I thought Leyland really liked that Gomez guy.

Apparently they'll bring him back with a minor league contract.

Tigers said he will be the only one non-tendered this winter.

Umm. Wait. They couldn't trade these guys?

they had a deal in place for giles with the orioles, but angelos typically nixed it at the last minute.

it's hard to believe that no one else was interested in giles, but schuerholz is a very good GM, so you have to believe that he did this for a reason.

I know the Orioles were intersted in Giles. And I have to imagine that San Diego is as well. They traded Barfield.

Giles was supposed to fetch Linebrink - now, nothing.

Wow...

NYDCYankee

The Mets are probably jumping for joy right now. They should gobble him up right now.

The Braves could have at least traded him to the Mets and gotten an Oliver Perez type.

No word on whether the Yanks will offer a contract to Aaron Guiel. He is at least as good an option as Phillips for a 1st base platoon.

12-12-06, 05:30 PM
Well good luck to ya Guiel. I have a question though. Since Giles wasn't tendered a contract and now is a FA, is he classified as a Type 'whatever' FA? I mean to the Braves at least get a sandwhich pick for him if he signs elsewhere?

I agree. I don't think it would be worth it to sign Giles if I am the Sox. With all the money they've spent I think they're looking at second base at a position that can save them money. This is one of the reasons Loretta is not coming back (which I am very happy about from a Yankee fan persepctive). It is much more cost efficient to insert the cheap and young Pedrioa in at second.

I'd look into:

Piniero, this guy has good stuff and has never put it together. I'd offer him a cheapie deal and see what happens

Reitsma, I am suprised here, I thought he was decent, a solid pen arm, might be worth a look.

Giles, I mean the guy was an all star not long agao, we don't need a second baseman, but can he play first? I think he did a bit for Atlanta as I recall. He could also be a trade option. Although the Braves could not deal him, so not sure of his value..
He just seems like too good a player to be on this list..

Duckworth, Wasn't this guy once a top rated prospect with Philly?

Hall, need backup catcher
