Forum: History, Trivia & Memorabilia

Discuss the rich history of baseball in here.

  1. Anyone here remember RHP Ralph Terry?

I'm sure some of you will remember his name, which came up a lot with Bill Maserowski's HOF induction. Terry was the Yankee pitcher who gave up Maserowski's WS winning home run in game 7 of the 1960 series, one in which the Yankees outscored the Pirates by a wide margin, but still managed to lose four in the best of seven ... it would appear the experience was far from a crushing one for Terry and the Yankees (the Mantle/Maris Yankees) as Terry came back to win 16 games in '61 and 23 in '62...

  2. Matty Alou is Dead

This baseball player, a Yankee for one year in 1973, when he batted .296 was best known as being the third of three brothers who played in the majors. He also had a memorable World Series as a Giant against the Yankees in 1963. Rest in peace, Matty.

  3. The Pitcher Who Hits

As some of you here know I love hitting and offense. I was checking out Red Ruffing on Wikipedia and found this interesting tidbit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Ruffing Ruffing also hit 36 homeruns and batted .269 in 1937 career at bats. And the name is just cool kinda like the Red Baron. Cheers

  4. Any way to get information on a mid-80s Old Timer's Day?

I was at the 1984 Old Timer's Game at the Stadium. That's the one where Elston Howard and Roger Maris has their numbers retired. I was still a teenager then and did not have the foresight to keep a good record for myself as to who was there that afternoon. I do remember that the Yankee Old Timers played against an assortment of Old Timers from other teams, including coaches from the Minnesota Twins who were in that day. I also remember that the Yankee Old Timers won their "game" 1-0, on...

  11. Rookies With A Winning Percentage Of .800 Or Better

If Ivan Nova pitches at least 3 more innings (to make 1 inning per team game) and doesn't get any more losses, he will have a winning percentage of .800 or better and will have the highest winning percentage by a Yankee since Roger Clemens's Cy Young season in 2001. Who was the last rookie (if ever) to have a winning percentage of .800 or better and what is the rookie winning percentage record with 1 inning per team game required for each question? Wikipedia has Ron Davis with the Yankees in...

  14. 1 Pitch, 1 Win - No pitch, 1 win?

Yesterday David Robertson threw 1 pitch, recorded 2 outs and was credited with a win. Does this tie the record of fewest pitches thrown in a win? I'm sure that has happened numerous times through out the history of baseball. But has any pitcher recored an out without throwing a pitch and also recored a victory? Maybe came in with 2 outs and a runner on first, picked the guy off first without throwing a pitch home and his team rallied to get him a win? Does any know if this has...

Today's Yankee game will start when Kyle Hudson bats. Hudson is 0-for-3 in his career and has 3,066 fewer carer hits than Jeter. Can anybody find a box score of a game where the gap of career hits going into the game between the two leadoff hitters was bigger than that?

  20. Have Yankee Teammates Ever Finished First and Second In The AL In Home Runs and RBIs?

Have Yankee teammates ever finished first and second in the AL in home runs and RBIs (not necessarily in the same order, but it has to be the same two players in both)? Granderson and Teixeira could do that.
