his...

  19. Appreciate a response from anyone who saw Bill Dickey play.

I was not fortunate enough to see Bill Dickey play.....I would appreciate any descriptions of him as a hitter/player that anyone who watched him would care to make. Perhaps, of the great Yankees, I know less of him than anyone.......Thanks.
