"SF Gate: As refuse to remove tarp, cite intimate fan experience

.

Most teams try to sell as many tickets as they can, especially during the playoffs. The Oakland Athletics have a different philosophy. As management said Friday they plan not to sell 20,878 of the Coliseums 55,945 seats next week for the As division showdown with the Detroit Tigers. Those seats account for 37 percent of the Coliseums baseball seating capacity and As management has sealed then off with tarps since 2006 due to low attendance.

But now the Oakland As are drawing sold-out crowds. So many fans showed up for the last game of the season Wednesday that As management warned people to stay away because there were no tickets left.

Fans are demanding that the team remove the tarps to let more people in - some have started a petition via a website called Removethetarps.com. Many have pelted As management with complaints.

On Friday As management explained to The Chronicle why they would not remove the tarps.

A smaller crowd, As managers said, would create a closer, more intimate environment for the American League Division Series.

The fan experience is better without spreading fans out over more seats, As managers wrote in an e-mail. The energy in the park and the fan experience over the last week (when the seats were tarped) was incredible."

^^^ That makes no freakin' sense. At all.

When have you ever seen a business find a way to abandon both its imperative to maximize revenue and its customers' express wishes at the same time?

Maybe the owners don't want to spoil their getaway plans

I was there during the late 80's early 90's whne they were very good and they got great support in spite of the horrible stadium ( which appears to be worse now after football remodeling )

Makes no sense at all

I imagine we're going to see a lot of strikeouts by As batters. Top two pitchers in Ks in the league against the team that struck out the most times in a season...ever? Yikes.

Never heard of turning down cash. I remember for ALCS game 6 and 7 in 2008, the Rays pulled off the upper tarps even though they knew they likely were letting thousands of Sox fans into the building

I really was convinced this was an Onion article. Seriously the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

It's probably along the lines of what the Yankees do, albeit on a totally different scale.

The Yankees, it's pretty obvious, think they are leaving money on the table when have 100% sellouts. They try to maximize ticket prices to the point where they are just under 100% sold out...and in the process take in more revenue.

With the A's, it's obviously the complete other end of the spectrum in terms of market size and demand, but if they keep availability low, they can charge more over the long run for the inventory.

It's a shame to see tarps over the top of the stadium for playoff games, but I do remember those 2001 playoffs against the Yanks, in the deciding game, where the upper deck was half empty...it did look ugly and it likely dragged on the prices they could charge

What I don't understand is why baseball buries Game 2 of the A's and Tigers on the MLB channel. I get the MLB channel on one of my three tv's. Wifey is watching the one I need. The local sports bar..which is normally great...couldn't find it and the whole thing will get swamped by the NFL even with the 12:00 start time.

Baseball seems intent on making its playoffs along the lines of the NHL. TBS is remote enough, but at least people know it by now.

Where did you view yesterday's game? TBS showed movies beginning at noon and didn't begin play-off coverage until the Nats/Cards game. They kepy showing a little "promo box" in the lower lefthand corner stating that MLB was next. TNT wasn't carrying it either. :dunno:

A couple of times during the Nats/Cards game, the picture and sound went off with a "no signal" message on the screen.

That's really cool if it is on your cable. Here, you need to have satellite. Sometimes when ESPN advertises the Monday or Wednesday night game and the Yankees are playing, we get ESPNU instead. ESPN Classic isn't part of the cable package either.

He makes some bone headed reads on balls that make granderson look like gold glover but the dude does go all out and has an absolute cannon of an arm. I think he actually plays a better left field than center field which was supposedly his natural position in Cuba.

At the plate, how could you not be impressed. The sound off his bat is one of those special sounds that most hitters can only dream of.

I agree that smart money would be on this but in one game - as Juaquin Andujar was wont to say - "One word, youneverknow."

Griffin has been dreadful of late. He started the final v Texas and had to be pulled early after the A's were down 5-0 but if he picthes like he did when he first came up, he can be lights out. I would guess Blackley would be up at the first sine of early trouble much like how Bochey went throu 4 picthers by the 4th inning today.

It will be interesting to see how Sherzer's shoulder responds tonight. I have to think if he was a 100% he would have gotten the ball in game 3.

Yeah, but it remains to be seen what kind of an advantage that is.

Yes, if we win tonight, we would have CC vs not-Verlander if it's the Tigers in Game 1. Verlander could go in Game 2 on short rest or Game 3 and potentially Game 7. Of course, only 6 ALCS have gone 7 games since the switch in 1985 to the best-of-seven format so it could mean only facing Verlander once.

Either way, the Yankees have to win tonight!

I don't think it's a huge deal anyway as we are unlikely to use CC more than twice. So we will have a huge advantage in games 1 and 5, they will in 3 and 7 (if it goes 7).

Yes, which means if we win his two starts, and lose G3, we would have a 2-1 advantage and only need to win 2 of 4, while Detroit would have to win 3 of 4.

Well in another thread I predicted A's would get 10 Ks but hit 4 HRs off Verlander in Game 1. 11Ks & 1 HR so 1 out of 2. I'll double down and say the Verlander Ks 10 over 6 IP but the A's do hit those 4 HRs this time at the O.co.

I eluded to it last night before Crisp delivered that walk-off base hit ...

IMO Bob Melvin dodged a bullet and he owes Crisp a steak dinner for getting him off the hook.

After that two run double to tie it at 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th, the A's had a runner on 2nd with no outs.

Thats the winning run for the home team and you gotta bunt that guy over to 3rd with less than two outs, to give yourself a chance to win that game in a variety of ways and without needing another hit to win it.

I couldn't believe Melvin didn't put on the bunt in that spot, and of course the hitter popped up and failed to move the runner, which then meant they would need another hit in that inning to win the game.

Crisp delivered that hit and made it all moot, but I think that was a brain-lock by Melvin and there would have been some serious second guessing if Oakland had lost that game.

Believe it or not, I actually agree with this. The one situation in which it makes sense to bunt is when you only need one run, and you have a man on second with no outs. Man on third with one out is actually more likely to score at least one run than man on second with no outs. I don't think there's another situation in which bunting is appropriate, but in this one, it is.

Sometimes it works, but I'd rather swing away in that spot than have a runner on 2nd with one out. The only time I like to bunt is in a situation like last night, one run wins the game or puts you ahead and you are moving a runner from 2nd to 3rd with no outs. In that case you have to give them an out to put the winning or go-ahead run on 3rd with a drawn in infield.

I too was surprised by the non-bunt but maybe he figured BUC Kottaras wasn't a good bunter and as a left handed hitter a ground ball to 2B or FB to medium deep RF/RCF gets Smith to 3rd on a tag. Also he had Pennington on deck who hasn't exactly lit it up at the plate. My move would have been to bunt but I think taking 3 chances to get a hit is defensible there, and as I pointed out a sac bunt isn't the only way to move the guy to 3rd on an out.

edit: in his MLB career Kottaras has 4 PA bunts. He's 0-1 with 3 SAC. Probably if Penningtn is the hitter with none out he bunts.

Not poking fun ... but have you signed up to follow every person even remotely associated with the Yankees organization? I wouldn't even think to look for David Aardsma on Twitter.

Aardsma's tweets appear on the Lohud blog. I've been following him all season and he is very entertaining.

Sorry Oakland. You gave it a good ride!

2 teams decided, 2 teams to go.
