On the eve of exchanging salary figures for arbitration, right-hander Felix Hernandez has agreed to a multiyear contract with the team, pending a physical, a source with direct knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com's Keith Law on Monday.

The amount or length of the deal were not immediately available.

EDIT: From MLBTR:

TUESDAY, 7:38pm: Venezuelan reporter Francisco Blavia of Lider en Deportes tweets that the deal is worth $78MM over five years with no option for a sixth year. Meanwhile, Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider says he was told the deal "may very well be six years guaranteed and less than $100 million, with some incentives that could push it over the $100-million mark."

EDIT: Olney and Heyman are saying 5/80.

More excellent work from Jack Zduriencik. This offseason is nothing short of an A+ grade for him.

Seattle's trying damned hard to put it together, and so far the moves seem to look good. Mariners overtaking the Angels for the next couple of seasons? It's looking likely.

That will take care of what could have been the mother of all bidding wars between the Yanks and Sox.

Well, there is still a certain catcher ...

There's a buzz out here I haven't really felt in close to a decade over the M's. Walk-up tickets may not be so much of a lock this year

looks like Cliff Lee will be taking Andy's spot next year ;)

Good for Seattle locking up their homegrown star. More teams should do stuff like this (I'm looking at you Minnesota). It would be all around better for baseball.

Good for the M's and good for Feliz. it's crazy that it's a 6 year deal and he'll still be 29 when he hits the market.

Dont worry about Mauer, I expect his signing annouced right around Twinsfest.

What a steal for the M's. They got 24 year old Felix Hernandez for less than the Sox paid for 32 year old Lackey and Yanks paid for 33 year old Burnett.

Plus this is great for Felix because after this deal ends he'll still be in a position to be vastly overpaid by the Yankees or Sox for his decline years. Sigh.

Yeah but you can't look at it like that. Felix wasn't an FA (meaning no other teams bidding for him) and he had two arbitration years bought out.

SI_JonHeyman felix gets $78 million over the 5 years, sources confirm. @franciscoblavia first mentioned that figure. good job by him.

Good deal for the M's.

I'm not yet convinced he's top 3. He's going to have repeat last year for that, but looks to be a good deal and something they absolutely had to do.

This is the 5th or so time I've said this, but in comparison to Bavasi, Zduriencik is just about a god.

Good deal for both sides.

Felix locks up big money. He could have waited two more years for bigger money, but if he blows out his arm, he misses out altogether.

The M's avoid anymore talk or distractions about his contract for 5 years and didn't have to go $20M+/yr for him, which is what he would have gotten in 2 years.

I'm A Wenner!

And Hernandez still hits the market at 28 for a huge payday.

The fans really need to love Zduriencik. I think he was the main reason of King Felix signing that contract. The winning season he built and this off-season moves make King Felix think that the team can win it all in the future.

Oops, how I miss that.

The only move I don't like is the Morrow trade. But there is no reason to give him anything less than A+ in this off-season. The scary thing (or the good thing to M's fans) is that they still have at least $10M to spend, if he wants.

One reason I really like Zduriencik's moves this offseason is that he failed miserably overall in drafting pitching with Milwaukee. He's a guy whose opinion I'd take on any prospect bat, but rarely on an arm. So what'd he do? Trade for an elite SP in Lee & extend the M's homegrown ace arm. Well played, Jack.

I read speculation somewhere that Jack Z prefers to develop bats (due to higher durability rate) and acquire pitching via trade/FA

So far, he's done alright (OK a little more than alright ;) ) with the trade/FA arms...
Aardsma, Lee and Felix for starters (remains to be seen if Snell and/or French pan out) and seems he wanted nothing to do with the previous regime's picks (Morrow, Aumont, Putz)

His "new bats" on the farm...
Ackley and Franklin are ranked among the top ten of the M's prospects - be interesting to see how they, along with some leftovers from the Bavasi era (Truinfel, Tuiasosopo, Saunders, Moore) develop.
