  1. HBO..The Young Pope

If you have watched this new series on HBO....what are your feelings about this. I wonder what the Roman Catholic Church feels about this series? I am having a hard time understanding the direction it is going. However, the scenery is beautiful.

  5. Super Bowl

Atlanta kicked away the Suoer Bowl with one of the dumbest pieces of decision making I've seen in a long time. With the ball on the 20 in the 4th quarter and an 8 point lead, the Falcons decided to pass and Ryan got sacked on the 35. Everything we know about basic football says to run the ball right there a couple of downs and then kick the field goal on 3rd or 4th down. A field goal was all they needed to put the game out of reach. A pass play was pointless in that situation. I can't believe...

  6. MLK, Jr.

Usually I quote either "unearned suffering" or "dangerous unselfishness." But in light of the conversations some of us have been having over the last year, in response to the idea that racism is over because we had eight years of a black president, and to counter the image that MLK believed that the antidote for racism was simply to stop looking at skin color:

  7. Hunting and Guns

Nerf was speaking to gun recommendations in the Trump thread. Figured this deserved a thread of it's own. I've recently decided I'd like to shoot an animal. Preferably an Elk because I enjoy the meat. I've always been rather opposed to guns, not because of any ideas on gun laws, but just because I didn't feel very safe when I was using them. My only shooting experience was going to an abandoned military base up in Alaska over 10yrs ago, and shooting like 9 different guns, rifles, handguns,...

  8. Funny Baseball Anecdotes

With pitchers and catchers reporting soon it's time for some baseball convo fun. I do not know if this fits, but one of the funniest things I ever heard an announcer say during a telecast was: Skip Caray, while doing a Braves telecast when a pitcher was walking the ballpark "and he walks him, the bases are loaded again and I wish I was"

  10. Election 2016

Maynerd has given permission to start this thread, so long as it discusses current events. Don't start name-calling candidates or each other, or it will get shut down. Don't be buttheads and ruin it, please. Apparently the GOP is planning for a brokered convention, since they have so many candidates. Personally, I'm still hoping that DT runs as an independent. That would be epic. http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/10/politics/rnc-brokered-convention-preparation/index.html

  11. Express Your Hope Or Trepidations About Our Future With Trump

This pretty much says it for me: The nation is soon to be under the aegis of an unstable, unqualified, undignified demagogue and with Republicans in control of both houses of Congress, there is little that can be done to constrict or control his power and unpredictability. Its like seeing an ominous weight swinging toward a limb, sure to break it, while you feel utterly helpless to prevent the fracture. As the exiting first lady Michelle Obama told Oprah last week: Were feeling...

  12. Joke of the Day

It's a long off season with no baseball, and it's a long season when it's back on. So, any time is a good time for jokes. I wish I could tell you all that I knew a lot of them, but I don't. I am good at laughing, though. Post the ones that have made you laugh. I guess we have to keep them pretty clean, but let the good times roll.

  13. Mayor Hillary Clinton?

I can't quite see her stomping all over Trump if she were mayor, but the thought is delightful and I'd vote for her. From political circles in New York City to cocktail parties on Capitol Hill, on right-of-center Facebook pages and among left-of-center donors, two of the biggest untethered threads in New York politics are being drawn together around a single question. Would Hillary Clinton run for mayor? The prospect has an obvious, novelistic allure: A run for mayor of New York this...

  17. Is This Possible for the US?

Some years ago, I faced up to the futility of reporting true things about America’s disastrous wars and so I left Afghanistan for another remote mountainous country far away. It was the polar opposite of Afghanistan: a peaceful, prosperous land where nearly everybody seemed to enjoy a good life, on the job and in the family. It’s true that they didn’t work much, not by American standards anyway. In the US, full-time salaried workers supposedly laboring 40 hours a week actually average 49,...
