  1. A near fatal beaning at Yankee Stadium

It brought back memories of 1920 with the death of Ray Chapman who was beaned by Yankee righthander Carl Mays. This occurred in 1937. Other than the Yankees,Name the opposing team? Who was the pitcher? Who got beaned?

This was the 7th inning of the 7th game of the 1952 World Series. the Dodgers had the bases loaded with two out.The Yanks were leading 4-2. Jackie Robinson was up, he swings and hits a sky high pop up to the infield.it was late afternoon, the sun was on the right side of the infield.Yogi yells for Joe Collins to make the catch, but Collins never moves,he loses the ball in the sun. However, from his position on the edge of the outfield grass the great Yankee come rushing in to make a shoestring...

  4. August 16th 1920...

Carl Mays was a right-handed pitcher who had first come up with the Boston Red Sox in 1915 and immediately established himself as a winning pitcher. Standing just under 6 feet and weighing 195 pounds, he was a submarine sinkerballer who sometimes scraped his knuckles across the mound as he followed through his motion. He had the habit of throwing inside to batters to brush them off, and was always among the leaders when it came to hit batsmen. He was also a surly, mean spirited individual who...

  5. Urban Shocker's Obituary

This is copy of Urban Shocker's Obituary from The New York Times, September 11, 1928. I did not know he tried playing semi pro after his last stint with the Yankees. It's hard to read I had to shrink to make the file size limit.

  9. On comparing players

On comparing players. This is my opinion on the process of comparing players from one era to another. I don't think it is possible to compare the players from one era to another era ( ie pre 1950 to post 1950) and other time frames as well, because there is no one alive at the present time that has seen those people play. They would had to have been a contemporary say around 20 years old with enough Baseball expertise (sports writers) to evaluate the level of play and seen them perform for...

  15. Guess This Yankee from the Past Part 3

Slippery Elm guessed the last "Guess this Yankee" right off the bat. It was Mike Gazella. I hope this one is harder to guess. Could not find a photo this time, but I have a baseball card of this guy and scanned that. For those familiar with the card I did edit out his name. Hints: The card is a 1911 Turkey Red Cabinet. Which would be his 1910 season. First regular Yankee catcher. Good Luck!

  16. George Halas

Papa Bear himself...Player-coach-owner of Chicago Bears from 1920-83; signed Red Grange in 1925; coached Bears for 40 seasons and won 8 NFL titles (1921,32-33,40-41,43,46,63); 2nd on all-time career list with 324 wins; elected to NFL Hall of Fame in 1963... Football ?!? What does Chicago Bears Football have to do with Yankees History ?!? Well, before he became "Papa Bear", George Halas wore YANKEES PINSTRIPES !! In 1919, he appeared in 12 games as an outfielder !! Below is a rare...

Last year the Yankees lost 15 out of their last 18 games at the end of the season, the last 7 in a row. What was the longest winning streak a Yankees team had ending a regular season that led to a world series? What year was it?

  19. stadium question

This is a picture of the Stadium during the 1926 World Series against the Cardinals. You can see that the stands end not too far from third base. Or maybe it just appears that way. They certainly don't wrap around the outfield as they do today, but I don't see the bullpen either. As a matter of fact the sections are labeled 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 down that side. Was the stadium finished by 1926? Anyone know what's going on here? Thanks.
