The Blue Jays acquired shortstop Yunel Escobar (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/escobyu01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) and pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reyesjo03.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) from the Braves for shortstop Alex Gonzalez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Alex+Gonzalez&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) and minor leaguers Tim Collins (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker&id=collin004tim) and Tyler Pastronicky, according to a team press release. The Jays designated Ronald Uviedo (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker&id=uviedo001ron) for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Good trade for Toronto.

I don't know, Yunel is not good and has a bad attitude.

Yunel is struggling this year, but he's put up an OPS+ of 118 and 116 in 2 of the past 3 years. I think the Braves are giving up on him way too early. Meanwhile, Gonzalez is putting up his FIRST year of better-than-average offense, despite being in the league since 1998. Terrible trade.

Apparently, he (Escobar) plays some pretty good D too. I'm a little thrown off by this.

I don't know, Yunel is not good and has a bad attitude. It is a really good sell high/buy low deal.

Escobar is young - relatively cheap - plays good d and has a solid though not spectacular bat and is having a down year offensively.

Toronto is going nowhere this year and Gonzalez is having a HR spree he won't keep up and cost money that could be better allocated elsewhere.

Reyes was a former hot prospect, maybe a change of scenery does him good, if not no big deal.

I don't know anything about the prospects Toronto is sending to Atl, they any good?

Read something about Escobar basically being viewed as an attention whore type earlier in the week, can't find the article. Don't know how much that played into, but eh.

Thought the Sox were going after him...

If I recall right, Bobby Cox has expressed exasperation with Escobar's attitude/effort more than a few times. I'm guessing he told the GM, "I've got one half-season left as a manager and I'm not going to spend it looking at Yunel Escobar."

Whether this move comes back to bite the Braves after Cox is gone, we'll have to see.

I give it to the Braves.

war varies a ton based on where you set that replacement level. who is the best ss prospect for the braves?

Edward Salcedo I think, but he's only 18 and years from the bigs.

One of the prospects they got back is a middle IFer I think. No clue if he's any good.

I'm going ahead and calling Toronto win on this one. The Braves gave up a player that (at his worst) hits like Alex Gonzalez (based on his career) for a player that (at his unsustainable, flukey best) hits ALMOST as well as Yunel (based on his career).

Yunel wOBA for past three years: .367, .337, .357
Yunel wOBA for 2010: .291

AG wOBA for career: .299
AG wOBA for 2010: .341

The BJ's announcers were fawning over Gonzalez when I watched their games last week. They felt he should have been an All Star.....FWIW.

The early returns on this trade are heavily in favor of Toronto (obviously, it's way too early to say for sure).

Escobar with Jays: OPS of 1.192
Gonzalez with Braves: OPS of .683 (right around career norm)

Tim Collins made baseballamerica's all mid-season team, he pushes this deal in ATL's favor

Are you seriously citing 4 days of OPS?

They have 26 AB's since the trade....combined.

Like others said, that's a sample size so tiny it's basically useless. But it is kinda funny Escobar had no HRs in Atlanta, and he already has two with Toronto.

the blue jays injected escobar with whatever they've been injecting into everyone else in the lineup

Did you read the "obviously way too early" disclaimer? Calm down, and don't take the numbers for anything more than I suggested. When Teixeira had a few solid back-to-back games a few weeks ago, people started wondering if he was turning things around. Well, I think we might be seeing the beginning of a correction for Yunel's season-long slump. We'll see if it continues.
