View Full Version : Ron Guidry's 25-3 Season

My other post about the 1978 season reminded me of Ron Guidry's 25-3 season that year. It was and still is the best year that a pitcher has ever had. His winning percentage of .893 is the highest ever by a 20 game winner.

Anyway, I wanted to share this silly little thing I do with all of you.
You know how the members of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins get together every year and celebrate with champaign after the last undefeated team in the NFL finally goes down in defeat? Well, I secretly breath a sigh of relief and celebrate every year when the last potential 20 game winner finally loses his 4th game! I know it's dumb, but that 1978 season was very personal and special to me. My other post about that season will explain why.

Anyway, here are the closest calls to breaking Louisiana Lightning's miracle season.

1978: Ron Guidry 25-3 .893

2001: Roger Clemens 20-3 .869

2000: Pedro Martinez 23-4 .852

1986: Roger Clemens 24-4 .857

1985: Doc Gooden 24-4 .857

I am sure I've left some other notables off this list. Can you add some others here? Please do.

Randy Johnson was 20-4 in 1997.

Coney was 20-3 in 1988 with the Mets.

Mike Hampton was 22-4 in 1999.

I don't know when those losses came (as in, maybe Coney was 2-3 and then won his next 18 decisions), but these are the only ones I was able to find . . . (OK, I cheated!! ;))
