Considering that it's Miami, they could have been a lot worse. I'm never a fan of any team's alternate jerseys, but their home whites and road grays are OK with me.

The black and grey ones were OK.

You don't need any particular color scheme, pattern or design. All you need is a fashion designer who wasn't asleep at the wheel when they designed the uni.

Changing the name to Miami was part of the stadium deal rather than a club decision. I still wish that the NJSEA had done that with the Giants and Jets.

HelloNewman
11-15-11, 02:08 PM
If the Giants and Jets were amenable to having their branding changed to "New Jersey," I'm sure it would have happened by now, since they've both played there for more than a quarter century. Obviously they're not. I seriously doubt the Marlins had much problem changing from "Florida" to "Miami," since that's simply a choice between the regional approach that was still trendy in the 1990s and the localized approach that's more popular now, rather than a choice between 2 distinct geographical entities.

The new Miami jerseys are not as bad as most people are making them out to be except for the ORANGE one, that orange one looks like a clown uniform. Geez, lets see a little class here.

As to the name change, i hate a team not identified with a city, they should have been called MIAMI right from the start, i am glad they finally are using the MIAMI name. As to the Giants and Jets, years ago New Jersey tried to get them to use the New Jersey name and they both refused. Lets be realistic, teams want to be identified with New York, not New Jersey.

The Giants and Jets should be called the East Rutherford Giants and the East Rutherford Jets. Let's face it, they don't play in the city of New York so they don't deserve to include that great city in their name.

It was probably a money based decision, since The city of Miami and Miami-Dade County are paying for $360M worth of the $515M price tag of the new stadium. I have a feeling they were told to show a little more 'city pride' in their name and on their uniforms if they were getting that kind of financial help from "Miami" sources, not Florida.

But enough about the Financial District.

It's entirely different from the Giants/Jets situation.

San Diego, Baltimore and the Mets all updated their uniforms/logos this year too. Toronto introduces new uniforms tomorrow.

San Diego updated their logos to bring back the friar and went to just navy/white

Mets dropped the black and have the classic blue/orange plus the "old white/cream stripped" uniform again next year.

The orioles went back to the 80's and brought back the cartoon bird and the white panel front caps.

SO you have a problem with the Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, New Jersey Nets, Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz, Minnesota Timerwolves, Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, and Colorado Avalanche? (Hope I didn't leave anyone out...)

One could argue the New York Islanders were named after the state, because they do not play in NYC, and their logo includes Long Island.

Some of them are ridiculous... Like Golden State, New England, and both Carolina's.

Some are actually very good. For example Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies and Florida Panthers are all great because the State name is an identifier in for an actual place, person or thing.

How do you figure that? In 1903, every single team was named for the CITY they were in, not the state.

You had Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, St Louis, Chicago, Washington and the Yankees in the AL; Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cincinnati, Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia, St Louis and the Giants in the NL.

Brooklyn was its own city when the Dodgers were formed in 1884.

New York City was created in 1898, chances are that the Yankees named themselves after this new City, in addition to playing in New York County.

You had the Philadelphia A's (founded 1901) and Philadelphia Phillies (founded 1883); Chicago Cubs (founded 1876) and Chicago White Sox (Founded 1901); St Louis Browns (moved to STL in 1902) and St Louis Cardinals (founded 1882).

Why are those teams named after the same city, but you think the NY Giants were for NYC and the NYY were for NY State? Shouldn't it have been the Pennsylvania Athletics, Illinois White Sox and Missouri Browns, by your theory?

I wanna say, but I'm not at all sure, that those other teams were originated in those cities where the Yankees were not. They were originated in Baltimore.

Of course, this is going by what I think I remember.

I wanna say, but I'm not at all sure, that those other teams were originated in those cities where the Yankees were not. They were originated in Baltimore. The St. Louis Browns moved to St. Louis in 1902 after spending 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Yankees' franchise was always intended for New York City but had to use Baltimore as a way-station for a few years because the Giants were using their connections in Tammany Hall to redline them out of the city. Once that political bump in the road was smoothed over (or gotten around sneakily, depending on which story you believe) the Highlanders-Yankees moved in. They represent New York City.

My theory, which is obviously erroneous, had the Mets as an NYC representative because the Giants had already moved out and the Yankees were the New York State Yankees.
So it was the NYC Mets.

I don't remember where I got this theory from. I may have just made it up in my head when I was a kid.
