The @Yankees today announced they acquired minor league LHP Reiver Sanmartin from Texas in exchange for RHP Ronald Herrera.

LHP who walks nobody, really low FIP, non-exciting K numbers, will be 22 next season.

Sounds like making room on the 40 man.

Appears to be a guy with some upside/development left, but a nice foundation already.

After two years in the Dominican Summer League, Sanmartin has jumped to the Low-A South Atlantic League this season. Sanmartin, 21, has a small frame at 5 feet 10 and 160 pounds. He has a low-90s mph fastball that sinks and complements it with a good changeup. The key to Sanmartin’s success is his ability to repeat a good delivery and throw strikes. For the season, he has 44 strikeouts with only five walks in 50 2/3 innings. Good athlete and high baseball IQ.

Reiver Sanmartin is a Colombian lefty. Was 87-90 with an average change and slider for me during instructional league. Low arm slot means there's relief risk, otherwise a 5th/6th starter assuming no uptick in velo.

earthshattering news

How many more years of control does he have before needing to place on the 40?

Reiver Sanmartin wiry, athlete build with some length relative to build. Limited leverage with whippy stroke, decent arm speed. Cross body. Competitor, advanced feel with lefty action; goes backwards. CH on hands, north/south. Plays up

He's a 2015 IFA signing, but was 19 so I think he has to be protected in 2019.

Yanks would have been better off retaining Herrera and releasing Gallegos, Cooper, Mitchell, etc. Herrara is only 22 and has already pitched in the bigs.

#Rangers LHP prospect Reiver Sanmartin is making his 1st start in Low-A. Sitting 87-89 with fringe armside mov, SL flashes tilt...

Liked my 1st look at #Rangers wiry LHP Reiver Sanmartin. Loose delivery, really attacked hitters w/ 87-91 mph FB.

Sounds like a LOOGY in the future. Not that I would complain.

Liked to have gotten more for Herrera, but I suppose we could have just lost him for nothing..

Exactly, thank you.

Herrera only pitched in the bigs last year because NY had no other real options already on the 40 man roster at the time. He is in the category of Zach Littell and Yefry Ramirez, promising SPs who have to be on the 40 man and who were blocked by a ton of guys ahead of them, so better to move them if possible and clear the spot.
