There goes our hopes of getting Hairston (and the Orioles won't trade Roberts now that he has to start at 2b).

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jerry Hairston broke his right ring finger Thursday in an exhibition game against the Florida Marlins, leaving his status for opening day in doubt.

The injury occurred in the first inning of the Orioles' first game of spring. Hairston hit a leadoff single against Josh Beckett, stole second base and then broke a bone in his knuckle while stealing third.

Hairston eventually scored, but was pulled from the game and sent to a hand specialist.

If surgery is required, Hairston almost certainly will miss the Orioles' opener on April 4 against the Boston Red Sox.

Now he will be available at a cheaper price. Good luck for us, if not for Hairston.

i still say we go after him. A broken ringer isnt really a serious injury, he'll be back soon.

I think the Yanks probably aren't going after him.

i say go for him anyway. a month is nothing when you consider that the season sarts in a month and we can play a platoon there in the beginning of the season with no problem. as long as he can run and field it will be a big plus

I wish Hairston a speedy recovery.

After a month of Enrique Wilson starting at second, Hairston would probably look great.

Initially a trade for Hairston to fill the Yanks void at 2b seemed reasonable. Now, however, given this Hairston's history of fracturing bones--- he broke his foot last year and missed most of the season--- it seems like a better judgement to look elsewhere to fill that spot.

Like I said in another thread, we have more than enough offense to hold down the fort at 2B with the trio of Wilson/Cairo/Bush defensively. If necessary, we can cherry-pick a better 2B alternative at the trade deadlines, when there is more likely to be buyer's market, from fading clubs, like Montreal or Atlanta.

Besides, why waste prospects on such a low priority need, when we might need them down the line to acquire pitching help, given all of the question marks about the fragility and age of 60% of our starting staff, namely Leiber, Contreras and Brown.

GO:NY:!!!

Hopefully it will be a month of Miguel Cairo or Homer Bush starting...

a broken finger is very painful (I broke mine at a concert once).

I wish him a speedy recovery.

If it was an open, fair competition, you'd get your wish. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

He means that Joe Torre is going to give the job to Wilson.

He has already said as much several times.

According to Yahoo!, who cited
mlb.com as their source, Hairston had an electrocardiogram on Thurs. Something "not right"
showed up on routine examination.
The Orioles said they could not comment until the test had been
analyzed by physcians. Hopefully
it is nothing but a faulty reading by the equipment.
